Encountering poisonous snakes was (and continues to be) a feature of life in Emerald. However, the potential seriousness of a snake bite in the early 20th century was exacerbated by distance from hospitals and absence of an antivenoms. Notwithstanding, this snake bite kite would be now regarded as more harmful than curative.

Physical description

A snake bite kit housed in a light wooden cylindrical tube capped at either end. It comprises a lancet to cut open the snake bite and Condy's crystals to counteract the venom. Owned by Jim Madigan of Emerald in mid-20th century. Made by Sanax Cpy. Melbourne. Snake bite kite has instructions for use.

Instructions for Use: / The Snake Bite must be immediately opened with the lancet and the crystals rubbed into the wound at once. A little water or saliva added to the crystals renders them more efficacious. /
