Historical information

Major Thomas Mitchell was a famous land surveyor and explorer who surveyed different parts of Eastern Australia with such high quality that he was awarded a knighthood for his work, as well as being named after a several Australian animals, streets, town, highway and an electorate.

Significance

This photograph has historic significance as it depicts part of the the historic exploration in 1836 of Sir Thomas Major Mitchell, one of Australia's most famous land surveyors responsible for creating and developing many parts of Eastern Australia that we know today.

Physical description

Black and white square photograph printed on matte photographic paper. The black and white photograph depicts the Bullock Team consisting of three men, four cattle and two wagons, with one of the wagons featuring signs paving the way for wool and the 1836 historic exploration of Major Thomas Mitchell.
