Significance

This photograph is historically significant because Emily Jane Brightwell was married to Carl Axel Nobelius, a nursery proprietor. Emily (b. 1857) was a first-generation migrant born in Creswick, Victoria. Her parents were gold rush expatriates of Ballarat, Victoria. Emily became a highly esteemed and prominent resident of Emerald. She took a keen interest in initiatives that supported the advancement of the district.

Carl Axel Nobelius was one of the most renowned nursery proprietors in Australia and founded Gembrook Nurseries.
