This photo appears to commemorate the opening of the new Isabel Caithness Maternity Wing at Williamstown Hospital which was opened in January 1955. The original 1955 maternity wing now functions as the hospital's administration area.

Stanley George Garnsworthy was the Chairman of the Maternity Building Appeal Committee established to raise funding for the new maternity wing at Williamstown hospital.

The mother and newborn may be the first baby delivered at the new Wing.

Mrs. Isabel Y. Caithness served as the Honorary Secretary of the Williamstown Hospital Annual Appeal Committee during the mid-20th century, organising major local charity events such as the annual Hospital Ball. In recognition of her extensive service and fundraising efforts, the hospital's new maternity section was named the Isabel Caithness Maternity Wing. It was officially opened on February 26, 1955.
