Historical information
An example of vintage Japanese export ceramic production using European-inspired picturesque imagery. The imagery reflects the international market for romantic European pastoral scenes, which Japanese ceramic manufacturers reproduced extensively for export, and is part of a set of six.
Physical description
Round Japanese ceramic bowl with a plain white rim and a central picturesque landscape. The scene depicts a rural countryside with a broad-leaved tree in the foreground, a stream or lake, a small house or farm building, fields, a winding road and flowering vegetation.
Two figures are seated beneath the tree beside the water, while a swan is visible in the foreground. The principal landscape is printed in black/grey, with selected areas highlighted in green, yellow, blue and red.
The overall design is a romanticised European-style pastoral landscape, rather than a specifically Japanese scene.
