Pith Helmet

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

Khaki pith helmet with khaki puggaree which has 5 pleats. One the pugaree is an oblong colour patch blue white red colours. The Pith Helmet has a cloth khaki band around the brim and 4 ventilation holes on each side of the helmet. This helmet has chin straps that also have ear protection when done up. On the back band of the helmet is a leather loop with a press stud.

The helmet was used by Sgt Cane A. E.

Leather Wallet, Bank Notes, Booklet on Patience, a Post Card

1 x Brown Leather Wallet, several bank notes, 1 x booklet 'Some Patience' - grey cover and white pages. A Sepia coloured post card of a tented camp in front of two of the Pyramids.

Historical information

The Wallet has been issued to a member of the Australian Military Forces by the Geelong & District Soldiers Welfare Committee. It would appear the bank notes have been amassed by the owner of the Wallet and the post card and booklet have belonged the owner of the Wallet.

Significance

All the items are originals from a member of the AIF.

Letters and Certificate

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

Three (3) grey lead pencil written letters from Ormond to Mona on oblong buff paper and an oblong paper Certificate awarded to Miss M Barker.

Historical information

There are three (3) letters from Ormond to Mona that were written whilst Ormond was 'Somewhere in France' in 1916 and one (1) Certificate to Miss M Barker from the Red Cross acknowledging her service during WW1 1914-1919.

Significance

These are original letters written in 1916 and an original Red Cross Certificate issued after WW1.

Inscriptions & Markings

Three (3) Letters four (4) pages from Ormond to Mona written from 'Somewhere in France' on 28 September 1916, 8 October 1916 and 18 November 1916. One (1) Certificate awarded to Miss M Barker. The certificate has been awarded by the Red Cross to Miss Barker for Four years service to the Society during the Great War 1914-1919.

The Capture of Jenin occurred on 20 September 1918 during the last months of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of the First World War. This photograph portrays a scene the day after the Battle 21 September 1918. Australian Commanders and Units were involved.

Hexamine Stove

Painted black, metal, oblong Hexamine Stove with four fuel Tablets.

Historical information

This type Hexamine Stove was used by members of the AIF during postings to Vietnam.

Significance

This Stove is an original issue to a member of the AIF who served in Vietnam.

Inscriptions & Markings

There are no markings on the Stove. The Fuel Packet is marked on the front of the Box - Fuel, Compressed Hexamine Contents: 4 Tablets, Explosives Factory, Maribyrnong. On the back of the Box - Directions for Use, numbered one to four.

Historical information

A fleet of Transport Ships was leased by the Commonwealth Government for the specific purpose of transporting various AIF formations to the respective overseas destinations. When not committed to military transport the ships were employed on other duties. The fleet was made up of British Ships and captured German Ships. The HMAT Medic weighed 12,032 tons and was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd Liverpool, she was leased by the Commonwealth Government until 26 October 1917.

Significance

This photograph is of HMAT Medic leaving Australian Shores 20-05-16. The Medic was also used as a troopship for Australia during the Boer War.

Historical information

3/772902 James K Oliver was a National Serviceman, April Intake 1955, he completed his training with 20th National Service Training Battalion, this is his story.

Significance

This book is an original that was written by 3/772902 James K Oliver covering his experiences as a National Serviceman in the April Intake 1955, with 20th National Service Training Ballation at Puckapunyal.

Flag

Australian White Ensign, predominately white, with Union Jack in left hand corner, with six blue stars positioned as in the Australian Flag

Historical information

The Australian White Ensign was first used on 1 March 1967 whe the ANL cargo ship Boonaroo was commissioned into the RAN for war service.

Significance

Prior to this RAN the Australian colonial navies had flown uniquely Australian ensigns. This was a Blue ensign defaced by the badge of the individual colony.

2 x black and white photographs of the Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW. A buff coloured cover for the photographs with a detailed description of the Memorial and who was responsible for the erection and placement of the memorial.

Historical information

Pte W Shirley served with 13 Battalion during WW1. Whilst an inpatient at Lady Davidson Home ex Pte Shirley commuted to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase to cut the Sphinx out of rock as a Memorial to his comrades. The time taken for the project was approximately 1 year 6 months.

Significance

This is a project of 5756 Pte W Shirley 13 Battalion AIF. The Memorial is dedicated 'To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF'

On the front of the 'Sphinx' 1st plaque - To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF, by the Late W. Shirley, no 5756, 13th Battalion. Died 27 August, 1929. 2nd plaque 'Lest We Forget'. 3rd plaque - 1914-1918.

Uniform Trousers - Tropical

Khaki colour trousers, cotton material, metal belt buckels x 2. One pair of the trousers has large map pockets.

Historical information

Tropical Dress Trousers for use by members of the AIF posted to 'Desert' Conditions.

Significance

These uniforms were issued during WW2 to members of the AIF.

Pair 1 - V54 1945 Made in Australia, Size 35, hand written in ink on right hand inside pocket 2832. Pair 2 - Q7 1943 Made in Australia, Size 30, there is a tag for Regimental No and Name.

Decoration - 3163 W J Smith

Victory Medal. Round bronze Medal , with ribbon.

Historical information

3163 Pte W J Smith enlisted in to the AIF on 29 September 1915 and embarked from Fremantle on the Argylishire. On arrival Pte Smith was take on strength to Pioneer Training Battalion and was then transferred to 5 Pioneer Battalion. Pt Smith returned to Australia on the Berrima and arrived on 02 January 1919, was discharged on 22 March 1919.

Significance

This Victory Medal is the original that was issued to 3163 Pte W J Smith.

Plaque - - The RSL 70th Anniversary Plaque

An oblong silver and black frame with an EPNS A1 silvereplate Australia Soldier. Within the frame there is the RSL Logo, the silverplate plaque and inscription box.

Historical information

This plaque was commissioned by Sir William Keys, National President, RSL, in 1986, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Returned and Services League. The the plaque was exclusive to RSL Members and next of kin.

Flag - US Vietnam Veterans

This flag is oblong, cloth material, colour olive/brown, it has a map of Vietnam in a round red circle with the words Vietnam Veteran above the circle in a black half circle are the words Our Cause Was Just. There are 12 Unit Patches in a circular pattern around the other circles.

Historical information

This Flag was designed to honour US Vietnam Veterans.

Significance

The Flag is has the Unit Patches of the US Units that served during the Vietnam era - August 1964 to May 1975.

History of Colin Quin

A detailed A4 paper discription of Colin Quin a National Serviceman in 1958 and commenced training in the 20 National Service Battalion. Colin Quinn and joined the Regular Army after completion of National Service.

Historical information

Colin Quin was a National Serviceman in the 1958 intake upon completion of National Service Colin Quin joined the Regular Army. Colin served with the 21st Construction Engineers the unit went to Wewak, Borneo. After Military Service Colin worked as a refrigeration mechanic and has the interesting hobby of making model aeorplanes from beer cans. Colin Quin is also a distant relative to Ned Kelly.

Significance

This is the original story of Colin Quin.

Gunto (military sword)

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

2 x Gunto Japanese Swords, both swords have a curved steel blade, one sword has a metal scabbard, one has a leather scabbard. One sword has a brown tassle indicating the rank of sergeant and three cherry blossoms on the grip, one has three cherry blossoms on the grip however the tassle is missing.

Historical information

The shin gunto was used by non-commissioned officers the design resembled the officer's shin gunto but were a cheaper quality.

Significance

These swords are originals of their time and would have belonged to non-commissioned officers.

RSL Interstate Football Program

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

1 x Souvenir Program RSL Interstate Football - Victoria vs South Australia, 1 x Order of Weekend Events, 1 x Admit Bearer Entry Tag.

Historical information

On 31 July 1948 a football match was played at the South Melbourne Cricket Ground between sides from Victoria and South Australia. The event was organized by the RSL Victorian Branch. The RSL Victorian Branch Football Association was originally formed in 1947 and was affiliated with the Victorian Football Union. The purpose of the Football Association was to provide organized football for Returned Servicemen. The were 14 teams and 650 players registered in the inaugural competition which was won by Williamstown Sub-Branch.

Significance

The Program, Order of Weekend Events and Admit Ticket are originals from the weekend 30 July 1948 to 01 August 1948, the game was played on 31 July 1948.

Documents - 826 Harry J Britter

Historical information

The family of 826 Harry James Britter have collected paper clippings, cablegrams, greeting cards relating to the Service of H J Britter, who enlisted into the AIF on 12 July 1915, he was posted to 31 Battalion. In WW1 this Battalion initially went to Egypt, the Battalion consisted of two companies from Queensland and two companies from Victoria.

Significance

The documents are originals and have been preserved by the family of 8216 Harry J Britter, a Geelong man who enlisted into the AIF on 12 July 1915

A round shape with wings through the middle of the badge, Crown on the top of the badge, the centre is the Air Force red, white and blue. This badge has a pale blue across the bottom, Air Force Association.

Historical information

The Air Force Association was formed in Melbourne in 1919, by Mr H V Leckie. The Association was formed after Mr Leckie put an advertisement in the newspaper asking for interested former members of the Air Force Corps to meet him.

Significance

This badge with the number 97277 on the reverse has belonged to a member of the Air Force Association

General Service Badge 2nd Type

An oval shape badge, gold colour, a crown, tri service in the middle.

Historical information

This medal is the General Service Badge 2nd Type. This medal was introduced in 1946 and issued to personnel who volunteered for overseas service but were retained in Australia for home service, members of the Naval Reserve who were not mobilised, those mobilised who do not qualify for the RAS.

Significance

These Badges were introduced and issued to those volunteers who did not qualify for RAS. This badge is an original.

Historical information

Significance
