These three photographs are of Servicemen from Geelong, they left Australia on 4 August 1917 and joined 5th, 6th and 7th Battalions. 7579 Raymond Teese was KIA on 19 April 1918.

These are original postcard photographs of Servicemen who were from Geelong, they left Australia on 4 August 1917, one of these men did not return, 7579 Raymond Teese was KIA 19 April 1918.

'Letters' 431003 Alfred C Heintz

A series of 'Letters' to 431033 LAC Alfred C Heintz. The letters have been photocopied and are contained in a dark blue leather folder that was a gift from the RSL.

Historical information

431033 LAC Alfred C Heintz with the Air Force during WW2 and these letters have been sent to him from his Family.

Significance

This Folder is the original that belonged to 431033 LAC Alfted C Heintz, there are photocopies of the letters inside the Folder.

Inscriptions & Markings

The front of the folder has the RSL Badge embossed on the front (on two figures on the badge) and inscribed 'With Best Wishes from the Returned Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia'.

Ribbon Bars - US Military Decorations

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

Four Coloured Cloth Ribbons mounted for wearing on Uniform. The ribbons correspond to the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Overseas Service Ribbon. The bronze clasp on the Good Conduct Medal indicates that the decoration has been awarded more than once.

Tobacco Tin

Round, brown colour, tin materials with raised lettering on the tin lid and the base of the container.

Historical information

This tobacco tin was used by someone who indulged in cigarette smoking and was presumed to be used by in the Defence Force during the Second World War.

History of Colin Quin

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

A detailed A4 paper discription of Colin Quin a National Serviceman in 1958 and commenced training in the 20 National Service Battalion. Colin Quinn and joined the Regular Army after completion of National Service.

Historical information

Colin Quin was a National Serviceman in the 1958 intake upon completion of National Service Colin Quin joined the Regular Army. Colin served with the 21st Construction Engineers the unit went to Wewak, Borneo. After Military Service Colin worked as a refrigeration mechanic and has the interesting hobby of making model aeorplanes from beer cans. Colin Quin is also a distant relative to Ned Kelly.

Significance

This is the original story of Colin Quin.

The Official RSL Tankard Collection, four tankards, round, white, ceramic with three pictures per tankard.

Historical information

There are four tankards in this collection. Each tankard has three pictures pertaining to a specific conflict - WW1, WW2, Korean War and Vietnam War.

Significance

The pictures show particular battles per conflict.

Flag of Australia

Historical information

The Australian flag was first unfurled on 3 September 1901, it comprises the Union Jack, below the Union Jack is a large six pointed star and the Federation Star representing the six States within the Commonwealth of Australia, in 1908 the star became a seven pointed star, to represent the Territories, in the fly of the flag, five stars symbolise the Southern Cross.

Significance

This flag became the Australian Flag became upon Federation.

Instrument of Surrender

A paper copy of the Instrument of Surrender in a gold painted wooden frame.

Historical information

The Instrument of Surrender was signed on 2 September 1945 and is the Surrender of the Empire of Japan. Emperor Hirohito announced the Surrender of Japan in August 1945, the surrender document was signed by board USS Missouri on 2 September 1945.

Significance

The Instrument of Surrender ended WW2 in 1945.

Print - 'Mosquito'

A print of the aircraft Mosquito, the aircraft is portrayed in flight on a sky background. The print is in a silver metal frame with a white backing.

Historical information

The print is of a 'mosquito' aircraft and has been signed by Leonard Cheshire, VC. Group Captain RAF. Group Captain Cheshire became a most decorated pilot during WW2 and was created Baron of Cheshire in 1991 in recognition of his charitable work.

Significance

This print 'Mosquito' has been personally signed by Leonard Cheshire.

Each print is individually signed by Leonard Cheshire, VC. The original painting is by Robert Taylor. The print is published by The Military Gallery, Bath.

These items include a hat badge, uniform buttons, 2 x ribbons (colour light blue, dark blue and red) with rosettes. The two rosettes indicate 25 years service.

Historical information

The Corps of Commissionaires was founded in 1859 to provide work for ex service men. The Corps of Commissionaires is a Security Company and is currently trading as 'Corps Security'. The Company specialises in providing corporate security.

Significance

This hat badge, buttons and ribbons are the originals of someone who was employed by the Corps of Commissionaires.

Two Australian Military Medals - War Medal 1939-1945 and Australian Service Medal, One Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (miniature).

Historical information

VF388646 Gwenyth Carr Served with the Australian Womens Army Service during WW2. VF388646 G Carr served with RA Sigs and obtained the rank of Captain? After her Military Discharge Gwenyth Carr served with the Police after graduating from Police College in 1946 she retired in 1974 with the rank of Senior Sergeant.

Significance

The medals and badges are the originals belonging to VF388646 GE Carr.

The photographs include those of 6454 James F Fry, a unit photograph, photographs of the hospital St Leonards by the Sea, England, discharge Certififate, Recognition Certificate from Balliang RSL. Medals - British War Medal and Victory Medal with ribbons., silver colour, round, gold colour round.

Historical information

6454 James F Fry enlisted in the AIF on 27 October 1916 and served in France during WW1. 6454 James F Fry embarked Australia on the HMAT Hororata on 23 November 1916 and returned to Australia on HMAT Runic on 22 March 1918. James F Fry also served in the Volunteer Defence Corps during WW2 his regimental number was V361385.

Significance

The photographs and documents are copies of the originals belonging to 6454 James F Fry. The medals are the originals belonging to 6454 James F Fry.

On the back of the hospital photograph only, St Leonards by the Sea, England. The Meds are inscribed around the edge - 6454 J F Fry AIF 24 Battalion.

Gunto (military sword)

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

2 x Gunto Japanese Swords, both swords have a curved steel blade, one sword has a metal scabbard, one has a leather scabbard. One sword has a brown tassle indicating the rank of sergeant and three cherry blossoms on the grip, one has three cherry blossoms on the grip however the tassle is missing.

Historical information

The shin gunto was used by non-commissioned officers the design resembled the officer's shin gunto but were a cheaper quality.

Significance

These swords are originals of their time and would have belonged to non-commissioned officers.

The blade of the sword with the metal scabbard has the number - 101657.

Photograph - James E Newland VC

Historical information

James E Newland VC was born in Highton, Victoria and served in the AIF during the Boar War, WW1 and WW2. James E Newland was awarded the VC in April 1917 'for most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty, in the face of heavy odds, on three separate occasions.' James E Newland was presented his award by His Majesty King George V.

Significance

James E Newland VC was born in Highton, Victoria and served with the AIF for over 40 years and obtained the highest honour that can be bestowed for bravery. James enlisted in the Australia Army as a Private and on discharge held the rank of Lt Col.

Belt - Sam Browne

Leather Belt.

Historical information

This is an original belt, however the name on the back is illegible, except for WO1. The Sam Browne belt is named after Sam Browne who when injured devised the belt to hold a sword and the belt had two shoulder pieces when a pistol was added.

This is an original Sam Browne belt.

Medallion

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

Round medallion, bronze in colour, crown on top and ANZAC inscribed on the bottom of medallion. There is a lapel badge "A". The medallion is cast in bronze and the lapel badge will be a metal of bronze colour.

Historical information

This medallion was issued to surviving members of the Defence Force who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, or in direct support. NOK or other entitled persons can aapply to receive the medallion on behalf of the relatives.

Significance

The medallion is to be issued to ANZACs who were at Gallipoli between 15 April 1915 and the final date of evacuation in January 1916.

Obverse of medallion depicts Simpson and his Donkey, lower border is a laurel wreath above the word ANZAC. The reverse shows a map in relief of Australia and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross the lower half is bordered by the New Zealand fern leaves. Inscribed J.C. Martin.

Uniform - RAAF Service Dress

Service Dress Blue Jacket and Trousers with buckle belt, RAAF Buttons, badges of Rank on both sleeves and Ribbons of three Decorations above the left pocket.

Historical information

This uniform belonged to 036319 F/Lt A S Cutting who served in the RAAF During WW2.

Significance

This uniform was made in 1945 and was owned by F/Lt A S Cutting.

Inside the jacket a small tag - A F (the I in the shape of the 'broad arrow', used to indicate military use (Navy, Army, Air Force) 1945, M. TX, Size 22.

Shovel

Wooden Handle Trench Shovel with steel head.The head folds to reduce the length of the shovel. The shovel head and the handle are kaki there are two round holes on either side of the shovel head and a hole at the end of the handle.

Historical information

Used by members of the Military to dig trenches and fox holes.

Provides shelter to personnel when in the field.

Replica Ice Bucket

A round shape Replica Ice Bucket various colours predominately yellow looks like a drum of the corps.

Historical information

A Replica Ice Bucket of 1st Bn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's). There is a list of conflicts on the front of the Ice Bucket that this Regiment has been involved in. The Regiment has been amalgamated and renamed several times. As of July 2012 they are known as Balaklava Company, 5 SCOTS (A&SH), Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Significance

This Regiment was created in 1881 and served during WW1 and WW2, an active battalion served in Korea 1950-51 and Aden during 1967.

This flag is oblong, cloth material, colour olive/brown, it has a map of Vietnam in a round red circle with the words Vietnam Veteran above the circle in a black half circle are the words Our Cause Was Just. There are 12 Unit Patches in a circular pattern around the other circles.

Historical information

This Flag was designed to honour US Vietnam Veterans.

Significance

The Flag is has the Unit Patches of the US Units that served during the Vietnam era - August 1964 to May 1975.

An oblong black and white photograph of Winjeel Trainer Aircraft.

Historical information

This is a photograph of Winjeel Training Aircraft at Laverton in September 1955. The Aircraft are an Australian designed and manufactured, three seat training aircraft. The aircraft were used by the RAAF as an advanced trained from 1955 to 1975, it was later used by Forward Air Control for target marking until 1994.

Significance

This is an original photograph of the aircraft at Laverton in September 1955.

Historical information

1319 E E Cork enlisted in Geelong 26 July 1915 and served during WW1 with Light Horse Regiment, AIF. The archives record shows him as posted to 4th Light Horse, the 1914-1915 Star has 8th Light Horse.

Significance

Uniform Jacket- Service Dress Ceremonial

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

Khaki Wool cloth Jacket, four patch pockets on the front of the Jacket. The Jacket has two 'Australia' shoulder titles on the epaulets, one only small (king's Crown) rising sun badge on the collar, six small buttons, four small buttons with King's Crown, map of Australia and embossed Australian Military Forces. One small button at the collar. On the right and left sleeve are the colour patch of Artillery. On the right sleeve is the badge of rank of Bombardier and four blue service chevrons.
