Hat, Slouch

Post World War 2 Australian Army Hat pinned into the slouch position. The pinned brim has a Rising Sun Badge attached by two metal pins. Hat Band is cotton and rouched. It also has a leather chin strap.

Historical information

This book was compiled by 1557 Gnr F E Westbrook. Gnr Westbrook was posted to 4th Battery 2nd F A B, he enlisted into the AIF 16 Sep 1914.

Significance

This booklet is of War Verses and Other Poems by 1557 Gnr F E Westbrook. Gnr Westbrook Enlisted into the AIF in Bairnsdale in 1914, Victoria, he served in 4th Battery, 2nd F A B and went to Egypt, Gallipoli and France.

Binoculars

Black metal binoculars, the middle metal barrel of the binoculars are covered in leather. There is provision to adjust the optics and the the binoculars can be lengthened. The binoculars are in a brown leather case.

Photograph - HMAT Runic

Photograph HMAT Runic on a cardboard backing.

Historical information

A fleet of transport ships was leased by the Commonwealth Government for the purpose of transporting various AIF formations to their respective overseas destinations. When not committed to military transport the ships were used for other duties. HMAT A54e Runic was one of these ships.

Significance

The HMAT Runic weighed 12,480 tons and was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd. Liverpool. The HMAT Runic was leased by the Commonwealth Government until 27 November 1917. She carried AIF Personnel to overseas destinations during WW1.

Diamond shape bronze badge - on the front a crown, an anchor, rising sun, and wings. Underneath on a boomerang the words 'Returned from Active Service'.

Historical information

This badge was made in 1940 and has the number A12397, A indicated issued to an AIF member. These badges were issued to all Returned from Active Service Personnel between 1940 and 2012.

Significance

The badge is an original and has been issued to a member of the AIF on Return from Active Service.

RAAF Flying Log Books

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

Two x Flying Log Books, Form A18 (Revised April, 1937) (RAF Form 414). The books are almost square, blue cloth covers, white pages.

Historical information

416423 C C Gardner enlisted into the RAAF In Adelaide, SA. There is no information in the Flight Log Book relating to his training and Service, however there is a parcel of personal letters, paper clippings, telegrams etc that would indicate that 416423 C C Gardner was in England during WW2, one letter advises of his Award of Distinguished Flying Cross. 403619 A Kennedy enlisted into the RAAF in 1941 and trained in Narrandera. Later in the Flight Log Book there are entries of him being at MacLeod, Alberta. At this point in time there is no other information on 403619 A Kennedy.

Significance

These RAAF Flight Log Books are originals and belong to 4166423 C C Gardner DFC and 403619 A Kennedy, both served during WW2.

Cornflower - Bleuet de France

A Blue metal flower (cornflower) on a metal lapel pin.

Historical information

The bleuet de France is the symbol used in France to finance War Veterans, very similar the the Poppy. The bleuet de France is available for sale on 11 November and 08 May each year. Similar to the poppy this flower continued to grow in land devastated by shelling and military activity.

Statue and Photograph - Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels

Photograph - black and white copy of the original in a wooden frame. Statue - free standing bronze statue on a wooden block.

Historical information

The photograph was taken by George Silk on Christmas Day 1942 near Buna, Papua New Guinea. George Silk was a War Photographer for Australian Government, his appointment began in 1939. He was in New Guinea with the AIF when this photograph was taken.

Significance

The photograph shows the work and assistance of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels to Australian Servicemen who were Serving in Papua New Guinea during WW2.

Inscriptions & Markings

Photograph has a information on the bottom of the frame describing the picture and who is the photographer - George Silk. The men in the photograph are Pte G C Whittington 2/10th Battalion AIF and Papuan Raphael Oimbari. The photograph was taken on Christmas Day 1942 near Buna, Papua New Guinea.

Badge - R&SLA

Metal gold coloured badge, white background, blue circle with four figures in a coloured gold centre of the circle. A red ribbon like across the bottom .

Historical information

This badge is issued to personnel who have served during periods of peacetime and personnel who had not served overseas.

Significance

This is the last time the Badge has been changed (1990) - a fourth figure has been added to the figures in the centre of the badge, and the name changed to Returned and Services League Australia. The fourth figure, female, recognises our female service personnel.

Front - in the blue circle Returned & Services League, in the red ribbon on the bottom of the badge Australia. Covering the crown the year badge 03. Back - Badge Remains Property of League, V26132.

Medallion

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

The medallion is round the obverse depicts Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety. It is bordered on the lower half by a laurel wreath above the word ANZAC. The reverse shows a map in relief of Australia and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross. The lower half will be boardered by the New Zealand Fern Leaves. There is a crown at the top of the medallion. The medallion is cast in bronze.

Historical information

ANZAC Commemorative Medallion is issued to all members of the Australian Defence Force and New Zealand Defence Force who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The medallion is also known as the Gallipoli Medallion.

Significance

The personnel receiving the medallion served on the Gallipoli Peninsula from 25 April 1915 to the final date of evacuation in January 1916.

Inscriptions & Markings

This medallion has the name W.E. Sabeston inscribed on the back underneath the New Zealand Fern Leaves.

Magazine - ANZAC Memorial Day - ANZAC Memorial Day

An oblong magazine, colour photograph on the front page with a soldier at a grave site and the Australian Flag on the left side, 6 paper pages the cover of the magazine has a grease proof paper cover.

Historical information

The magazine has been produced for ANZAC Memorial Day 25 April 1918, the pages are full of photographs of Australain Troops preparing for departure overseas and preparing for their service overseas. There are two pages 'Heroes of the Southern Cross' authored by A M David, Secretary Victorian Branch, RSL.

Significance

This magazine is an original of those printed for ANZAC Memorial Day 25 April 1918. The magazine contains photographs of the period 1914-1918 and a dedication authored by the then Secretary of the RSL Victorian Branch, A M David.

Replica Ice Bucket

A round shape Replica Ice Bucket various colours predominately yellow looks like a drum of the corps.

Historical information

A Replica Ice Bucket of 1st Bn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's). There is a list of conflicts on the front of the Ice Bucket that this Regiment has been involved in. The Regiment has been amalgamated and renamed several times. As of July 2012 they are known as Balaklava Company, 5 SCOTS (A&SH), Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Significance

This Regiment was created in 1881 and served during WW1 and WW2, an active battalion served in Korea 1950-51 and Aden during 1967.

History of Colin Quin

A detailed A4 paper discription of Colin Quin a National Serviceman in 1958 and commenced training in the 20 National Service Battalion. Colin Quinn and joined the Regular Army after completion of National Service.

Historical information

Colin Quin was a National Serviceman in the 1958 intake upon completion of National Service Colin Quin joined the Regular Army. Colin served with the 21st Construction Engineers the unit went to Wewak, Borneo. After Military Service Colin worked as a refrigeration mechanic and has the interesting hobby of making model aeorplanes from beer cans. Colin Quin is also a distant relative to Ned Kelly.

Significance

This is the original story of Colin Quin.

A print of the aircraft Mosquito, the aircraft is portrayed in flight on a sky background. The print is in a silver metal frame with a white backing.

Historical information

The print is of a 'mosquito' aircraft and has been signed by Leonard Cheshire, VC. Group Captain RAF. Group Captain Cheshire became a most decorated pilot during WW2 and was created Baron of Cheshire in 1991 in recognition of his charitable work.

Significance

This print 'Mosquito' has been personally signed by Leonard Cheshire.

Historical information

This RAAF Flying Log Book belonged to Flt Lt Basil John Adam 400451. The first entry in the log book is 16 November 1940 at Elementary Training Course at Narrandera NSW.

Significance

This is a RAFF Flying Log Book belonging to Flt Lt B J Adams.

2 x black and white photographs of the Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW. A buff coloured cover for the photographs with a detailed description of the Memorial and who was responsible for the erection and placement of the memorial.

Historical information

Pte W Shirley served with 13 Battalion during WW1. Whilst an inpatient at Lady Davidson Home ex Pte Shirley commuted to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase to cut the Sphinx out of rock as a Memorial to his comrades. The time taken for the project was approximately 1 year 6 months.

Significance

This is a project of 5756 Pte W Shirley 13 Battalion AIF. The Memorial is dedicated 'To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF'

On the front of the 'Sphinx' 1st plaque - To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF, by the Late W. Shirley, no 5756, 13th Battalion. Died 27 August, 1929. 2nd plaque 'Lest We Forget'. 3rd plaque - 1914-1918.
