Historical information

6454 James F Fry enlisted in the AIF on 27 October 1916 and served in France during WW1. 6454 James F Fry embarked Australia on the HMAT Hororata on 23 November 1916 and returned to Australia on HMAT Runic on 22 March 1918. James F Fry also served in the Volunteer Defence Corps during WW2 his regimental number was V361385.

The photographs and documents are copies of the originals belonging to 6454 James F Fry. The medals are the originals belonging to 6454 James F Fry.

The Medallions and the Magazine are dedicated to National Service and National Servicemen who served during the period 1951-1972. The Memorial for National Service is located at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

Significance

The items are the original that were raised to acknowledge National Service and National Servicemen, 1951-1972.

The large medallion has a carving of the Memorial that is at the Australian War Memorial, around the medallion 'Dedicated to all Australian National Servicemen and in Memory of those who died. Thh two smaller medallions has the tri service logo in the centre and round the outside of the medallion is Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972. The Magazine 20 page history of National Service in Australia and the history of the National Service Memorial Dedicated 8 September 2010.

Historical information

HMAS Warrnambool (FCPB 204) was a Fremantle-class Patrol Boat. The Warrnambool was Launched in 1980 and Decommissionbed in 2005.

Significance

Designs for new class of patrol boat began in the late 1960s, the HMAS Warrnambool (FCPB204) was launched on 1980 and de commissioned in 2005. The Warrnambool was built by North Queensland Engineers and Agents and carried a company of 22 personnel.

This is a photograph of Pte Bruce Kingsbury VC who served with the Second AIF 1940-1942.

Significance

Pte Bruce Kingsbury served in the Middle East and New Guinea. Pte Kingsbury won his VC during the Battle of Isurava. He was the first serviceman to receive the VC in Australian territory.

A print of the Menin Gate at Midnight, oblong in shape, framed in a timber frame, a cardboard matte surrounds the print.

Historical information

Minin Gate at Midnight is a painting by Australian artist Will Longstaff. Longstaff completed the painting in 1927 and the original is now located at the Australian War Memorial. The painting depicts ghostly soldiers marching across a field in front of the Menin Gate War Memorial.

Significance

Longstaff painted the work after attending the unveiling of the Menin Gate Memorial, at Ypres, on 24 July 1927. The memorial commemorates the men of the British Empire, including Australia, who died during the 1st World War around the town of Ypres.

A framed poster dedication of a plaque that is in the Amiens Cathedral commemorating the Australians who defended Amiens between March and August 1918. The poster is framed in a wooden frame.

Historical information

On 07 November 1920 a plaque to commemorate Australians who defended Amiens between March and August 1918 was fixed to a pillar in the Amiens Cathedral. The Bishop of Armiens and Marshal Foch spoke at the unveiling of the plaque.

Significance

This a copy of the speeches of the Bishop and Marshal Foch and is a dedication to the men of the AIF who fought on the Somme between March and August 1918.

The dedications on the poster are by the Bishop of Amiens and Marshal Foch that were made on 07 November 1920 part of the speeches of these two men are printed on the poster.

These documents are originals that belonged to NX84949 O F Atkins, a member of the AIF during WW2. O F Atkins served in the Middle East from 23 August 1942 to 28 February 1943 and Borneo from 25 May 1945 to 5 December 1945.

Victory Medal. Round bronze Medal , with ribbon.

Historical information

3163 Pte W J Smith enlisted in to the AIF on 29 September 1915 and embarked from Fremantle on the Argylishire. On arrival Pte Smith was take on strength to Pioneer Training Battalion and was then transferred to 5 Pioneer Battalion. Pt Smith returned to Australia on the Berrima and arrived on 02 January 1919, was discharged on 22 March 1919.

Significance

This Victory Medal is the original that was issued to 3163 Pte W J Smith.

Historical information

This is a photograph of Winjeel Training Aircraft at Laverton in September 1955. The Aircraft are an Australian designed and manufactured, three seat training aircraft. The aircraft were used by the RAAF as an advanced trained from 1955 to 1975, it was later used by Forward Air Control for target marking until 1994.

Khaki Wool cloth Jacket, four patch pockets on the front of the Jacket. The Jacket has two 'Australia' shoulder titles on the epaulets, one only small (king's Crown) rising sun badge on the collar, six small buttons, four small buttons with King's Crown, map of Australia and embossed Australian Military Forces. One small button at the collar. On the right and left sleeve are the colour patch of Artillery. On the right sleeve is the badge of rank of Bombardier and four blue service chevrons.

Historical information

The bleuet de France is the symbol used in France to finance War Veterans, very similar the the Poppy. The bleuet de France is available for sale on 11 November and 08 May each year. Similar to the poppy this flower continued to grow in land devastated by shelling and military activity.
