Plaque - HMAS Sydney FFG 03

A stained wooden plaque with an etched picture of the Sydney and the ships motto 'Thorough and Ready' on a plate attached to the wooden plaque, there is also a presentation plate attached to the plaque.

Historical information

The HMAS Sydney FFG 03 was an Adelaide-class guided-missile frigate of the Royal Australia Navy. She was constructed in the United States of America and was launched in 1980. The Sydney was commissioned on 29 January 1983 and decommissioned on 07 November 2015.

Significance

The HMAS Sydney was commissioned to the Royal Australian Navy and has been involved in responses in Fiji and Bougainville, she was also deployed to the Persian Gulf on five occasions to support US Gulf War operations.

History - 2/6 Independent Company - The Purple Devils, Syd Trigellis-Smith

Book Purple Devils by Syd Trigellis, Smith, a Japanise Sword - steel blade encased in a leather scabbard and the military history of VX132826 W G H Burrell who served with 2/6 th Commando Squadron.

Historical information

The 2/6th Commando Squadron (Australia) was one of 12 independent companies or commando squadrons raised by the Australian Army during WW2. The 2/6th served in four major campaigns - Kokoda, Buna, Markham-Ramu and Borneo and was involved in the Battle of Kaiapit. Late in the WW2 hostilities 2/6th Commando Squadron was at Balikpapan and attached to 25th Brigade to provide support to the Brigade - reconnaissance patrols, fighting patrols, ambushes and humanitarian assistance to local inhabitants. The 2/6th Commando Squadron was disbanded in 1946. The Sword returned to Australia with a member of 2/6th Commando Squadron VX132826 W G H Burrell. The Book Purple Devils was written by Syd Trigellis Smith in his retirement, he had served during WW2 with 2/2 Field Regiment in New Guinea.

Significance

VX132826 W G H Burrell served with the AIF during WW2 in New Guinea and posted to 2/6th Commando Squadron and was on Borneo and at Balikpapan. George Burrell was able to being back the sword at the end of hostilities. The Book the Purple Devils is the 2/6th Commando Squadron history as interpreted by Syd Trigellis Smith.

Cap, Peaked

Khaki Officer's Peak Cap, cloth material, leather band round the peak attached to the cap by two small round shaped gold in colour Australian Army cap buttons.

Historical information

Australian Army Officers Cap worn in the mid 20th century.

Significance

These caps are not issued anymore and have been replaced by the slouch hat.

Inscriptions & Markings

Internal cap band is leather and joined at the centre back by a silk white ribbon. Internal leather band is secured at the rear by a white silk bowed ribbon. The inside water proof insert is inscribed Dept of Supply and CGCF (Commonwealth Government Clothing Factory) with the Commonwealth Coat of Arms in the centre of the inscriptions. Size 7 and one half.

2 x black and white photographs of the Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW. A buff coloured cover for the photographs with a detailed description of the Memorial and who was responsible for the erection and placement of the memorial.

Historical information

Pte W Shirley served with 13 Battalion during WW1. Whilst an inpatient at Lady Davidson Home ex Pte Shirley commuted to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase to cut the Sphinx out of rock as a Memorial to his comrades. The time taken for the project was approximately 1 year 6 months.

Significance

This is a project of 5756 Pte W Shirley 13 Battalion AIF. The Memorial is dedicated 'To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF'

An green oblong envelope with a circle cut into the envelope for the 50 cent piece. A 60cent stamp in the upper right corner. A photograph of AIF takes up three quarters of the envelope. The post mark is the tri service logo.

Historical information

The Pre Stamped Envelope and the 50 cent Piece were issued on 08 September 2010 to mark the dedication of the National Service Memorial in Canberra.

Significance

The item is an original that marked the Nation Service Memorial dedication, the first day of issue was 08 September 2010 in Canberra 2600.

A round shape with wings through the middle of the badge, Crown on the top of the badge, the centre is the Air Force red, white and blue. This badge has a pale blue across the bottom, Air Force Association.

Historical information

The Air Force Association was formed in Melbourne in 1919, by Mr H V Leckie. The Association was formed after Mr Leckie put an advertisement in the newspaper asking for interested former members of the Air Force Corps to meet him.

Significance

This badge with the number 97277 on the reverse has belonged to a member of the Air Force Association

An oblong buff coloured paper Memolrial Program. The flags of Australia, Great Britian and France are on the top of the program the Official Stamp of the City of Geelong is in the middle of the program.

Historical information

On 11 March 1918 a Memorial Service was held in Johnstone Park, Geelong to acknowledge those from the Geelong and District who had fallen in the service of their country. The Service appears to be organized by the City of Greater Geelong under the Auspices of the State Recruiting Committee Victoria.

Significance

The is an original program of the Memorial Service of 18 March 1918.

This card was sent to his sister Elsie by 9028 Joseph Haygarth, Farrier Sgt. 9028 Farrier Sgt Haygarth enlisted on 15 July 1915 setrved with DAC 2nd Division and returned to Australia in 1919.

Significance

This card was Christrmas Card was sent by 9028 Farrier Sgt J Haygarth to his sister Elsie and her children for Christmas 1917.

The jacket is an original jacket and belonged to 148487 David H Hyne who served during WW2 with the RAAF Marine Section. The RAAF Marine Boats can be traced back to the Australian Flying Corps, Central Flying School, Point Cook.

Photograph HMAT Runic on a cardboard backing.

Historical information

A fleet of transport ships was leased by the Commonwealth Government for the purpose of transporting various AIF formations to their respective overseas destinations. When not committed to military transport the ships were used for other duties. HMAT A54e Runic was one of these ships.

Significance

The HMAT Runic weighed 12,480 tons and was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd. Liverpool. The HMAT Runic was leased by the Commonwealth Government until 27 November 1917. She carried AIF Personnel to overseas destinations during WW1.

Historical information

The Australian Government provided the medallion to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the end of WW 2.

Historical information

The family of 826 Harry James Britter have collected paper clippings, cablegrams, greeting cards relating to the Service of H J Britter, who enlisted into the AIF on 12 July 1915, he was posted to 31 Battalion. In WW1 this Battalion initially went to Egypt, the Battalion consisted of two companies from Queensland and two companies from Victoria.

Significance

The documents are originals and have been preserved by the family of 8216 Harry J Britter, a Geelong man who enlisted into the AIF on 12 July 1915

Historical information

These photographs are of the Docking Brothers, Edward C, Arthur A and Victor Roy - all served overseas during WW1 and came home. Melville Roy (son of Victor Roy) - served during WW2 and was a POW in Changi. The three brothers were born on Prahan, Victoria but relocated to Western Australia.

Significance

These photographs are originals from the Docking Family.
