Flag - US Vietnam Veterans

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

This flag is oblong, cloth material, colour olive/brown, it has a map of Vietnam in a round red circle with the words Vietnam Veteran above the circle in a black half circle are the words Our Cause Was Just. There are 12 Unit Patches in a circular pattern around the other circles.

Historical information

This Flag was designed to honour US Vietnam Veterans.

Significance

The Flag is has the Unit Patches of the US Units that served during the Vietnam era - August 1964 to May 1975.

RAAF Flying Log Books

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

Two x Flying Log Books, Form A18 (Revised April, 1937) (RAF Form 414). The books are almost square, blue cloth covers, white pages.

Historical information

416423 C C Gardner enlisted into the RAAF In Adelaide, SA. There is no information in the Flight Log Book relating to his training and Service, however there is a parcel of personal letters, paper clippings, telegrams etc that would indicate that 416423 C C Gardner was in England during WW2, one letter advises of his Award of Distinguished Flying Cross. 403619 A Kennedy enlisted into the RAAF in 1941 and trained in Narrandera. Later in the Flight Log Book there are entries of him being at MacLeod, Alberta. At this point in time there is no other information on 403619 A Kennedy.

Significance

These RAAF Flight Log Books are originals and belong to 4166423 C C Gardner DFC and 403619 A Kennedy, both served during WW2.

Photograph of the ship on a cardboard backing.

Historical information

A fleet of Transport Ships was leased by the Commonwealth Government for the specific purpose of transporting various AIF formations to the respective overseas destinations. When not committed to military transport the ships were employed on other duties. The fleet was made up of British Ships and captured German Ships. The HMAT Medic weighed 12,032 tons and was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd Liverpool, she was leased by the Commonwealth Government until 26 October 1917.

Significance

This photograph is of HMAT Medic leaving Australian Shores 20-05-16. The Medic was also used as a troopship for Australia during the Boer War.

Uniform Jacket- Service Dress Ceremonial

Khaki Wool cloth Jacket, four patch pockets on the front of the Jacket. The Jacket has two 'Australia' shoulder titles on the epaulets, one only small (king's Crown) rising sun badge on the collar, six small buttons, four small buttons with King's Crown, map of Australia and embossed Australian Military Forces. One small button at the collar. On the right and left sleeve are the colour patch of Artillery. On the right sleeve is the badge of rank of Bombardier and four blue service chevrons.

This is a Linen Embroidered Supper Cloth with lace edging.

Historical information

VX48425 Richard H Bromilow served in the AMF during WW2 with 1st Independent Coy as a Transport Driver. His records show as of 01 July 1942 he is missing and presumed dead.

Significance

It is presumed that this Supper Cloth has been Embroidered in remembrance of VX 48425 Richard H Bromilow.

Embroidered in the centre of the cloth is the Rising Sun Badge above the Badge is 1st Independent Coy below the badge VX48425. In the four corners of the cloth are the colour patches of 1st Independent Coy

Historical information

The dice were hand made from available materials and used as a gambling game by servicemen during WW2.

Significance

These dice were made during WW2 from any available material and used as a gambling game by AIF servicemen. The dice are originals.

Letters and Certificate

Three (3) grey lead pencil written letters from Ormond to Mona on oblong buff paper and an oblong paper Certificate awarded to Miss M Barker.

Historical information

There are three (3) letters from Ormond to Mona that were written whilst Ormond was 'Somewhere in France' in 1916 and one (1) Certificate to Miss M Barker from the Red Cross acknowledging her service during WW1 1914-1919.

Significance

These are original letters written in 1916 and an original Red Cross Certificate issued after WW1.

Three (3) Letters four (4) pages from Ormond to Mona written from 'Somewhere in France' on 28 September 1916, 8 October 1916 and 18 November 1916. One (1) Certificate awarded to Miss M Barker. The certificate has been awarded by the Red Cross to Miss Barker for Four years service to the Society during the Great War 1914-1919.

The Royal British Legion is a Charity providing support to members of the British Armed Forces and their Families. Historical information

This is an original belt, however the name on the back is illegible, except for WO1. The Sam Browne belt is named after Sam Browne who when injured devised the belt to hold a sword and the belt had two shoulder pieces when a pistol was added.

This is a photograph of Pte Bruce Kingsbury VC who served with the Second AIF 1940-1942.

Significance

Pte Bruce Kingsbury served in the Middle East and New Guinea. Pte Kingsbury won his VC during the Battle of Isurava. He was the first serviceman to receive the VC in Australian territory.

Historical information

The HMAS Australia (D84) was launched in March 1927, commissioned in April 1928 and de commissioned in August 1954. The HMAS Australia (D84) was a County-class heavy cruiser of the Royal Australian Navy.

Significance

The HMAS Australia (D84) was Commissioned in 1928 and de Commissioned in 1954. These photographs show the ship during her service in the Leyte Gulf and Lingayen Gulf 1944 - 1945.

There are six (6) small photographs of the HMAS Australia during its period at sea at Leyte Gulf and Lingayen 1944-1945. There is a history of the dates/time the ship was attacked and the personnel losses per attack. The photograph has been signed by D E Shinkfield.

This card was sent to his sister Elsie by 9028 Joseph Haygarth, Farrier Sgt. 9028 Farrier Sgt Haygarth enlisted on 15 July 1915 setrved with DAC 2nd Division and returned to Australia in 1919.

Significance

This card was Christrmas Card was sent by 9028 Farrier Sgt J Haygarth to his sister Elsie and her children for Christmas 1917.

On the card front - two flags, the Union Jack and a Red Ensign. On the paper insert - Christmas 1917, a poem "Though I'm only one of millions...Peace and happiness proclaim. From Farrier Sgt J Haygarth. 2nd DAC AIF. To Elsie and the Children, wishing you all a Merry Xmas and a bright and Happy New Year.

Medallion

Geelong RSL Sub Branch, Belmont

The medallion is round the obverse depicts Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety. It is bordered on the lower half by a laurel wreath above the word ANZAC. The reverse shows a map in relief of Australia and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross. The lower half will be boardered by the New Zealand Fern Leaves. There is a crown at the top of the medallion. The medallion is cast in bronze.

Historical information

ANZAC Commemorative Medallion is issued to all members of the Australian Defence Force and New Zealand Defence Force who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The medallion is also known as the Gallipoli Medallion.

Significance

The personnel receiving the medallion served on the Gallipoli Peninsula from 25 April 1915 to the final date of evacuation in January 1916.

This medallion has the name W.E. Sabeston inscribed on the back underneath the New Zealand Fern Leaves.

Historical information

V92102 R W Pickford served during WW2 and remained in Australia. His date of birth is 1895 by my calculation R W Pickford would have been approximately 46 years of age on enlistment. However 13336 R W Pickford served during WW1 with Australian Army Medical Corps.

Significance

The items are original and belonged to Robert William Pickford.

Souviner Program - Dunlop Military Relay ... Despatch Ride 1912

A cardboard cover program with white thick pages inside.

Historical information

In 1912 there was a Military Relay Despatch Ride through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. The purpose of the ride was to deliver a despatch in the quickest possible time by road through the three states mentioned. The ride was carried out under the auspices of the Dunlop Rubber Company and involved cyclists, motor cyclists and motorists.

Significance

This is an original program of the event that was carried out in 1912. The program details the list of participants, a map of the route taken and statements of appreciation from the Military and the Promoters', there is also a message of greeting from the Military Commandant, South Australia to the Military Commandant, New South Wales.
