Melbourne Legacy is dedicated to caring for families of Australian Defence Force veterans who have lost their lives or health serving their country. At a time when all may seem lost, Legacy is there to help a family of individual through the tough times and restore their confidence in the future.

This collection will serve as an archive of items representing the history of the Legacy Club of Melbourne and the services that have been provided to the families of veterans by Melbourne Legacy from its inception to the present time.

Film - A Weekend at Somers

Green circular tin containing 10 inch reel in regular 8 mm film. B/W and sound. Tin has cover with details of film inside, including title, running time, and some credits. Inside the tin cover there is a place of showing list, starting at 24th of June 1965 at Legacy House Club Night.

Last shown at Legacy Somers Camp, 14th April 1967, 120 present. 23 min B&W film .Documents the routine and activities of a typical weekend at Somers, ending with a speech by Melbourne Legacy President I.W Anderson, who was President in 1964. Rare footage of activities run by Melbourne Legacy for boys post WWII which indicates how many children Legacy cared for both in Victoria and nationally and shows the dedication of Legatees in providing this care

Historical information

Stanley Savige born in Morwell Victoria on 26/6/1890. He served in the Australian Army between 1915 and 1946, including service in both World Wars. He is widely seen as the founder of Legacy. Legacy was founded in Melbourne in September 1923. Stanley Savige was a awarded a KBE, CB, DSO,MC,ED

Significance

This is a photographic portrait of the founder of the First Legacy Club in Australia, Stanley Savige.

Historical information

A program of an Annual Demonstration by Junior Legatees at the Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday 25th October 1938. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association.

Wooden framed black and white photograph of Major-General Gellibrand in uniform.

Historical information

Photo of Major-General Sir John Gellibrand taken in uniform. He established the Hobart Remembrance Club in 1923, which was an instant success. Gellibrand wrote to Stanley Savige who had been Gellibrand’s Staff Captain and suggested he should do something similar in Melbourne.

Significance

Of national significance as Gellibrand is considered to have influenced Stanley Savige to commence the process to form Melbourne Legacy in September 1923. The first Legacy Club formed in Australia.

Bill Roycroft, maybe Junior Legatee or Legatee? Olympian Equestrian, rode in three consecutive Olympics 1960/70 and won Gold. WonGold at Rome Olympics with broken arm. Tony Charlton, TV sports commentator channel nine, producer and commentater of film.

Significance

Maybe Bill Roycroft and Tony Charlton were Junior legatees or Legatees. Significant for Bill Roycroft winning three gold medals. Rome gold medal won with a broken arm.

Historical information

A newsletter produced on a regular basis by Melbourne Legacy for Junior Legatees, containing news, stories and messages including articles by current and retired members of the committee and executive as well as contributions from Legatee’s themselves. Articles include ‘Home Exercises for Girls’ Letters to the Editor and advice from the Legatee Doctor about sunburn and other health issues. It includes details of education classes, events, functions, holidays and news from the residences.

Significance

Records the work done by Melbourne Legacy to care for children of servicemen who were either dead or no longer able to care for families. Also records social conditions of the times.

Red photo album x 33 pages, with a collection of black and white, and sepia toned photographs. There is a blue string looped through two holes at the left side of the book that binds the pages together. A clipping from a newspaper article rests between pages eight and nine.

Historical information

Photos include Legacy residences that housed junior legatees. Also outings by some of the junior Legatees, for example to the zoo and a campsite or picnic. One of the junior legatees in a nurses uniform and dressed for her wedding. Names are not known. Further perusal is requried as some pencil marks are indistinct.

A compilation of photos of some junior legatees in the Legacy residences.

Crocodile imprint, black leather brief case with "LEGACY" painted in gold on the front of the flap. The flap is affixed shut via two metal clips. The clips can be locked with a key. (Key not located with case) The case has a three fold leather handle attached via two metal D rings. Internally the case is lined with a tan leather flap on each side. The internal front flap as a small sleeve attached. The lip of the top of the bag is scalloped and showing signs of wear.

This item is representative of a case that would have been used by staff/ board members/ legatees at one period in time.

Film - Shrine

Blue plastic circular tin with fitted reel inside. Lid has a sticker with information about the film. Film is 700 feet at 16mm. Piece of double-sided paper loose inside the tin with information on run time and last checked for inspection.

Historical information

Sound and colour. A film about the Shrine of Remembrance which was made in April 1981 (from the label). Documents the history of the Shrine by interspersing images of war with returned servicemen's marches. The film shows archival images of Australia in 1914 and accounts from WWI, which gave rise to the campaign to build the Shrine in the 1920s. Gen.Sir John Monash, after consulting with Legacy, lent his support and it was opened in 1934 by the Duke of Gloucester, becoming the focus of commemoration in Victoria. The forecourt with the Eternal Flame was added in 1954 to commemorate the fallen of WWII and was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II. Junior Legatees are shown paying their respects at one of their annual commemorations.

Significance

Legacy were instrumental in campaigning for the building of the Shrine.

Historical information

30 min colour and sound 16mm film, severely faded, beginning with an interview with a Vietnam widow and going on to explain the help Sydney Legacy gave to bereaved families including outings, health, etc. Lionel Long, who was a Legacy ward, is interviewed and sings one of the ballads he was famous for in the 1960s. A Widow's Club meeting is shown and a party of the Northern Suburbs Progressive Twenties who raised money for Legacy. They were smoking, drinking, and eating what looks like cheerios and slices of bread in a large room hung with streamers and balloons and dancing to pop music. Junior Legatee Karen Miller was interviewed about her experience travelling to Switzerland to represent Australia at the Swiss Bank Centenary, Switzerland, with a boy from NSW, going on to stay with a Legacy family in London for a week. The functions of Legatees are explained as a Legatee is shown with one of his families. Also interviewed is a practising solicitor who attributes his qualification to the help he got from Legacy. Girls are shown rehearsing for their debutante presentation and the film segues to the actual presentation with the Governor Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, and his wife. Legatees are shown cutting, trucking and delivering firewood to widows. Historical information

Historical information

14 mins, 16mm B/W, Sound. 1959 rehearsal for Junior Legatee Demonstration at Melbourne Olympic Swimming Stadium. The commentary notes how the fitness programmes avoided bad posture which would 'lead to a loss of confidence in a sensitive child' and helped them to avoid 'falling into bad company and delinquency.' It also noted the 'wise counsel' given to their mothers by Legatees and details the assistance available from Legacy to 9,000 fatherless families in Victoria alone. There are synchronised exercises, judo demonstrations, mass marching, girls creative dancing and a final tableau in readiness for two night's public performances.

Commentary on how important more than 1,000 Melbourne Legacy Legatees are in caring for fatherless children, and the opportunities given to these Junior Legatees. Historical information

This photo is of a group of Melbourne Legacy, Legatees proudly marching down St Kilda Road towards the Shrine of Remembrance in group formation on ANZAC Day in 1993 behind a banner marking the Diamond Jubilee of Melbourne Legacy Clubs formation 1923 - 1993. Plus an article in the Answer reporting on the day. Proof sheet of the day is at 00754 and other photos at 00755 and 00756.

Significance

A record of a Anzac Day march to commemorate the 70th Anniversary. The legatees chose to march together under the Legacy banner rather than with their comrades from their respective battalions.

Historical information

The Harelands property in Kew, was used as a residence for Junior Legatees (Legacy Beneficaries) up to the age of 14 years. It operated during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Significance

Melbourne Legacy established residences to aid children of deceased servicemen complete their education, take further education and find employment.

A recording of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. It is possible it was shown to Junior Legatees at a special screening as captured in the Programme for the Coronation Rally at 01163.

Historical information

Photo taken of eager Junior Legatee’s on their arrival at Lord Somers Camp. The date is unknown. Summer camps were conducted at Lord Somers Camp, Somers, Victoria, for many years for the children of deceased ex-servicemen.

Significance

A record of the camps run by Melbourne Legacy for the children. Legacy arranged many outings and events for the junior legatees.

Two 16mm black and white films. One film is wrapped in brown paper. Under the wrapping the film is enclosed in a plasic wrap.

Historical information

16mm colour no sound - the second B&W workprint not digitised. 13 min 24 sec. Begins with the flag raising ceremony at Somers Camp and then moves to Westernport Airfield where the boys are seen going for flights in Cessnas whilst others learn archery and play volleyball. Moves on to beach activities and dinghy sailing supervised by Legatees. Back at Somers there is a comic performance of Goldilocks in front of a large audience of younger Junior Legatees and the supervising Legatees, which ends with a bearded Goldilocks being taken away in a police car. A service in the bush chapel is then shown before we see the older boys throwing one of their number off a jetty. A volleyball game completes the film. There is no indication of date, but the clothes seem to be 60s/70s.

Historical information

43rd Annual Conference of Legacy Clubs ceremony at the Australian War Memorial 1971, addressed by Legatee Rev. Cyril Reeve in a stirring fashion. Commercially made, sound and faded colour, gone to red 8.09 mins. Production CTC-TV Canberra.

Significance

The solemn religious ceremony is typical of the 1970s and the film exemplifies the respectful attitudes of the times towards fallen comrades.

7 mins 7 sec. 16mm B&W no sound. Viscount Dunrossil was Governor General 1960-61. No sound. B/W. Demonstration for him and his wife by Legacy children at a primary school showing library,craft classes, exercise classes and woodworking. Both he and Lady Dunrossil interacted with the children, who appear overawed by their visitors and the fact that they were being filmed. There are also Legatees present. The girls wear a light coloured uniform with a Legacy logo embroidered onto the left hand side of the chest. The boys wear a shirt, tie and pullover. The lady who appears to be the headmistress is wearing a hat and gloves, whilst Lady Dunrossil wears hat, gloves and fur stole. 7 mins 17 secs.

Significance

Legacy had a high profile in the community at the time, which is indicated by the Governor General attending a school which was educating Legacy children.
