Uniting Church Archives - Synod of Victoria Malvern East, Victoria

The Archives has extensive material (Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational and Uniting Church) stored off site and a Reference Library which is on site. The Archives are financed by the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania and staffed by an Archivist and volunteers. The Archives are part of the Uniting Church's national network of archives and linked with UCA Historical Society (VIC) in Lectures and displays. Research is undertaken for a fee.

We have a fairly complete Methodist collection with significant holdings of Congregational and Presbyterian material. We also have a collection of Uniting Church Archives at State and local level.

John Cross B.A. (1862 - 1924) Born at Brown Hill in 1862. B.A. University of Melbourne. Worked for 43 years in the Education Department, first as a teacher, and later as an inspector of schools. Involved with the Brown Hill and Graham St. Methodist Churches. A generous philanthropist who gave large donations to the Graham St. Kindergarten, Queen's College and other Methodist causes.

The Rev. Ronald W Albiston 28/9/1919–16/08/2006 was educated at Melbourne Boys' High School, the Victorian Congregational College and the University of Melbourne. From a young age he held positions within the local church, was secretary of the East Kew Congregational Church at the age of 16, as well as superintendent of the Sunday School from the age of 15. Ron was supported during his life and ministry by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy. He was ordained at Northcote Congregational Church on 21 December 1942. His ministry was exercised in Northcote/Clifton Hill (1942–45), Yarrawonga and associated district (1945–50), Ballarat Dawson Street and "Zion" Sebastopol (1950–68), and Rockdale Congregational, Sydney, later Uniting (1968–83). Due to ill health, Ron retired on the 30th of April 1983. He was President of the Australian Council of Churches from 1971 to 1973, President of the Congregational Union of NSW from 1973 to 1975. As a member of the Joint Planning Committee he was involved in the development of the Uniting Church and inaugural Chairperson. Following union, he was a member and later Chairman of the Board of Social Responsibility. He was instrumental in founding the Mayflower Village for the Aged, the Rockdale Community Aid Service, and helped form the St George Community Conference.The Rev. Historical information

Rev Thomas Williams (1815 - 1891) went to Lakeba, Fiji as a missionary in 1839. In 1843 he went to Somosomo, and in 1848 to Bua. When his health failed, he was sent back to the colonies, and did circuit work in Adelaide 1854 - 1856. In 1857 he was transferred to Victoria, where he was stationed in Melbourne, Brighton, Creswick, Colac, Ballarat East, Castlemaine and Melbourne South. He became a Supernumerary in 1878. He was elected president of the 18th and last Australasian Conference held in Sydney in 1873.

March 1988 was Michael Ellemor's first time as Editor of C&N. September 24 1986 Ellemor was the acting Editor while Warren Clarnette was on long service leave. In 1980 Ellemor was the first candidate from Theological Hall to take a 12 months field education placement with C&N. Ellemor is now permanently retired (2017).

John Stuart Macleod Murray (03/05/1933 - 18/03/2011) was a scientist who worked in forestry soil conservation before taking out a Bachelor of Theology with honours at the University of Melbourne and a Doctorate in Divinity at the University of Chicago. He was Moderator of the Uniting Church for the state of Victoria.

Historical information

Mr Donald "Dosh" McLennan was a well-known Highland piper in the Colac district. He was honorary piper of the Geelong Commun na Feinne and the Colac and Camperdown Caledonian societies. He was born in Balmacara, Rosshire, and arrived in Victoria in 1852. He died at Colac on 26 September 1906, aged 57 years.
