Historical information

Excavation work to remove the grasslands and trees on the railway land on the west side of the Sunbury Station to make way for commercial development on that side of the line.

Historical information

The open are in the foreground was part of railway land on the west side of Sunbury Station along Horne Street. The initial preparations to develop the area into a commercial and entertainment precinct were just commencing.

Significance

The development that took place on this site was indicative of the growth that was taking place in Sunbury in the early 2000s

Historical information

The Aboriginal scarred tree was growing along the Redesdale Road just north of the Langley State School.

Significance

The scarred tree is evidence of Aboriginal technology as the bark from such trees was used for many items.

Historical information

Moulded green glass hand juice extractor with measuring base from the 1940s were the standard form for extracting and storing quantities of juice as opposed to the earlier more simple single lip base type of juicer.

Uniform

8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection, North Bandiana

Khaki serge tunic with Corporal's chevrons, Rising Sun collar badges, metal buttons and VDC shoulder flashes.

Historical information

Volunteer Defence Corps tunic and belt issued to V373891 Corporal Ian Stewart Wallace of the Albury Company Volunteer Defence Corps, 1942. Corporal Wallace was born at Kergunyah, Victoria, 24 November 1900. The VDC Company at Albury was raised in mid-1940. An initial meeting was organised by the local R.S.S. & A.I.L.A (RSL) on 28 May 1940. Names of intending members was forwarded to Sydney and on 11 July 1940, Captain Phillip Heywood, a grazier of ‘Hawksview’ and returned WWI officer, was appointed to command Area R.9 which took in Albury, Holbrook, Howlong, Corowa and Walbundrie districts. It is likely Ian Wallace joined in February 1942 when membership was expanded from former servicemen to over-age men and those in reserved occupations. Uniforms were only issued in 1942, prior to that VDC members paraded in civilian dress.

Significance

Rare example of uniform worn by Volunteer Defence Corps member during 'dark' days of Second World War when Australia feared invasion.

Gladys Lucy Holdsworth is the young girl in the photograph. She was born on 26th November 1883.

Colour photograph of Mrs Nesta Drew visiting her former teacher Miss Edna Jenkins.

Historical information

Mrs Nesta Drew is a longtime resident of Tawonga having operated a dairy farm with her family on the Kiewa Valley Highway in Tawonga. She grew up in the area and attending local schools and raised her own family there, until selling up the family home and moving into an aged care facility in recent years. Some of her family still reside in the local area.

Significance

Mrs Drew is a well known community figure in the Tawonga area with links to many social and family groups. She has a very strong historical connection to Tawonga and has been a reliable source of anecdotal local historical knowledge.

Historical information

3281.1 is a photograph of Terry Martin. 3281.2 is of Erasmo Giove. Both men worked in the timber industry.

Significance

These photographs are associated with the timber and sleeper-cutting industry in the Orbost Region. Timber sleepers were superceded by concrete sleepers in c. 1970s. Orbost has historically been based on the timber industry, but that industry has declined considerably over the last 20 years..The number of locals involved in the timber industry has declined and many of the mills have closed. This item reflects a time when that industry was a significant contributor to the economy of the district.

Historical information

In this photograph are : L -R Marg Smith' Margaret Vincent, Michael Pardew' Rob Young and George Thomas Apex Clubs were begun in March 1931 when three young architects, looking to make a contribution to their local community of Geelong Victoria, decided to create Apex. Apex is a volunteer community service organisation whose members work in local clubs across urban, regional and rural Australia to raise awareness about social justice issues, assist the needy in a practical way and contribute resources to worthwhile causes. (ref Apex website)

Significance

The Apex Club of Orbost was a volunteer service club which contributed to the Orbost community. A declining population has led to the demise of many social groups in the area.
