Certificate - Wodonga RSSILA Certificate of Appreciation, 1924
The Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia was formed in 1916 to support servicemen returning from World War 1. In 1940 its name was changed to Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia and again in 1966 to Returned Services League of Australia. Arthur Ernest Beard enlisted in the 10th Battalion in 1914 and was discharged as medically unfit in 1918. His service included three years and 115 days of overseas service. He was gassed during his war service, resulting in ongoing health issues. Beard received an incapacity pension. Despite his ill health, Arthur dedicated many years of service to the committee of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia Wodonga branch. At various times he served as President and secretary. He was on the committee when the branch was lobbying for the construction of a Soldiers' Memorial and also a Soldiers' Memorial Hall for Wodonga. Arthur also participated in groups and community activities, including the Wodonga Boys’ Club, Wodonga Public Library Committee and the Wodonga and District Progress Association. Arthur died on 29 Jun 1940 in Wodonga, Victoria, aged 46 years. This certificate is significant as it recognises service to the Wodonga Branch of the RSSILAA coloured certificate on heavy card presented by the Wodonga Branch of the Returned Sailor and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia. It features an archway imprinted with the name of the RSSIL with the League emblem surrounded by the flags of England, Australia and the Royal Australian Navy. It is adorned with an anchor and rifle and the words "Great War 1914 - 1919. An image of Anzac House, the headquarters of the R.S.S.I.L.A. in Melbourne is on the lower left hand side. Album - Photo album, A record of comradeship activities, 1970s-1980s
This album of Comradeship activities was compiled by Legatee Fred Holdsworth. It contains photographs, newspaper cuttings and ephemera relating to various “Comradeship” activities (social gatherings) held throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. Items included various events legatees participated in. First few pages had photos from a gathering at Cruden Farm on 15 May 1977. Cruden Farm was owned by Elisabeth Murdoch, the mother-in-law of Legatee Geoff Handbury. It appears there was a kite flying contest. Names are not listed. Three photos were from Queensland where Legatee Wal Escott had retired at Mundoona apartments, Noosa Heads, one photo shows him with Lorna Grimwade on 6/10/1979. There is a black and white photo of Max Armstrong, Rex Hall, Harry Burton, Warren Hardy riding horses in the Anzac Day march. The year is not known but an accompanying newspaper article mentions that they had been riding every year for 13 years on horses loaned by the police mounted branch. The newspaper clipping shows another photo of the four. A photo of seven legatees including David Carter were at the Numurkah Annual meeting in 1978. There are 8 photos of a gathering of Legatees and their wives at Stanhope in 1979. A photo of a Christmas party at Chaucers in 1979 was missing from the page, it has shown Choirmaster Reg Thomson and Choristers; Rob Allison, Bruce Hall, Les Patch, Bill Seager, David Syme and Ron Austin; with the M.C. being Fred Holdsworth. There was a trip to a trout farm in Alexandra Yea area in February 1978. At a comradeship evening there a photos showed the Comradeship committee of Harold Berg, John Cooper and Fred Holdsworth. Also photos from Anzac Night in 1980 and 1981. Plus other gathering at people's homes. A black and white photo of men in formal black tie, is from a night at the Windsor Hotel to farewell Sit Thomas White to become Australia's High Commissioner in London. Left to right are Sir Archie Michaelis, Sir John Latham, Sir Thomas White, Lt Col Donovan Joynt and Sir Stanley Savige. At the 1981 comradeship Christmas party, the held a 'this is your life' tribute to President Ken Green. The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Uniform - Slouch Hat, September 2005
On 22 December 1890, the military commanders of the then separate Australian Colonies prior to the Federation of Australia met to discuss the introduction of the khaki uniform throughout Australia. They agreed that all Australian Forces with the exception of the Artillery would wear the slouch hat. It was to be looped up on one side—Victoria and Tasmania on the right and the other colonies (later states) on the left. This was done so that rifles could be held at the slope without damaging the brim. After Federation, the slouch hat became standard Australian Army headgear in 1903Today it is worn by military personnel from a number of countries, although it is primarily associated with Australia, where it is considered to be a national symbol.Slouch Hat - this broad brim hat is made of fur felt with an 8 fold hat band (puggaree) around the outside of the crown and attached to the inside of the crown is a brown leather chin strap. The left side of brim is held up by a gold colour metal rising sun badge.slouch hat, australian army, puggaree, rising sun badge, headgear -

Album - Album page, Myoora, 405 Alma Road, Circa 1972
This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages.Myoora - Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) Number H0490 https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/275 (as at 6/10/2020) Myoora, 405 Alma Road, North Caulfield, was designed by Reed, Henderson & Smart and can be attributed to Anketell Henderson. It was built in 1886 and 1887 for Thomas Christian, who had founded the fabled gold mine, the Day Dawn at Charters Towers. He never occupied the house although his widow lived there for some time. The house was subdivided into three and later six flats. Myoora was one of many large mansions on broad acres with gardens in Caulfield. Perhaps the grandest was Labassa. The mansions date from the 1850s through to the late 1890s. The siting of Myoora on a ridge influenced its planning and composition. A central hall and corridor along the ridge is entered from the centre of the more formal north facade. The entrance is marked by an elaborately detailed tower. A stair turret provides a second accent. The western end of the building is completed by a massively detailed chimney as the service wing. The south facade enjoyed an outlook to port phillip from a two-storey cast iron verandah. Bay windows, chimneys, the tower and the turret and minor details are brought together in a sophisticated asymmetrical composition. This is reflected in the planning. The asymmetry of Myoora pivoting on the tower is the most notable feature of the building. The walls are built of cement rendered brick. The cement render has not been painted. The roof is slate. The balconies and verandah are cast iron. The footings and cellar are bluestone. The architectural firm Reed, Henderson & Smart was very prominent in Victoria in the nineteenth century. Anketell Henderson was an eminent and well respected member of the profession. He worked successfully in London and interstate as well as in Victoria. They were better known for commercial and public buildings. Myoora is an important private commission. The style of Myoora is a combination of details from the Continental and English Renaissance through the boom style and the Queen Anne style. There is also an early influence from the American Romanesque style especially in the stair turret. The latter style was important at the turn of the century and Myoora is a significant precursor. Other buildings of a similar scale survive in Caulfield and elsewhere. Labassa, the most fabulous, is quite different stylistically as are most of the other comparable mansions. Stonnington is perhaps closer but relies on different details from the Queen Anne style and lacks any American influence. For its historical associations through its owners and architects, for its style and composition and for its intactness, Myoora is significant at a State level. The craftmanship of Myoora is what could be expected of a building of the time and type. It is relatively intact and in fair condition. The main staircase has been removed, minor alterations to decorative features have occurred and additions have been made to the exterior.Page 8 of Photograph Album including four black and white photographs. Three photos are in a portrait orientation, one on the left hand side of the page with the other two in the bottom part of the page. One photograph in a landscape orientation is on the top right hand side of the page.
