The Visitor Centre was completed in 2003 and provides unimpeded access for the elderly and disabled to the Sanctuary, the Crypt and the Galleries of Remembrance as well as open space for exhibitions and events. The courtyard has an olive tree as a centrepiece. This is the olive tree of peace that was planted by Legacy in 1973 to mark their golden jubilee. It lists Ron Barassi's football career. Australian football legend, former ‘Legacy Boy’ and Ambassador, Ronald Dale Barassi, AM passed away at the age of 87 on 6 September. Ron was forever grateful for Legacy’s support to him and his mother Elza. Throughout his life, as a Legacy Ambassador, Ron generously used his well-respected status and networks to promote the important work of Legacy. Ron came into Legacy’s care as a child when his father Ronald James Barassi was killed in action at Tobruk in 1941. Ron’s father was the first VFL footballer killed in World War II. Only 5 years old at the time, Ron later rose to be a star footballer for the Melbourne Football club like his father. Legacy assisted with his education and health expenses and supported him in attending youth camps and other recreational activities. A State Memorial Service for Ron was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 10. Staff from Legacy assisted at the service by handing out programmes and encouraging attendees to sign condolence books which have since been presented to the Barassi family. Legacy was honoured by the Barassi family’s request, in lieu of flowers, that members of the public make a donation to Legacy to assist families of veterans in need, a cause very dear to Ron’s heart. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President' in 2004, before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. There was an article profiling Legatee Norman Harris and his achievements. An article about the Girls classes showed there number of classes was increasing - with new Tuesday night classes. Plus Miss Domec Carre was full time, after 23 years part-time as she was giving up her other work commitments. The ILC was recruiting new members. On page 7 there were updates from the Residences with numbers of children in each house mentioned as well as many of the past residents' names. Photos of the demonstrations were published as well. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War" Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. Ron ...From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. These photos are from the final of the Junior Plain English Speaking contest in the 1991 when Jamie Friebe was the winner. It was held at the MMBW theatrette on 27 June 1991. Ron Barassi attended and is shown speaking in a different room, possibly over a lunch. The photo in the Answer shows President John Sullivan with the 1991 winner Jamie Friebe. From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the State, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
