Pymble’, 2 Earle Street was built in 1907 with additions in 1915. It was the home of Alan and Edna Holt and family from 1958-1966. Alan Judge Holt was Secretary of the Lands Department of Victoria during his working life. He was a keen and meticulous local historian, whose work contributed significantly to this collection. Wally Ives was a fruiterer who had a shop in Union Road. He was an active participant in the Empire Day parades of the 1930s. The donor Jean Boucher was the daughter of Wally Ives. She was an early active member of the History Nook at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and member of the Surrey Hills Historical Society. The Oakland Motor Car Company was based in Pontiac, Michigan and was a division of General Motors. Although it was purchased by General Motors in 1909, the company continued to produce modestly priced automobiles until 1931 when the brand was dropped in favour of the division's Pontiac make. Ref: Alan Holt records - This property was part of Lot 25 in the Windsor Park Estate which was subdivided in 1883. The house of 12 squares was built in 1888 for John Abernethy, an engineer. He also built 62 Windsor Crescent as a coachhouse and cottage. 1888-1891: Owners = John & Sarah Abernethy. John Abernethy died while on a trip to Hong Kong in 1891. 1891-1909: Owner = Mrs Sarah Abernethy 1910-1917: Owner = H Jenkinson The properties at 62 and 64 Windsor Crescent were separated during WW1 (by H Jenkinson). "Originally known as the “Old Ready Homestead” the house was built in the 1890’s and was surrounded by a larger parcel of land that at least included the lot next door (No 90) and possibly extended as far as the Church property. This area was the scene of many garden parties and Wedding parties and contained a large water fountain. The property remained in the Ready family until sometime after the death of Mabel Ready in 1967." Raheen is a 120 year old Victorian house owned by Richard and Jeanne Pratt. Mrs Jeanne Pratt commissioned the book and this copy was presented to Sue Barnett on a visit by members of the Boroondara Historical Societies. Albert George Harbert was a local builder. His family home was built c1910. He married Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton in 1912. They had 2 daughters Norma Phoebe and Unice Ada (18 Jan 1918 - 6 Jan 2014). Norma was married to and divorced from Henry Jamieson. 7-9 Russell Street has had 2 house names: ‘Vavau’ and ‘Handsworth’. Early occupants were: 1887–1892: George Legge, builder. 1892-1902: Arthur Greenwood – storeman and missionary in Tonga, hence the house name ‘Vavau.’ 1902–1950s: Mr and Mrs George Jackson and family of 10 children. Alice Jackson was a specialist manufacturing jeweller and set up a jewellery business with her husband. He and the family continued it until late 1950s. 1978–1986: Sold in late 1950s; Ruth Theodoris and her husband Peter bought it; sold 1986. The house is extant in 2020 and was last sold in May 2009 for $1,315,000. Real estate agent photos from the time reveal it has had a large extension at the rear. Negative No 2121. Miss Jessie McCleverty operated a girls' high school at 12 Durham Road from 1903-1905/6. After this time she moved the school to 44 Windsor Crescent where it operated until 1933. Oral testimony from Mrs R McCoy: (NB/ It is unclear whether this refers to 12 Durham Road or 44 Windsor Crescent, but it is more likely to be the later as Mrs McCoy donated a photo taken in 1982 of 44 Windsor Crescent.) "She added school rooms and a veranda to the back. She was keen on Esperanto, the international language and wanted her pupils to know it. There was an archway over the gate, part of the design being a star, part of the Esperanto sign - and some suitable wording. This home was formerly known as ‘Guildford’ and was built in 1888. 'Guildford' / ‘Monserrat’ originally fronted Mont Albert Road. 1888-c1900 George Jobbins, architect 1900-04 William Holmes, designer of the electrification of Melbourne suburban railways 1906-22 Philip Parer family - Phillip Parer was one of 5 Parer sons & 3 daughters who came to Australia from Spain from the 1850s onwards. The family set up a catering business. 1922-23 George Dicker family, later of Mont Albert Road After the frontage was sold, the entrance to 'Monserrat' became Wandsworth Road. This photo was taken in c1910. ‘Warlingham’ has many typical Victorian features and has been restored and extended. The first owner was Thomas Kennedy Vernon Coburn, a solicitor. His wife was Sara Ethelwyn (Winnie) Cornell; they married on 26 March 1890. They had a large family and their eldest son (Arthur Wheeler Coburn) was born at 'Wannacul' Surrey Hills on 11 January 1891. The Coburns seem to have moved often and Thomas was declared insolvent in 1894, in part it would seem as a result of the land crash. The next owner was George Lumsden, grocer who is believed to have been there 1892-1896. He was married to Emma Louise Sim. During the years c1913-1919 Mr William Joseph Trenerry (manufacturer) and his wife Elsie (nee Capon) lived here. In the 1919 electoral roll the house name is given as 'Mosman', which may be a reference to Elsie Trenerry's origins; she came from Sydney. See also SHP1927 and SHP1384. Mr Walter Sessford Cornhill was born in c1886 in Orsett, Essex; died 2 September 1940 and buried in Box Hill Cemetery (B-069-0028). He was a carpenter. He married Rhoda Fraser (1882-1947). A son John Edmund was a plumber. Daughter Lillian married Charles Frederick Barrow. Walter Cornhill moved from 3 Essex Road to 316 Canterbury Road some tome after 1937. The house passed to Charles Frederick Barrow and wife Lillian and subsequently to Leonard Clement Gangell and his wife Pamela Gangell, nee Barrow.A black and white photograph of an early modern style house built on a corner block. Surrey Hills Mounted Police Station was located at 5 Suffolk Road (dem.) from 1889-1914. It was a police residence with two rooms as the police office and workshop. There were stables on the back fence. The property adjoined Wyclif Church in Norfolk Road. Gilbert McCallum rented from c.1914-1923 when he built a home in Westminster Street. It is his son Archie who can just be seen on the front steps. Archie remembers the 2 storied stables with a gantry for hauling feed sacks up with a block and tackle, then a polished wood slide to send the feed down. The McCallum children and local friends found this to be a marvellous slide. David McPhie, ex-police force, lived here with his family from 1923-c.1950.
