Photographs, The Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW, 1925-1926
Pte W Shirley served with 13 Battalion during WW1. Whilst an inpatient at Lady Davidson Home ex Pte Shirley commuted to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase to cut the Sphinx out of rock as a Memorial to his comrades. The time taken for the project was approximately 1 year 6 months.This is a project of 5756 Pte W Shirley 13 Battalion AIF. The Memorial is dedicated 'To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF'2 x black and white photographs of the Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW. A buff coloured cover for the photographs with a detailed description of the Memorial and who was responsible for the erection and placement of the memorial.On the front of the 'Sphinx' 1st plaque - To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF, by the Late W. Model eyes were used by students to practise skills of ophthalmoscopy and retinoscopy. This item shows more variety of fundus view and refractive state than most.This fine example is preserved in excellent condition, perhaps through lack of use. It is the most complex of the five model eyes in the collection.Cased metal model eye for teaching ophthalmoscopy and retinoscopy. 17 numbered interchangeable fundi illustrating various pathological conditions. Double cell lens holder in front can hold lenses for retinoscopy. Axis scale on front. 6 lenses provided to simulate various refractive states. Rotating disc changes between 3 pupil sizes. This file contains four items pertaining to activities at the Caulfield RSL: 1/A pamphlet published by the RSL (undated) providing cursory information about it; briefly describing its history and listing its amenities. Included are four colour photographs; two of the exterior of the building and two of patrons seated in its eateries. 2/The minutes of the 18/09/1979 meeting of the Angling Section of the Caulfield RSL. The main issue discussed is an impending vacation to King Island. A more minor issue discussed is the need to institute a recordkeeping system. 3/A typewritten letter, dated 26/08/1981, from the Caulfield RSL;s secretary, J. W. The issues vary in size (numbering 12, 6, 1, 8, and 8 pages, respectively) and consequently, in terms of breadth of content. Most, however, report on the Club’s recent activities, list the current administrative staff, eulogise recently deceased members, and contain advertisements for goods and services of interest to members. Book, Ballarat School of Mines Invoice Book, 1870 - 1875
Scrap book containing invoices relating to accounts to be paid by the Ballarat School of Mines between 1870 until 1875. The School of Mines at Ballarat was the first school of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. The works done to the former Ballarat Circuit Court House were overseen by Robert Davidson (architect and Surveyor) with the contractor being James Williams. Large book, green leather with red binding, numerous original invoices pasted onto the pages. The first pages of the scrapbook includes correspondence relating to the refurbishment of the former Ballarat Court House which was used as the Ballarat School of Mines from 1870. The Ballarat School of Mines had a 'Model Mine' that was used to teach students. Practical work was undertaken for a fee, supervised by laboratory superintendents. Copies of assays undertaken are compiled together in this book. Large green hard covered ledger with brown leather binding. An alphabetical listing of names of those who requested assays from the Ballarat School of Mines is found in the front. 713 of the 994 pages are used. Events held were Boy's (State School) Bicycle Race, Stepping the Distance (Gents), Stepping the Distance (Ladies), Bowling at the Stump, Kicking Football Through Hoop, Sheaf Toss, Bucket Ball, Sheffield, Children's Relay Race, Men's Potato Race, Tilting Rings, on Bikes, Walking Contest 1 mile, Car Race through pegs, Slow Bicycle Race 50 yards, Handicap Bicycle Race 2 miles, Tilting Rings in Cars, High Jump, Ladies' and Gent's Cigarette Race, Weight Guessing. Prizes were awarded for first and second placing of these events.In 1923, a Sports Carnival was held in the precincts of what was then a water reserve, situated south of the State School. The area was reserved for watering purposes on 1st May, 1894; and on July 15th, 1912, a small portion was excised. By 1923 its usefulness for water storage had disappeared, and being ideal for recreation purposes, it was decided, at the final meeting of the above sorts carnival, to apply for the area appointed, Mr W Harris (chairman), Messrs. G H Marshall, J Roberts, D Gill, M Connolly, R Vines, E Pocock, and H M Burke (secretary). The matter terminated in a Land Board, presided over by Mr McPherson, being held in Bendigo. The application was granted, but was not gazetted, until Messrs. W Harris and F J Roberts, with Messrs. A E Cook, MLA and Hon. H Keck, MLC interviewed the Minister for Lands. Soon afterwards, at a public meeting, the following members were elected to constitute the first Board of management, Messrs. W Harris (chairman), G H Marshall, A D Holden, F J Roberts (tres.), M D'Araugo, E Wright, and H M Burke (sec.). Since then the arena has been cleared and levelled by residents, and labor and material to the value of 150 pounds have been put into the reserve.
