Film, Legacy Junior Girls 1958, 1958
Black and white film showing Legacy girls at Legacy House in 1958 rehearsing for a demonstration. Shows Enez Domec Carre instructing them, and an unidentified woman (possibly Miss Williams) giving them elocution lessons with the aid of a blackboard and a reel to reel tape recorder. She does not remove her hat and coat. The film starts with the girls assembled in rows with bowed heads as if they are listening to a prayer. Two Legatees mark a roll book as the girls file past them in the gym. They are wearing gym slips with a Junior Legacy Club logo patched onto the chest. They rehearse both dancing and singing. Black and white with no sound. 7 mins 8 secs. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. TThe touching finale was "We'll not break faith", a massed item presented by Junior Legatees from all classes, with the band in the background under a large Legacy sign. The photo was featured in the December 1958 newsletter. Acts included combined boys' vaulting item, the Dances of Spain (Fiesta Flamenco), the Western Symphony by the senior girls. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association.A record of the displays at the Annual Demonstrations. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War" Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. There are some suggestion for careers and some general interest articles. The newsletter from December 1958. The cover featured Mr Geoffrey Armstrong making a donation to President Rob Allison. The president's page featured a photo of office staff on the phones during Legacy Week and promoted the Christmas party. There were articles from the boys classes, including a photo of Ron Barassi playing basketball with the South Melbourne class. There was an article profiling Legatee Norman Harris and his achievements. An article about the Girls classes showed there number of classes was increasing - with new Tuesday night classes. Plus Miss Domec Carre was full time, after 23 years part-time as she was giving up her other work commitments. The ILC was recruiting new members. On page 7 there were updates from the Residences with numbers of children in each house mentioned as well as many of the past residents' names. Photos of the demonstrations were published as well. A programme for a 'Gown of the Year' Gala parade in 1958 presented by the Mannequins' Association of Victoria at the Menzies Hotel. The association were members of the modelling profession. They organised the gala and gave their services free so that all proceeds may go to Junior Legacy Victoria. Every frock in the parade is an individual creation of Melbourne's top couturiers. Afterwards the gowns were put on display for the public at Melbourne Town Hall and entry charge of 2/- was contributed to Legacy.A record that Legacy used gala performances for fundraising events. Refer to Sir Ronald East's history of the Greenwood family pp. 336-371, noteably page 343 that mentions about Henrietta Carr, only daughter on George F. Carr, who married AV Greenwood in 1896. Also reference to The Wattle Club pp. 356-7. Thus giving the connection of the Greenwood and Carr families, the subjects of Charles Wheeler's painting.Painting in glass-fronted frame.Typewritten notation behind the frame - "Greenwood oral family history says that this unsigned painting was done by Charles Wheeler as a demonstration for Rose Greenwood, (A.V. Greenwood's sister). They shared a studio at the Wattle Club Hall at Box Hill circa 1890s. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club.
