This photo was taken at the opening of the footbridge by Sir Winston Dugan in 1936.South Surrey Park was developed on land which had been the property of the Kleinert family. Their land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Klienert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s.This photo is significant as it shows the transition from rural to urban land use in Surrey Hills.Black and white photo taken in the area later known as South Surrey Park. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.A 19-page booklet published in 1936 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Kew Baptist Church in Highbury Grove. Clift (Fremantle) From the Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Saturday 5 September 1936, page 34: "For three days this week chaplains of missions to seamen in different ports of Australia and New Zealand met in conference in Melbourne. Bishop Stephen, chairman of the executive committee of the mission in Melbourne, presided over the conference, which was opened by Archbishop Head celebrating Holy Communion in the Chapel of St. Peter at the mission. Among the questions considered was the problem of foreign vessels, from which nothing is contributed toward the support of the missions. It was felt that there was great scope for work of an international character, and that every effort should be made by the chaplains to bring men from the ships of different countries together. The chaplains said that many thousands of men from foreign ships attended the mission institutes. Efforts will be made for more contact to be made with men on coastal ships, and commendation of men from one port to the next will ensure that the needs of men are cared for as well as possible. An ordained chaplain will be sent from London for a new mission at Geraldton (WA), and a new mission will also be opened at Port Kembla (N.SW.). The chaplains will endeavour to obtain police cooperation in keeping docks and wharves free from undesirable persons. It is hoped that an effort will be made to seek the co-operation of the port authorities in order to ensure the pos-sibility of ships being allowed to be alongside during week-ends and public holidays without having to face the full port charges. To avoid the heavy charges the ships now anchor in the bay during week-ends and public holidays. Melbourne was chosen as the central port for Australia for supplies for mis-sions to seamen, and it was decided that the conference should be held every three years, in Melbourne. Reverend Frank Oliver served as Chaplain at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria from 1930 - 1960. A gift of £20,000 for the rebuilding of the Port Melbourne institute, which was old and dilapidated, was announced at the conference. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, ultimately managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street, Kew from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (14/11/1922-19/01/2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by his grandson Adrian Rigg at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration.The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Circular blue, white and gilt enamel on metal membership medallion produced by the Kew Cricket Club for the year 1935-36 that belonged to Francis Horace Rigg (1882-1946). The medallion is enameled in shades of blue with the Club’s logo on circular white enameled section in the centre. This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of inter-church competitions in Warrnambool. One of the chief sponsors of this inter-church competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer. He had his head office and factory in Warrnambool. The competitions were for indoor sports and this one has been awarded for deck quoits. The game of quoits consists of competitors throwing four or five rings or hoops onto a raised spike some metres away. The hoops are generally made of plaited rope and the game is said to have been started or popularized by sailors on board ship. In deck quoits the raised spike is usually replaced by concentric circles drawn on the playing surface. This game became very popular on ocean liner cruises from the 1920s on. The winner of this trophy, the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) was a leading church activity group for men in the 1930s. A Congregational Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1864 in Liebig Street and transferred to Henna Street in 1940. This church was sold in 1979 to the Salvation Army when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to become the Uniting Church. This trophy is of historical interest as it is one of the trophies dating from the 1930s and awarded by the now-defunct Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association in Warrnambool. This is a silver-coloured cup with an attached stem on a brown Bakelite stand. The cup has two ornamental handles. There is an inscription on one side of the cup. In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consuls at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age." He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed. MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consuls, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr. Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have affected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present-day managers of mines. This junior football shield was given by James Fairbairn (1897-1940), a prominent Western District pastoralist, aviator, local politician and Federal Cabinet minister. He was killed in a Canberra air disaster in 1940. The shield shows that several football teams, including West End, Russells Creek and East Warrnambool won the shield in the 1930s. In 1936 the shield was won outright by West End Football Club. This club, founded in the late 19th century, played in Western District Leagues until 1946 when it joined the newly-formed Warrnambool District Football League. In 1971 it merged with the Allansford Football Club to become the West End-Allansford Club and in 2002 the name ceased to exist when the team name was changed back to Allansford Football Club. This trophy is of interest as a football trophy given over 80 years ago and as a memento of the Warrnambool West End Football Club, a team no longer existing. The sport of Australian football has been, and still is, highly prominent in the Warrnambool district with football first played in the town in 1861. This is a wooden shield with nine silver-coloured metal discs affixed to the shield with metal pins. Eight of these discs are shield-shaped. All of the discs have etched inscriptions. The discs are somewhat stained and the wooden shield has traces of paint on it.
