CPL Mark Lander and SGT Don Williams were taking electronic distance measurements using an MRA-301 tellurometer. To measure the distance, personnel at another site operating another MRA-301 tellurometer would have exchanged the signal emission. This is a photograph of the Director Survey - COL Simon Lemon, CO Army Svy Regt - LTCOL Bob McHenry and probably OC Litho - MAJ Terry Lord inspecting the 1St topographic map printed on the new Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 Printing Press in c1992. *Estimated date based on the Director’s and CO’s period of appointment. The computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. This is a set of four photographs of three Regimental Sergeant-Majors (RSMs) of the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna. Their appointments as RSM spanned from 1963 to 1976. WO1 Robin Wilson’s appointment was from 1963 to 1966. He served in the Australian Army from 1946 to 1979. WO1 Wilson ended his service in another corps as a commissioned officer and reached the rank of Major. WO1 Peter Gale’s appointment was from 1966 to 1968. He served in the Australian Army from 1946 to 1968. WO1 John Hogan’s appointment was from 1968 to 1976. After transfer from the British Army, he served in the Australian Army from 1952 to 1976. WO1 Hogan continued his service in Defence as the RAN Liaison Officer located in Fortuna’s coach house building for several more years. These three formal photos of LTCOL Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID were taken at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 30th of September 1969. LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID joined the Australian Army on the 10th of June 1940 and after rising through the ranks, his career culminated in his appointment as CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1969 to 1970. Despite suffering debilitating poor health during his appointment, LTCOL Sprenger MBE, MID led the Regiment on the unit’s first Freedom of Entry Parade held in Bendigo on the 14th of June 1970. For more information on this occasion, refer to item 6020.8P. Unfortunately, LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID passed away on the 5th of December 1970 and was farewelled with a full military funeral. He is remembered as a model of good leadership. This set of 30 black and white photographs were taken at the Army Survey Regiment’s parade rehearsal held at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo on the 27th of June 1985. The rehearsal was for the Freedom of Entry parade held 1-2 weeks later in 1985. The exact date for the Freedom of Entry parade is not known. The Freedom of Entry to the City of Bendigo was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. The Freedom of Entry parade in 1985 was the fourth time the unit exercised its right of freedom of entry. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980 and 1995. In November 1965 an open day was held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ formation. LTCOL Frank Buckland OBE, MID was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1962 to 1965. After promotion to Colonel, he was appointed as Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from March 1967 to August 1972. COL Buckland OBE, MID was promoted to Brigadier (retired) to the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1973 to January 1976. As a senior officer of field rank (Colonel or above) led the funeral procession, it is presumed the unknown deceased soldier was also a highly ranked field officer. The CO of the Army Survey Regiment – LTCOL Bob McHenry presented the Defence Force Service Medal to five RA Svy personnel in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service. They were SSGT Greg Byers, SGT Peter Hardy, SGT Garry Kerr, SGT Laurie Justin and WO2 Rhys De Laine. This is a set of nine photographs of cartographic typesetting equipment and personnel in Cartographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1968 to 1979. The rooms on the top floor of Fortuna Villa where the photos were taken were formally the nursery and boys bedrooms during the Lansell family’s occupation of the building. The Fotosetter type setting machine replaced the letterpress method of type production in 1956. Its operator entered the text using a type order provided by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen. The type was output on a film positive, which was contacted onto strip film. The text was cut out by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen and affixed onto type sheets using bees wax. Cartographic Squadron’s CPL Arty Lane specialised in the operation of the Fotosetter type setting machine for many years, as shown in photos .3P and .4P. For more information on the Fotosetter, see page 71 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. The computer based Editwriter Model 7500 typesetting system was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and its contractor type setting requirements. SGT Jim McDonald operated the Editwriter for a couple of years in the late 1970’s. He is seen in photos .7P and .8P. reading off a type order and entering text into the computer. See item 6181.23P, photo .1P for a reduced scale photo of SGT Jim McDonald undertaking this task. The Freedom of Entry to the City on the 26th of October 1990 was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. This was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Rene van den Tol, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. Regiment members were treated to a civic reception at the City Hall after the ceremony. This is a set of 14 photographs of an All-Staff meeting held by the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of April 1994. At this meeting CO LTCOL Duncan Burns announced that under Defence’s Commercial Support Program (CSP), the In-House bid submitted in 1993 by a team led by then CO LTCOL Bob McHenry was successful. The In-House bid proposed the establishment of an organisation based at Fortuna to carry out non-core production with 150 of the 373 Survey Corps positions converted to Defence civilian positions. 110 of the Defence civilian positions would be filled voluntarily by military personnel under Section 81B of the Public Service Act 1992 with the remaining 40 positions filled by Public Service recruitment. Other options offered to Survey Corps personnel were postings to 1st Topographic Survey Squadron in Enoggera, QLD, transfer to another Corps in the Australian Army or discharge from the ADF. The In-House bid also proposed 143 Survey Corps military positions to remain at Fortuna to perform ‘core strategic non-sovereign tasks.’ However, Army subsequently decided to abolish the 143 positions, disband 4th Field Survey Squadron, Adelaide, SA and lastly, the demise of the Royal Australian Survey Corp in June 1996. These nine photographs were most likely taken in c1988 in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The equipment operated by the technicians is the KLIMCH camera. The main tasks undertaken by the technicians were most likely enlargements and reductions of map reproduction material. The KLIMSCH Commodore camera was introduced in 1953 and was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was replaced with a new model of the same size in 1979. The new model with its computer-based interface provided productivity gains with improved speed and its consistent results led to less wastage in time and materials. Its variomat lens system provided improved retention of map feature linear weights during the camera reduction process. The camera which was specially made for the Army in Germany was fully automatic and power operated. It was claimed to be one of the biggest automatic cameras of its type in the world. It was made to the specifications of the Royal Australian Army Survey Corps to assist in the production of the very high standard maps for the Army. It was a robust and well-made lithographic printing machine built by the George Mann company in Leeds, UK.
