These four certificates belonged to William Hunter. William Hunter (1893-1971) was a resident of Tatura and Mallacoota. He was a soldier, surveyor and amateur naturalist. The certificates include two first prizes for surveying, a technical scholarship for full day courses and a certificate for Applied Mechanics. William received his Surveying Certificate in April 1916. In June 1887, the Working Men's College opened after Francis Ormond, a noted Victorian philanthropist and member of parliament, suggested that a technical institute be built in Melbourne, offering further education for working men and women. He had offered to match the sum raised through public subscription if the government could provide a site for the College. William Hunter made valuable contributions to our knowledge of far East Gippsland plants. His records were meticulous. Major General Sir Alan Hollick Ramsay, Director of Education 1948-1960 when he retired. He was born 12 March, 1895 and began teaching in 1912. He enlisted in the AIF as a gunner - 21/07/1915. He resumed teaching on his return from the War in 1919. In 1939 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF as Commander Royal Artillery 9th Division. He was appointed GOC (Major General) of 5th Division. He returned to the Education Department, eventually becoming Director of Education and served under both a Labour and Liberal Premier.Certificate printed on beige paper. In 1900 he left the department and taught at Wesley College for nine years - Senior Master. 1909 he rejoined the Education Department as Inspector of Registered Teachers and Schools. Later he was appointed Chief Inspector of Secondary Schools. He died in December 1932 aged 58.Certificate printed on beige paper. This certificate was presented to Donald David Thomson , sleeper hewer, aged 42 years for rescuing S.C. Curtis, aged 52, G. Wylie, aged 54, J. Dalgleish, aged 5 from flood waters at White gulch on the Snowy River on January 8, 1934. (The certificate reads as White's Gulch but should be Watt's gulch.) Although damage estimated at 500,000 pounds was caused by the unprecedented floods along the Snowy River, no lives were lost because of the courageous actions of men like Donald Thomson.A framed copy of a printed and hand-written certificate from the Royal Humane Society of Australia awarded to Donald David Thomson for rescuing victims of the floodwaters in Orbost January 1934.
