His works included a wide variety of music including 'The Parade of Tin Soldiers' (Die Parade der Zinnsoldaten). Jessel was also a music conductor and bandmaster. The instrumental piece 'Die Marokkanische Patrouille' (The Moroccan Patrol) was published in 1911, Opus 227. He was also known for his operettas 'Schwarzwaldmädel'(Black Forest Girl), presented in 1917, and 'Die Postmeisterin' (The Postmistress), presented in 1921. In December 1941 he was arrested and then tortured by the German Gestapo; he died in January 1942. In the early 1920s, The Parade of the Tin Soldiers became very popular; it was presented as part of a show and was re-titled The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. It was also made into a film and its recording was a hit single record. The music continues to be played and presented and is a Christmas-time favourite.This music is significant for its connection with the German composer Leon Jessel, a victim of the Germans for being born a Jew, even though he converted to Christianity in his youth. This collection of items belonged to Emma Eliza Jane Watson's (bPhillips) son and daughter-in-law, John Richard and Edith Emma Watson (b Yung). Emma married Thomas William Watson at St Paul's Anglican Church , 11/11/1865.They lived in Sebastapol, Ballarat North and lastly at "Gracedale" Yendon - a small farm. They had 10 children and also brought up three grandhildren. .7 Emma Eliza Jane Phillips was born on 25th April 1844 in Barrabool (Geelong), the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Anne Phillips (b Goodenough). Sometime in the 1850"s after the death of Richard and the breakup of her marriage to Anthony Beck, Elizabeth moves to Ballarat with her children. The eldest boy Richard William Phillips would have been in his late teens. Elizabeth died on 4th August 1858 (aged 42?) before any of her children married. Ringwood Mail newspaper article clipped from pages 9 and 14, 23 December, 1958.Norwood's First Speech Night FOR its first Annual Speech Night Norwood High School put on a remarkably smooth and entertaining performance. It even broke new ground for these occasions by staging a junior Mannequin Parade. In the appreciative audience were the Mayor and Mayoress of Ringwood (Cr. and Mrs. R. 0. Spencer), Cr.and Mrs. Peter Vergers, Cr.and Mrs. Doug Baxter, Cr.and Mrs. Ben Hubbard, and Mr. George Ormandy (Head Master of Ringwood High School) and Mrs. Ormandy. After the singing of the Norwood High School Song,'Fidelis', the Mayor, as Chairman, gave high praise to the school for its 'mighty effort on its first Speech Night.' It was an historic night, he said, an event which would live in the minds of the boys and girls of the school for as long as they lived. Education was a live issue today, the Mayor said, and it was as well to reflect on what the teaching staff of a school was asked to do. They were asked to teach the children how to play their part in life, to make decent men and women of them. And if the children were a future disappointment to their parents the Head Master and the staff could not be blamed. On behalf of the Council and citizens of Ringwood, the Mayor offered congratulations and good wishes for a happy Christmas. In his report the Head Master (Mr. J. A. Gibson, B.A.) said the school colours of purple and gold had been appropriately chosen because of the golden wattle and purple sarsaparilla which rioted through the district. The badge design was a transition of Nowood to Northward, a symbolic representation of the magnetic compass which formed the central motif of the badge. The fact that the compass is used by travellers as a reliable guide gave the school the motto 'Fidelis' which combined the ideas of faithfulness trustworthiness and dependability. The word was easy to remember and to say, and its meaning set a worthy ideal which the boys and girls of the school could strive to attain. For House names native words had been chosen and they were associated with features of the district. The names Kalinda, Maroondah, Mullum and Yarra had already acquired a special significance for everyone associated -with the school. School traditions were also being established, the report went on, by the holding of annual swimming and athletic meetings and the awarding of prizes, and the school had been helped here by the generosity of certain good people of the community who had presented trophies. In the field of inter-house activities the Couche family had presented to the school the Couche Cup for Swimming Contests, and the Warrandyte cup for aggregate points earned in all sports; Mr. Avison had presented the Norwood Cup. for Athletics Contests, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Godbehear the Rosebank Shield for award to the House gaining the highest aggregate score each year. Members of the Mackinlay family had perpetuated the name of the early owner of the property on which the school is built by donating a sum of money, the interest of which would provide the William and Elizabeth Mackinlay Prize each year for the Dux of Norwood High School. ATHLETIC SUCCESS The gross enrolment of 117, included 52 boys and 65 girls, who were divided into three forms of approx equal ability. The curriculum had been broadened to include excursions to the Art Gallery and Museum, to Orchestral concerts, and trips to Warrandyte, the Maroondah Dam and Healesville Wild Life Sanctuary. The school had taken part in inter-school sports contests during the year and came first in their section of the Swimming Contests held at Olympic Pool, also gaining second place at the Athletic Meeting at Olympic Park late in the year. A Social Service League had been formed in the school and had raised £36/7/3. This had been distributed to the Anti-Cancer Campaign, the Lord Mayor's Hospital Appeal, and Yooralla Crippled Children's Appeal. A Parents and Citizens Association had also been formed which had already raised more than £90 towards school funds. Mr. Gibson expressed the school's appreciation to the Head Master, staff and pupils of Boronia High School where Norwood pupils had been guests, and hoped that Norwood would be able to look after Mitcham High School as well in the coming year. After an informative explanation of the 'Importance and Responsibilities of a High School Advisory Council given by Inspector of Schools, Mr. H. W. Hopkins, B.A., the big moment of the evening arrived—the presentation of prizes and certificates by the Hon. J. W. Manson, MLA. Mr. Manson said the purpose of a school was twofold. It was to teach the children to fend for themselves and to live with one another. He congratulated Norwood High on its good start for the year and also those who didn't win prizes because, he said, they had learnt the most important lesson of all — not to win but to keep on trying. Second half of the program was purely entertainment. The School Drama Club presented a Christmas Nativity tableau and an adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'Christmas Carol' with considerable talent. The unique Dress Parade, conducted on the usual professional lines with a running commentary, was both amusing in its sophistication and delightful for the youthful charm of the mannequins and the excellence of the garments displayed. Attractive winter and summer school uniforms were displayed by boys and girls and featured the purple and gold colouring of the school. The girls' summer uniforms were fresh and cool looking with narrow lavender and white stripes. Gold Cesarine sports frocks were distinguished by a purple cord sash. Garments were made by girls in the Needlework Classes and reflected the greatest credit on both pupils and teachers. Cooking aprons, skirts, frocks and knitted sweaters and cardigans showed a wide variety and charm and the school uniforms were practical and smart. There was a bracket of rollicking folk dancing and a Making Music Interlude in which a group of boys and girls, in full hillbilly rig put on a turn with home-made instruments, penny whistles and their own fresh young voices. Teamwork was very good and the whole thing most amusing. Under the direction of Mr.J. A. Collins, the School choir sang delightfully; the traditional 'Greensleeves' and 'Gaudeums Igitur' being particularly effective. Else Oertel and her daughter Else-Lore were interned in Camp 3A from 1940. Her husband was not interned as he was on a business trip to Germany when war broke out. Friedel Dehnel "Tante Fiffi" made the authentic Bavarian doll and clothes. Friedel, wife of Walter Dehnel, arrived as a young woman from Austria, working in the Victorian snowfields as a chef and was a champion skier. She then became a dressmaker for Melbourne society and insisted that she be interned to be with her husband. She made costumes for the internment camp plays and took over her husband's duties as a cook for Camp A when he was locked up for "insubordination". She was deported with her husband back to Germany after the war and cared for her orphaned nephews and nieces in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.Doll dressed in authentic Bavarian costume. Hilda Elizabeth Foster (1890-1982) was commissioned as a Deaconess in 1914 giving a lifetime of service to the church particularly in the social care aspect of the Gospel. She was also a double certified nurse. Deaconess Hilda Foster began her work as a Deaconess in South Melbourne and then served for 13 years with the Presbyterian Sisterhood in North Fitzroy caring for unmarried mothers and their babies. In 1933 she was appointed Matron of the Presbyterian Girls' Home in Elsternwick where she worked for 15 years. She retired in 1948 when it was noted "In complete dedication matron has given herself to this care of souls". Deaconess Foster was awarded the British Empire Medal for her work in the Queen's birthday honours in 1981. Deaconess Foster was one of the first qualified Mother Christmasses in Australia. Martha Downes was born at Codrington in 1880. She was grand-daughter of the first Presbyterian minister of Clunes. As a child she belonged to the Erskine congregation. She was trained at the Deaconess' Institute and was appointed to the Fitzroy Mission, where the Rev. A.I. Davidson was Superintendent. Miss Downes was placed in charge of the Gore St. branch of the Mission. She started a Sunday morning children's church, a Sunday School, a Sunday evening service, a mothers' meeting, a girls' and boys' club and other activities. She helped raise funds for the Young St. Mission Hall, which was built in 1912. In 1914 Sister Downes retired due to ill health, but returned in 1915 to take charge of the Erskine Mission. Her interest in girls led to the establishment of Erskine Hostel, in a delicensed hotel in Rathdown St. Carlton, where classes, guilds, club meetings and services were held. The Singer sewing machine was purchased [in New Plymouth, NZ] by the donor, Yvonne's, parents as a birthday/Christmas present when she was about six or maybe a little older – therefore about 1935. Elizabeth WEBBER nee EDDY. c1851 - 1928, the daughter of James & ... EDDY was born in Cornwall cl 851. At the time of her marriage she was living at her father's home in Ballarat where James EDDY was a ginger beer manufacturer. Elizabeth, who was 21 years of age exchanged marriage vows with the Reverend Samuel Phelp WEBBER on 4th April 1871. The groom who had left Cornwall in April 1869, was 29 years of age.| The wedding rites, performed by the Rev. Richard WARREN, were those of the Bible Christian Church which at a later date combined with various branches of the Wesleyian to become at the end of the 19'h century, the Methodist Church of Australia.| During Samuel's ministry, he and his wife moved around Victoria - in the goldfields of Ballarat & Sandhurst, later named Bendigo; Horsham and Daylesford and a city parish in Fitzroy. He was also (sic) President Conference B.C.C.| Samuel died during the summer of 1897, on the 14th February, St| Valentine's Day.| It is thought by a family member that this couple had five children, three girls and two boys.| After his death, Elizabeth who was confined to a wheel chair lived with her children. Provenence is unknown but contains potentially rare photos. A comprehensive record of the types of events provided for Junior Legatees in the 1940s. Events such as the Government House Christmas parties and Annual Demonstrations. Also a record of the classes offered to girls and boys. There are photos of Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for school students that has been held annually by Legacy in April. It helps educate and promote the observance of Anzac Day to students. Some of the photos are Junior Legatees that joined the armed forces in the second World War. Pages 7 and 8 show the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to Legacy. They were in Australia to start his term as Governor General of Australia - until 1947. A photo from 1969 of three girls dressed in Christmas costumes. It was taken to showcase the annual demonstration. A newspaper article from 16 October 1969 shows the girls were to perform as skaters in the production of "The Seasons" in the annual demonstration. Their names are Cathy Richardson, 9 of Avondale Heights, Karen Mills, 11 of West Footscray, and Thelma Richardson, 10 from Avondale Heights. A photo of girls in similar costumes posing with a snowman appears in a newspaper clipping at 01824 from 1959 which shows that Legacy reused the elaborate costumes that were produced for the demonstrations. This photo provides an example of the beautiful costumes worn by Junior Legacy girls for Legacy's Annual Demonstrations at the Melbourne Town Hall. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Children of Mr & Mrs Frank Cornell of 4-8 Lorne Parade. Frank Cornell was first listed in Surrey Hills in 1906 at (6) Lorne Parade. In 1908 the listing gives his occupation as a clerk. He was born in 1869 in Richmond, Victoria and died 15 April 1917 in Surrey Hills. Blanche Annie Parsons Cornell (nee Bracher) was born in 1869 in Hokitika, New Zealand; she died on 21 January 1940. Children were: Gilbert Frank Cornell (b1894, Hawthorn; d1908, at Frankston beach, an accidental drowning) Ruth Amelia Cornell (b 1899, Kew; d 29 May 1977, Kew) Lorna Amy Cornell (b 1906, Surrey Hills; d unknown) Patience Blanche Cornell (b1907, Surrey Hills; d unknown. Frank and wife Blanche are buried in Box Hill Cemetery - CE-*-1058. Ruth Amelia married David Ellis, c1922 in Surrey Hills. Carols by Candlelight is a Christmas concert held at the Sidney Myer Music bowl. Programs and candle holders were sold, and collections made during the event to raise money for the Austin Hospital and the Red Cross. 3KZ also recorded the concert, which was played on radio on Christmas Day with a phone number to ring to donate.
