The barge 'Ada' was built in Echuca in 1899. It was 33 metres in length and 6.9 metres wide and was made from timber and iron. It's design was unique as it was half-timber, and half-iron- the iron featured above the water line to prevent the wool bales from getting wet. The 'Ada' was used to carry wool from sheep stations on the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers down to Echuca Wharf for distribution around the world. The Permewan Wright, Murray Shipping Company, owned the 'Ada' and in the1930s the barge was sold to the Evans family who used it to transport timber to it's Echuca sawmill. The 'Ada' was purchased by the Port of Echuca in 1974 and is seen here on the Moama slipway undergoing restoration for Port of Echuca in 1979 to 1980. The remains of the 'Ada' still lie on the banks of the Moama slipway but it has fallen into near complete disrepair.The barge 'Ada' is very significant due to the uniqueness of her design. The hull is timber, up to the water line, then iron from the water line up to protect the bales of wool bales that it transports from water damage. The P.S Pevensey, within the Port of Echuca collection, has the same design feature.The barge 'Ada' in dry dock, on a slipway with a 4 knot marine sign is next to it. The barge is surrounded by trees and has since fallen into disrepair. The P.S Australien was built in 1897 by Richard Wilson, of Moama. In 1937 the vessel was used to tow boilers, winches and derricks to the banks of the Murray River to aide in the construction of Locks 6,7,9 and Yarrawonga Weir. The barge is viewed from the rear, as the rudder can be seen, and shows the enormity of the loads of wool which a barge could carry. The two vessels are tied together and appear to be moored at a small pier.The P.S Australien is one of the oldest paddle steamers built at Echuca. It was a working vessel during the construction of the Yarrawonga weir in the 1930s which was the beginning of the irrigation system which enabled the Agriculture Industry to become such a prominent part of the Murray-Darling River Basin social history. A paddle steamer and a barge, loaded with wool, are seen docked together on a river. Macintosh's sawmill was on the banks of the Murray River in Echuca east where the Banyule State forest is now located. A tramway ran out to it from the main rail line near the iron bridge. Macintoshes Sawmill was one of the largest in the area. (Ref. Clare Jackson. )Macintoshes sawmill was set up by James Macintosh in 1868 in Echuca East. His sawmill prospered and in 1878 was "equal to five normal sawmills" (Ref; Coulson, Helen, "Echuca Moama On the Murray." P.158) He also owned 2 paddle steamers and 8 barges. The P.S Pevensey was built in 1910 in Moama by the Permewan Wright Co. Initially she was a barge, called the Mascotte, but by May 1911 she had been converted into the P.S.Pevensey. Initially the P.S.Pevensey was used as for transporting wool from the Murrumbidgee River Stations. In 1932 the P.S Pevensey carried the largest load of wool ever from the Murrumbidgee River. This record was 2600 bales of wool. She was destroyed by fire at Koraleigh Landing later in 1932, but was soon rebuilt.By 1939 she was running a regular service between Morgan and Mildura. By 1958 it was reported that she was moored above Renmark and not working. In 1967 she was sunk by vandals. In 1968 she was bought by Bill and Norm Collins. They refloated her, restored her and moored her at Mildura. The City of Echuca bought the P.S. Pevensey from the Collins Family in 1973, for $20,000. The P.S. Pevensey came to Echuca Wharf in July 1973 along with Kevin Hutchinson OA., a shipwright who stayed with the P.S. Pevensey for the rest of his life. The P.S Pevensey currently works as a Tourist paddle steamer taking cruises from the Echuca Wharf every day. (Ref. Parsons, R. "Ships of the Inland Rivers. P. 116.)This photograph is significant because it shows the wharf in 1973, being converted into a Tourist precinct. The roof of the cargo shed is being repaired. The P.S Pevensey is tied up to the wharf and looks as if it needs more repairs. The buildings in the background are still used as business venues. The Shamrock Hotel can be seen in High Street. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. You say you will come home after the last shead. I should think so. I had a letter from E Jenkins so I am going down to see her next week we call the baby Fernie now I hope you will agree. I have not ventured to take part in it and don’t think I will either. I get enough dancing all day long and besides I have to furnish the music you ought to see them going when I rattle up the concertina. I also got a reply from Eynesbury and a favourable reply it starts on the 13th Oct. …. I have 800 sheep shorn up to date and am fifth among about 30 men. I am sending two more [Ls] this time which I drew on Saturday. I don’t like sending too much more this time as there is a chance of it going astray and it is not very easily earned…. Things must be humming in Melton with all them babies coming and people getting married… I suppose we will be having new neighbours soon. If Mr Watts is selling out he was getting more property then he could keep. We had light rain on Monday as usual only half a day’s shearing in the shed so that is all we done this week, we took a vote 9 to 6 no shearing so nothing till to morrow morning Thursday so there is still a good fortnights shearing to do, will do nothing Saturday polling day as we have to go 13 miles is near Services where I was last year so we will want the full day 50 men to vote and some will probably have to walk to get there, all solid for Labour. PS Pevensey was the last vessel to be built on the Moama slipway in 1910. it was originally built as the barge Mascotte a year earlier. It is powered by a 20hp Marshall and Sons steam engine and was first used on the Murrumbidgee River where it collected wool bales and brought them back to Echuca where they were loaded onto trains and taken to Melbourne for shipping overseas. The PS Pevensey was named after the Pevensey Station on the Murrumbidgee River. In the 1950's it travelled to South Australia where it survived being burnt and sunk but continued to keep working in the agricultural industry. It was sold to the Port of Echuca in 1973 where it was restored over 3 years and is still the largest vessel operating from the Echuca Wharf. In 1982, it was temporarily renamed The Philadelphia, and starred in the TV mini series " All The River's Run" based on the books by Nancy Cato. In 1985 Prince Charles and Lady Diana visited Echuca and cruised on the PS Pevensey, although it was labelled PS Philadelphia for the occasion. It is the largest vessel operating from the Echuca wharf as it can carry 90 passengers or 120 tons of cargo. PS Pevensey is a Murray River paddle steamer from 1910 and was built at Moama in NSW opposite the Port of Echuca. It was one of the largest towing and cargo paddle steamers on the river and was known as "the great Clydesdale" of the river. PS Pevensey remained operating on the river until 1958 after a number of years lying dormant it was purchased in 1973 and restored at Echuca. It began operating again in 1976 and it is still taking trips. it is one of a small number that still operates in its cargo carrying layout and with its original reconditioned engine. Coming back to Echuca PS Pevensey brought Kevin Hutchinson OAM to work at the Port of Echuca for the rest of his life.A side wheeled paddle steamer.
