Printing Press, C. 1934
This small Adana letterpress was based on a larger press. It was intended for printing stationery such as business cards, visitor’s cards, shop price cards and notepaper headers, Used for letterpress printing, and advertised as “Virtually indestructible”. Used for hobby printing, schools, and similar uses. When donated to Flagstaff Hill the chase still had letter type in it, which was printed out "THE SHADOWS / apahc / the aauage / shaboogie ". Currently, the machine is used by the Flagstaff Hill "Examiner" office to make business cards for use by some of the Volunteers in the Village. HISTORY Donald Aspinall, born in London in 1899, suffered shell shock while serving in World War 1. During his recovery, while still a teenager, he worked his hobby, the design of a small flatbed printing press, then advertised it in The Model Engineer’ in 1918 and received an overwhelming response of orders. In 1922 Aspinall founded the Adana Agency, in Twickenham. His had great success in his sales of flatbed, self-inking wooden presses to hobby printing enthusiasts. Over the years Adana made a variety of machines; flatbed, lever, treadle and powered presses Adana cast its own type in 1925 and has a number of patents for press parts. In the 1980’s the company wound down, and was purchased by Caslon, who still service and supply part for the Adana machines. Printing press; hand operated small letterpress machine made by Adana. Tiny platen style. Model Five-Three (5 inch x 3 inch). Cast metal base and lever handle with rounded end, both painted dark red, rounded red metal lever handle. C. 1934 Marks on foot of stand " REG. Book - Student's Text, The Argus Students' Practical Notebook, 28/09/1948
Printed by the Argus and Australasian Limited in 1948 as a general text book for students. The Argus Newspaper had been printing interesting, informative and instructive articles on various phases of the work in schools every Saturday in their newspaper and the students were expected to cut these articles out and paste them in a convenient form for study and revision. The decision to publish the articles, by the Argus, in one volume was welcomed by the Director of Education, Victoria, J.A. Seitz and stated that it "can be recommended confidently to teachers and pupils."Gives a general overview of a lot of different subjects that students were being taught in the 1940's.It includes such areas as the three layers of government, simple mechanics and electrical theory, nature and general science. It is typical of what was being taught during the construction days in the Kiewa Valley and the owner would have possibly attended either the Tawonga State School or the Mt. Beauty State School. A green paper back text book of general knowledge. Contains nature notes, general science, Australian exploration, civics, and how the wheels go round. This is an Argus Production and the price is stated as two shillings. On the front cover, written in ink, is a name Helen Gunn, A1. Black and White photograph of Road Making Machinery, Kiewa Road Making, 25/08/1938
Construction of the main road from South Tawonga to the Bogong High Plains, to provide access to the construction sites for the new Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme, was commenced early in 1938, the work being undertaken on behalf of the Commission by the Country Roads Board. For the construction work, the Commission purchased three Caterpillar - model R07 - diesel crawler tractors equipped with Kay Brunerei (Brunner) hydraulically operated trailbuilders (angle dozers). This acquisition resulted from a visit to the United States of America in May, 1937 by the Construction Engineer ( Mr. C.H. Kernot) and Assistant Civil Engineer (Mr. J.F. Douglas) where they saw this relatively new type of equipment in use. With the co-operation of the CRB, the Commission demonstrated the operation of these machines at Fishermen's Bend on 6th April, 1938. They were then sent to Kiewa where they commenced operation towards the end of the month. From South Tawonga, the route led immediately across the Western Branch of the Kiewa River necessitating the construction of a bridge 100 feet long. By the end of 1939, the excavation had been 'opened up' for a distance of 19 1/2 miles (approx. 31 km) and of this length, 10 miles (approx. 16 km) had been surfaced. The purchase and use of this type of mechanical equipment in road making was a huge investment, as prior to this most of the work would have been done manually with the use of picks and shovels. Not only were many months of hard manual labour saved, but a very significant amount of time in providing access to the proposed work sites for the new Kiewa Hydro Scheme. This photo is an excellent reminder of how primitive the early machinery was compared to the present but also represents the forward thinking of the State Electricity Commissions engineers in purchasing such innovative equipment . A black and white photograph showing the type of machinery used for road making in the 1930's. It shows a grader being towed by a caterpillar tractor. On the top left hand corner of the photograph , hand written in black ink is the words 'Kiewa Road Making 25/8/1938'. On the right hand side of the photo has been stamped in blue the Number 1. Photograph of Lake Guy Dam, Walkway, Inside Lake Guy Dam, c 1945
Lake Guy Dam is a 'slab and buttress' type wall. A timber frame is built and then filled with concrete. The first batch of concrete was placed in September, 1940. By June, 1941 the buttresses were finished to a height safe from floods and in October of that year a flood of 2,800 cusecs occurred but with only slight damage to the installations. Industrial trouble caused some delays but there was also slow progress on the part of the contractor and the work was taken over by the S.E.C., terminating the contract. The dam was completed in March, 1944. A walkway was made through the dam wall. Lake Guy was named after Mr. L.T. Guy who was the Resident engineer, in charge of construction work and associated activities on the Kiewa Area from 1939 to November 1946.Shows the walkway placed as part of the Lake Guy (Junction) Dam wall. Stripping of the foundations commenced in 1948 and the first concrete in the dam was poured in May, 1949. With the suspension for the winter months of work on the High Plains, it was possible to increase the number of men, and work then proceeded at a steady pace for the remainder of the year. Some interruption was caused by a flood in September, which over topped the rockfill coffer dam. By the end of 1950 17,000 yards of material had been excavated from the foundations and 4,000 cubic yard of concrete placed. Work at Clover Dam was completed in 1953, but two bays were left open for flood emergency. The pondage was filled on the 16th August, 1954. A pictorial record of the placing of concrete foundations of Clover Dam and also shows the methods of construction used at this site in 1949.Black and white photograph taken during the construction of Clover Dam. Framed pen and ink sketch of Yendon station, Mervyn Hill, 2010
Sketch was done as a sample of the artist's work when a drawing was sought to be the picture of the station on the interpretive sign planted at Yendon station. Although this is an excellent interpretation of the station building, it was thought to be too detailed for the purpose.Pen and ink detailed drawing of Yendon station building, with 2 people standing on the platform. Frame is timber, 50mm wide, mat black, with an 8mm silver trim around the cut-out hole.Signed by Mervyn Hill at the bottom right hand corner.yendon railway station, hill, mervyn, ink drawing -
