Boys classes were held in various locations around Melbourne. It gave the opportunity for Junior Legatees to meet and be involved with activities they may have missed out on due to the death of their fathers. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. Activities included basketball competitions, gymnastics, boxing, judo and swimming lessons. Photographs of Junior Legatees doing outdoor activities. Melbourne Legacy arranged many events for Junior Legatees to experience. One photo has 12 children on bicycles in a forest. Another has four children in kayaks playing and having a water fight with their paddles. Another photo has a young child with a supervisor getting ready for abseiling. Names are unknown. It was with a group of photos from the 1990's in a folio with paper labels. The article in The Answer explains it was a the annual two week summer camp for Junior Legatees. In 1995 it was held at Cave Hill Creek, near Beaufort and the nearby Mt Cole State Forest. The children were supervised by a team of 12 experienced leaders from the Melbourne Legacy Leadership group assisted by educational instructors. A total of 50 attended the camp (27 boys and 23 girls). Most came from Melbourne but some from country Victoria and 9 from South Australia. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material that was issued to inform the public on the work of Legacy. One edition was included as a supplement in Mufti, (a veterans publication) in September 1982. The first edition featured Prince Phillip and the words he spoke during a telecast in 1980. Legatee Ken Green was the president. The edition in September 1982 had definitions of key words such as Legatee, Junior Legatee and an explanation of where money came from. It featured a photo of Alisa Watson of the Youth Leadership Group. Edition No 4 was from the Diamond Jubilee Year in 1983, it featured an article on Legatee Frank Doolan and the foundation of Legacy. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aim to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp, this is believed to be Somers School Camp. These photos are from 1992. An article in the widows' newsletter in 1992 explains more detail on the 1992 camp. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp. It is a wonderful gathering of Junior Legatees, Legatees, and dedicated helpers. 50 junior legatees attended this camp (in 1992) with the personal attention almost one-to-one. With ages ranging from 22 to into the 60s, Legacy has to ensure it caters for the differing needs. Legatees headed by Camp Chief, Jim Hammon and Chairman of the Handicapped Dependents Committee, Merv Tickell, were supported by two Camp Co-Ordinators and 50 helpers known as 'leaders'. Many of the leaders are people in the workforce wishing to give something back to the community. Junior Legatees are organised into groups. They participate in horse-riding, swimming, golfing, strawberry picking, and many other activities.
