Albert VIctor Grinton No 5024 enlisted in the 21st reinforcements 13th Batt AIF on 21.1.16 age 18 years. When he got to England he transferred to the 38th Batt to be with his brother Jack. Embarked for France 22,11,1916, WIA 28.5.1917 SW Face, rejoin unit 19.6.1917, WIA 12.10.1917, rejoin unit 10.5.1918, promoted CPL 3.9.1918, hospital 14.9.1918 Nasal Obstruction, rejoin unit 3.10.1918, promoted Sgt 7.10.1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for actions near Clery on 31.8.18. John William Grinton enlisted in C Coy 38th Batt AIF on 3.2.16 age 23 years. Both became Sergeants and both were WIA twice. They came home together on the same boat. Part of the Grinton collection which included hundreds of negatives and developed photos taken by Jack during the War. James Walker “MM” No 2361 AIF. Records are misleading but it appears he enlisted on 28.9.14 age 37 years and remained at Depot before joining the 7th reinforcements 14th Batt on 5.7.15. Embarked for Egypt 10.8.15, transfered to the 46th Batt 3.3.16, he is charged twice in Egypt before embarking for France on 2.6.16 and is charged twice more, one serious and is sentenced to 5 years Penal Servitude on 30.12.16. The penalty is reduced to 2 years hard labour on 2.2.17. He is released and rejoins his unit on 25.1.18. Somewhere between this date and 10.5.18 when he is WIA with Shell concussion he is awarded a Military Medal. He returns to Australia and is discharged medically unfit on 28.10.18. Membership Card along with the funeral notice, is a subsequent newspaper article written at the time of Walter West's death, which reads: Death of Pioneer Settler/ A pioneer settler of/ the Red Cliffs irigation/ district and one of the/ last men to be evacuated/ from Gallipoli, died sud/denly on Saturday night/ aged 84./ In 1922 Mr. Watler Thomas/ West came to Red Cliffs/ where he established Block/ 86 in the irrigation district./ He lived there until his/ death on Saturday after playing bowls at the Red/ Cliffs rinks on Saturday/ afternoon./ Mr. West was born in Jeparit and served with the/ 24th Battalion in Egypt and/ Gallipoli./ He was awarded the Mili/tary Medal in France in/ 1917 and the Military Cross/ in 1918 when he captured/ single handed an enemy/ machine gun post./ He settled at Red Cliffs/ on his return when the/ area was placed under irri-/gation./ For 25 years he operated/ a unique partnership with/ the late Mr. Martin Nippe, his adjoining property/ owner. Female Relative Badges were issued to the nearest female relative (usually wives or mothers) of those who engaged in active service overseas during the First and Second World Wars. Two Female Relative Badges were issued during the First World War. One was issued to the nearest female relative of soldiers, airmen, nurses, and masseuses who left Australia for active service abroad; the other to the nearest female relative of members of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) who had enlisted for general naval sea service for at least a period of the war, and who performed service outside Australian waters. A bar was suspended below the badge to indicate additional relatives involved in the war effort. The Female Relatives Badge was promulgated under Military Order 280 of 1917 and superseded by Military Order 1818 of 1918.
