This label comes from the Liebig Street, Warrnambool bookshop of Elma Sarll. The daughter of James and Agnes Sarll, she was born in Warrnambool in 1902 and died in 1981. It is believed that Elma Sarll’s shop was operating in the mid 20th century. This fire extinguisher was used for commercial purposes in the Nullawarre Post office. The item was made in England by the Pyrene Co Ltd (1914-1971), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fire fighting equipment in the early to mid 20th century. The extinguisher had a pump action and probably contained carbon tetrachloride. Nullawarre is a small agricultural settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. The Nullawarre area was settled in the late 1860s and 1870s and today has a store and Post Office and a school. Charles Williams was the Post Master at Nullawarre in the early to mid 20th century and also delivered the mail. His wife, Vida was the Post Mistress. This fire extinguisher is of interest firstly as an example of a common item used commercially in the past and secondly as an item that came from the Nullawarre Post Office, used in this commercial building in the early to mid 20th century. This is the Eighth Reader in the series of school readers introduced in 1928 for the Education Department of Victoria and used extensively in Victorian schools in the early to mid 20th century decades. This copy was in use as a Form Two (Year 8) class set at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s .This book is of general interest, being the final book in the series of school readers that were in widespread use in Victorian schools from the late 1920s to the 1950s. The book is also of interest because it was used at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s and has the signatures of nine pupils who used the book at that time. Fob (or pocket) watches were developed in Europe in the 16th century. These watches were designed to be carried in a small pocket and attached through the means of a 'fob' which could be a chain or made from a variety of materials such as leather. This pocket watch was manufactured by the Western Clock Co. (Westclox) in the mid 20th century. This jacket was part of the working uniform of the Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade in the mid 20th century. It belonged to John (Jack) Sizeland, a member of the Fire Brigade for over 37 years. He retired in 1977. Prompted by a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street the Warrnambool Fire Brigade was established in the mid 1860s. It has been successful in Victorian Fire Brigade Championships over the years, especially in the 19th century. It is currently situated in Mortlake Road. This jacket is of interest as an example of the clothing worn by firefighters in Victoria in the mid 20th century. It is also of interest because it was worn by Jack Sizeland, a local firefighter for over 37 years. This is a black double-breasted cloth jacket with six brass buttons down the front and two brass buttons on the lapels. This is a complete uniform of the Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade in the mid 20th century. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade, located today in Mortlake Road, Warrnambool, was established in 1863. The formation was prompted by a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade has a long proud history of service to the people of Warrnambool and district for over 150 years. The uniform belonged to John (Jack) Sizeland, a firefighter for over 37 years. He retired in 1977. This uniform is of some significance as it shows the type of uniform worn by Warrnambool firefighters in the mid 20th century. It is also of importance because it belonged to a local firefighter, Jack Sizeland. This is a Warrnambool Fire Brigade uniform consisting of:- .1 A black cloth single-breasted jacket lined with black and white material. This notebook has been used in the Nullawarre Post Office in the mid 1900s. It lists the telephone exchange codes of places in Victoria and also the code for the telephone charges to those places. Charles and Vida Williams were the Post Master and Post Mistress at Nullawarre Post Office during the mid 20th century years. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool and is mainly an agricultural area. European settlement first occurred in the late 1860s. This notebook is of some interest as one used in the day-to-day business of the Nullawarre Post Office in the mid 20th century.This is a notebook which was originally set up as a Postman’s Redirection Book but has been used to list alphabetically telephone exchange areas and their codes. The book has an alphabetical index on the side of the pages and printed black lines and hand-ruled lines on the pages. The cover is light brown with blue binding on the spine and the binding is partly giving way. There is black printing and handwritten writing on the front cover. The material on the pages is handwritten in blue ink and pencil. This box has been used to store photographic glass slides. Since the 1850s glass slides or lantern slides have been used in photography and were particularly popular from the 1870s on. They preceded photographic film and were eventually eclipsed by the 35 mm. colour slides produced by Kodachrome in the mid 20th century. Glass slides, however, were still in use up to the 1990s in some scientific areas such as astronomy because of the stability of glass ware. This container has no known local provenance and is retained for display purposes.This is a brown varnished wooden container made in a rectangular shape. It is hinged at one end with two metal hinges and has two metal clips on the sides to keep the container closed. There are also two metal clips at the top perhaps for storage purposes. Stoneware or pottery canisters were widely used throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries for storing and preserving a wide range of kitchen food ingredients. Bendigo Pottery was established in 1858 and is Victoria's oldest working pottery. It was founded by George Duncan Guthrie (1828–1910) who abandoned his potter’s wheel in Scotland to join the Australian gold rush. He found a clay deposit perfectly suited for the production of ceramics, so returned to his former profession as a master potter. The population explosion created by the Australian gold rush resulted in an increased demand for all kinds of locally manufactured goods. The Bendigo Pottery became one of regional Victoria’s most important industrial enterprises. By the late 1800s the Pottery was making all kinds of household wares. One of its most popular lines was the mass produced, affordable and functional earthenware such as these canisters.These items are significant on a state and national level due to the importance of Bendigo pottery as a major Victorian manufacturer whose products were widely used in Australian homes.A group of 3 stoneware and ceramic canisters of assorted sizes. These gloves were donated by Miss E. Kerr of Warrnambool and were probably worn by her. The Ponting family has been prominent in the timber and building business in Warrnambool since the 1920s and still operate today. Miss Kerr was a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in the 1970s and donated many items, especially household goods. Many women in the early to mid 20th century owned leather gloves which they wore mostly with suits and coats in the winter time. They can still be purchased today. These gloves are of interest as an example of the type of gloves worn by women in the 20th century. They will be useful for display.These gloves are made of a light brown leather. They have a leather string lace inserted as a decorative pattern on the wrist openings and the same lacing on the upper sides of the gloves but in this area the leather string is missing. These three flour bags belonged to Helena Warren (nee McKeown) who was a self-taught photographer who became the local press correspondent and producer of postcard images. She was married to William John warren and lived in Newmerella. Flour bags were used for bulk purchases of flour in early to mid 20th century. They would have been laundered and re-used for storage. In earlier times empty flour bags were washed and boiled and then made into tea towels or children’s bloomers, or underwear. The flour bags are good examples of packaging and design for Australian produce which sold across Australia and overseas in the mid 20th century. This petticoat came from the estate of Ena Heazlewood and was donated to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society by Ena’s daughter. It appears to have been home-made. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and worked as a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at the time. They later lived in Sydney. A petticoat such as this one would have been stiffened with starch and worn under a ball dress (or a stage costume) in the mid 20th century. This petticoat is of interest as an example of a skirt worn underneath a ballroom dress or a stage costume in the mid 20th century. It also has some provenance as it come from the estate of Ena Heazlewood, a former Warrnambool resident.This item is a white cotton petticoat with a flap opening at the front waist enclosed by two white buttons. The petticoat is gathered at the waist to make a wide flared skirt and has alternating panels of plain white cotton and broderie anglaise material. There is a flounce at the end stitched with cotton-covered rope at the top and the bottom of the flounce. These Christ Church Warrnambool badges were made about the mid 20th century and were either given to church members assisting with the fair held in the church buildings and grounds in the latter part of the year or were sold to community members to raise funds for the church. The Anglican community in Warrnambool first met in a building in Liebig Street in the early 1850s and in 1856 Christ Church in Henna Street was opened with additions in the 1860s and the tower being erected in 1882. This glass milk bottle held one pint of milk and was filled in an assembly line at a milk factory. It would have had a paper top. Milk in the mid 20th century was delivered daily to households in glass bottles and left at the front door or door step. The commercial production of milk and other milk products in Victoria dates back to the 19th century with the Western District still having an important dairying industry. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, situated at Allansford, commenced operations in 1888 and still operates today. There are other milk-related factories in the Warrnambool area at Dennington and Koroit. The jacket was part of the uniform that served both as a dress uniform and a work uniform. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863 following unsuccessful attempts to establish a permanent fire service in the town. It was prompted by a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade, now located on the Mortlake Road, has been successful in Victorian Fire Brigade competitions and demonstrations, particularly in the 19th century. The owner of the belt and uniform was John (Jack) Sizeland, a member of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade for over 37 years. This belt is of interest as it was part of a Warrnambool Fire Brigade uniform during the second half of the 20th century. It also has individual local provenance as it belonged to Jack Sizeland, a member of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade who retired in 1977 after 37 years of service. This is a brown leather belt with a gold metal buckle and nine punched holes on the buckle, two of them hand-punched. It has a leather attachment to keep the belt end in place. This beaded dress collar is of a style from the mid 20th century - possibly even as early as the 1930's. It is designed to be easily removed and worn with different outfits - e.g. a dress, knitted top or blouse. Articles from Australian newspapers (particularly the Women's fashion pages) in the decades from the 1930's through to the 1950's often mentioned society ladies wearing "beaded collars" when describing their fashions and in the 1950's "beaded collars" were being made and imported from Japan however this particular collar appears to have been handmade. Unfortunately the maker of this collar is unknown.This item is an example of how women in the mid 20th century used their needlework skills to personalise and embellish an item of clothing (a collar) designed in a practical way to be able to be used with different items of clothing. Lady's beaded collar with a decorative floral design of flowers made with blue beads, outlined with bronze beads on a white beaded background. Bronze beads have also been used to "draw" leaf shapes and tendrils and outline a border all around the collar. The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. Fenton and John W. Fenton in an old glass factory in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Originally, they painted glass blanks from other glass makers, but started making their own glass when they became able to buy the materials they needed. They moved across the Ohio river to Williamstown, West Virginia, and built a factory in 1906. The first year for glass production was 1907. Frank Fenton was the designer and decorator. Jacob Rosenthal, a famous glass chemist is known for developing chocolate and golden agate glass. Perfume bottles for the Wrisley Company in 1938 were made in French opalescent glass with the hobnail pattern In 1939, Fenton started selling Hobnail items in milk glass. During the Great Depression and World War II, Fenton produced practical items such as mixing bowls and tableware. Fenton ceased "traditional" glassmaking at the Williamstown, West Virginia factory in July of 2011. Dressing tables (also known as Vanity Tables in the U.S.A.) have been around since the beginning of the seventeenth century, however it wasn't until the early to mid 20th century that they began to be found in the homes of the middle class and they were often a matching part of a bedroom suite. Dressing tables often featured a variety of objects such as combs, brushes, hand mirrors, perfume bottles, cosmetics, nail buffers, ring holders, jewellery and trinket boxes and trays. The origins of this tray are unknown however its design is reminiscent of trays (and Dressing Table Sets) produced by two English firms in the mid 20th century - "Delina" and "Regent of London". A paper (written by the Warwickshire Industrial Archeology Society) notes that the products items produced by "Regent of London" in the 1940's "satisfied a demand for previously unattainable items, offered to the general public aching for change after wartime privations, post war austerity and years of having to 'make do and mend'." This tray is composed of several decorative elements and materials. The metal border is gilt brass with two filigree bow handles, the main part of the tray is two pieces of circular glass and the encased doily is a mix of embroidered net and petit point. It was suggested in the paper written by the Warwickshire Industrial Archeological Society that the different pieces would have probably been produced elsewhere and brought to the factory to be assembled into the finished product. This vanity or dressing table tray is significant as it is a rare example of an accessory available to and used by women in the mid 20th century. It is also significant as an example of an everyday household item which would have been a valued possession and was made in a style that reflected the importance placed on it to be decorative as well as functional.Round footed dressing table tray with a gilt brass border, filigree bow handles and an embroidered net and petit point doily encased in glass. These gramophone needles were manufactured by The Gramophone Company Limited for use in gramophones that had an arm in which to insert a needle to play an old shellac record. The Gramophone Company was an early recording company based in the United Kingdom and was the parent organization for the His Master’s Voice label of recording devices. The company was founded in 1897 and merged in 1931 with another company to form E.M.I. (Electric and Musical Industries) but the name The Gramophone Company continued in Britain until the 1970s. Gramophones were a popular household item from the late 19th century until the mid 20th century when more sophisticated recording and playing devices were invented. These gramophone needles is of some interest as an example of entertainment devices of the past. It will be useful for display. .1This is a metal box with a lid containing an image of a dog and a phonograph (‘His Master’s Voice’) painted in white and brown on a dark blue background. Inside the tin are about 150 metal gramophone needles, most of them being a little rusted. The needles are covered with a sheet of brown paper with yellow printing. The tin itself is rusted and the printing is discoloured. A ring box used by a Warrnambool Jeweller in the mid 20th century This ring box was used by the Warrnambool business of F J Gill & Co which operated in Liebig Street in the period 1920-1960. Frederick James Gill (1881-1961) was a consulting optician in 1919 and operated a business in Liebig Street. In the 1950's the jewellery business also operated in Terang and Camperdown. Cream hinged bakelite ring box with velvet cushions to hold a ring. The satin material inside the lid has a small brown sticker.
