Memorabilia - Sports Shields
... annually to winning teams in athletic or rifle sports events... annually to winning teams in athletic or rifle sports events ...These shields were likely perpetual trophies, awarded annually to winning teams in athletic or rifle sports events. The engraved nameplates suggest that they were used for decades, passing from one champion to the next. The presence of rifle sports in the inscription suggests that this competition was possibly held in a military, school, or community sports club setting. The sports shields are composed of two wooden plaques, one large shield-shaped and the other smaller and oval. Each shield features multiple small silver plates affixed to the wood, engraved with names and dates. The larger shield has a central silver plate with ornate detailing, which serves as the main inscription area for the title of the award. A decorative banner-shaped metal piece sits above the central plate, though some of the engraving has faded. The shields exhibit signs of wear and tarnish, particularly on the silver-plated elements, indicating age and long-term handling. ... of native dances and corroborees. The trophies for the sports events... and corroborees. The trophies for the sports events are to do competed ...1934 was the year that Victoria celebrated the European settlement of Victoria. Events were planned through Victoria. In Kew a children's picnic was planned. The following newspaper report records what happened: KEW CHILDREN'S PICNIC. Owing to rain the picnic which the Kew Centenary celebrations committee had arranged for children resident in the municipality, which was to have taken place at Victoria Park yesterday, had to be postponed. The organisers decided to forward to the various schools the luncheons which had been prepared for the children and hurriedly made arrangements for their entertainment at a picture theatre. Needless to say the theatre was crowded to capacity, in addition to special pictures a punch and judy show was provided and a number of aborigines who are in Melbourne for the Centenary gave, exhibitions of native dances and corroborees. The trophies for the sports events are to do competed for at a later date.
