Report - original typed 3 foolscap pages, dated 24/1/1922 signed by the Manager Cable System (Mr. Roberts), to the Chief Manager, concerning an accident at the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale St where the auxiliary cable was cut due to a error by the policeman on duty directing tramcars, the pilot (pointsman/signaller) and one Gripman. Reports on the disciplinary hearing and makes recommendations as to the change of equipment and discussions with the Police department. Makes reference to somnolent market gardeners and general congestion on market days. Has names of Mr Barnes (claims Superintendent), Pilot Frederick Dainty, Gripman Frederick Houston, C. H. Victorian Governor, Sir Henry Barkly visited Bendigo in Oct. 1861 as part of his regional tour that included, Castlemaine, Chewton, Back Creek and Inglewood.Buff coloured document. The Bendigo East Primary School was opened in 1915. In 1916 it was decided to plant an ANZAC Avenue of trees and this was completed on 16 June 1916. The plaques were placed after WW1. The school was closed in 1998 and the plaques were relocated to the nearby White Hills Secondary College in Napier Street on this board. In the early 2000's the Honour Board was donated to what is now called the Bendigo Military Museum. One hundred years after planting, later in 2016 the trees were removed in controversial circumstances. On the board 8 never returned, there is 1 x "DCM" winner, 1 x "MC" winner and 1 x "MM" winner. There are 3 x Wright Brothers of which 2 never returned. The plaque states that the soldiers attended the school which is obvious they could not have due to the opening date. The following Heritage report suggests that the names were of individual soldiers who lived in the area. EXTRACT FROM HERITAGE COUNCIL VICTORIA 2016 SUBMISSIONS HEARING “The Bendigo East School (‘the school’) was officially opened by Mr Frank Tate, Director of Education, on 7 April 1916. Approximately two months later, on 16 June 1916, Arbor Day was celebrated at the school with the planting of an ‘Anzac Avenue’ along a path from the front gate on Strickland Road (‘the pathway’) to commemorate the landing of soldiers at Gallipoli. The school’s ‘Anzac Avenue’ was one of an estimated 37 known to have been planted by school children throughout Victoria during mid-1916 as part of a program led by the Education Department, which included a recommendation to schools on 18 May 1916 that commemorative avenues be planted (‘the 1916 plantings recommendation’). At around this time, avenues of honour were also planted across Victoria to commemorate fallen WWI soldiers (‘the wider commemorative plantings phenomenon’). There were other commemorative plantings at the Place away from the pathway (‘the other commemorative plantings’). Anzac Day was celebrated at the Place in the years subsequent to 1916 and on 11 December 1920 the school’s ‘Anzac Avenue’ was officially opened. Embossed copper plates, mounted on wood, were fixed in front of the trees in memory of individual soldiers from the district who had seen active service in WWI. There is evidence that as many as 32 plaques may have been made and affixed (‘the name plaques’). Plaques were removed from their locations at some stage before 1964, mounted on a board and displayed in the school building. This article look at the Temperance Hall which was built in 1860 for the Bendigo Total Abstinence Society and its neighbour extending up the hill. Temperance Hall was designed by Vahland and Getzschmann. The building next was also built by Vahland and Getzschmann as a residence for Robert Strickland, later it was acquired by Dr. Oliver Penfold who extended the building and set up his medical practice . Photocopied newspaper cutting from Bendigo Advertiser 22nd Dec 1952, pertaining to donation of Joseph Brady bound notebooks. Brady was engineer of the Bendigo Waterworks in 1858 and accepted appointment as engineer to the contractors of the construction of a segment of the Melbourne Sandhurst railway. One book was related to the Bendigo Waterworks containing particulars of Crusoe Reservoir. The other surrounding Cornish & Bruce contracts for the middle section of the Mt Alexander Railway. Books donated to Bendigo by Mrs A Strickland of Currie King Island, Brady's granddaughter. The next page has three newspaper cuttings. The first is 'The Victorian Waterworks'. It has costings for contracts for water supply, amounts which will supply water from the Coliban to the Castlemaine and Sandhurst districts, and if the Government should purchase the Bendigo Waterworks, and to construct the Upper Coliban reservoir, additional expenditure may be required. (from Daily Telegraph - 1868). The second is some information on The Yan Yean Aqueduct. The third is a letter to the Editor of the Argus from Joseph Brady, dated August 2, 1870, in reference to repairing the leak in the outlet tunnel of the Malmsbury Reservoir. He says the repair of the tunnel was not essential and is unnecessary and 2nd. If the bank was cut through and restored, for years the bank would not be safe, as the earth used in the restoration would require time to subside and unite with the old work. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 18 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. This photograph, dating from c.1926, forms part of a group of photos of the Strickland Spur track, taken on a bushwalking trip to Marysville, Victoria. John Chapman has written in 'Bushwalking Clubs - A Brief History', about the establishment in Victoria of the first bushwalking club in 1888, and the popularisation of bushwalking during the interwar period. The photograph shows either the Steavenson or Taggerty River near Marysville. This photograph is of old mine workings on the site of the Spring Creek diggings. Spring Creek is a contact zone for granite pluton and siltstones, shales and standstones; which has, over time, encouraged natural springs to form. Enriched with gold washed out of the surrounding granite, these alluvial deposits achieved fame from 1852 onwards as the Spring Creek Diggings sprang to life (not realised as geographically important until 1871). In Spring Creek that runs behind the main street of Beechworth, near the foot of Newtown Hill a pint pot of gold was discovered on one of these expeditions in 1852 by prospectors Baker and Strickland and the gold rush town of Spring Creek was formed. Australian gold rushes have always created a sense of independence and freedom; as do-it-yourself, off-grid, low-tech adventures. People of all backgrounds were drawn to the gold fields by the prospect of riches and adventure, but they also learned self-sufficiency and found freedom of expression. Industry boomed, new practices were adopted and social norms were upended. This image is of historical significance as it informs on the history of Australian gold mining. It represents the innovation that accompanied the mining industry and the importance of gold mining in town building and regional histories. Copies of newsletters to Legacy widows in 1960s. There were usually 4 or 5 editions per year. Newsletters include a notice from the Senior Widows Club coordinator F R G Strickland and information about events and meetings. The editor was Mrs B E Shephard. There were so many widows that the meetings had to be held at the Melbourne Town Hall to accomodate the numbers. November's meeting as a picnic in the Botanical Gardens and January the widows met in Fitzroy Gardens. In November there were calls for nominations for the committee members for the following year. Committee comprised of a President, 2 Vice presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Assistant Secretary and 14 members of the committee. The first edition in the new format was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The newsletter was priced at 1D a copy. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items.
