Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. All three photos are of the Ballarat City Band preforming at the 1921 South Street Competitions. Frank Wright is the Bandmaster and conductor for the B grade competition and .1- for the "A grade" test piece the conductor was Bert Baile. Bob Pattie of the Ballarat Brass Band believes the Ballarat City Band with Frank Wright as Conductor travelled to Queensland to take part in a contest up there. This is supposed to be the very first time that a Victorian Band had gone to Queensland to take part in a contest. "Frank Wright is actually marching with his band. That's him near the side drummer. He has a bow tie on and dinner suit. Note the dog: In those days you couldn't keep a dog away from the Band Contest ... everyone in town was there! Bell used by the conductor or passengers to signal to the driver - stop, proceed or an emergency stop. The actual bell and part of the striker are missing. The striker has been broken off. The "JS" indicates it was made by John Stephenson of New York who made tramway equipment and the first cable tram saloon cars for Melbourne. Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars.Part of a brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, part of the bell striker and bell pull part. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born in 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. He was the youngest of eleven children. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was appointed in 1934 as the Musical Director of the London County Council (the GLC or Greater London Council), where he organized many amazing concerts in most of the 150 parks, in and around the London district. He was also responsible for some of London’s major concerts at Kenwood, the Crystal Palace and Holland Park. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and Conducting and was a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Frank was awarded an M.B.E. in 1967 and he died in November 1970. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Small 21 page booklet has a blue card cover and is printed in black and white. N&C - Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars.Brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, bell, striker, bell pull part, sheet metal domed section that is secured to the underside of the bell with one nut to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. The flat leather strap indicates it was used on a cable tram, rather than an electric tramcar which were fitted with round leather cords. The leather strap is riveted to a round steel ring.Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on cable trams.Brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, bell striker and bell pull part. "Surburban tickets of the Victorian Railways - H K Atkinson" published 1991 notes on page 123 "Edmondson tickets issued from trams were held in small pouches in the conductor's bag and were punched with a special date punch (ie. 1 to 31) to denote the day of issue." It is thought that the month would have been used as well, otherwise people could recycle tickets for each day of the month. No punch yet seen by the Museum. The Kew Philharmonic Society was founded by Dr. Ehrenfeld, c.1946, who was also the Orchestra's first conductor. He was succeeded by Harold Badger in 1954 following the death of the former. During the 1940s and 1950s, the Orchestra played its concerts in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street. In 1960, the Orchestra relocated to the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road (the site of the current Kew Library).The Arthur Dear Collection is a comprehensive collection of theatrical ephemera relating to performances by theatrical and musical organisations from within and outside the former City of Kew who typically performed at venues in Kew during the 1950s and 1960s.Concert programme of a Special Concert on 27 April 1960, held to mark the opening of the new City Hall in Kew (the location of the current Kew Library). The concert was led by a special Guest Conductor, Stuart Wilkie.
