But thereafter, although many continued to do well, the average annual earnings of the diggers declined rapidly. In 1858, when there were over 100,000 diggers in Victoria, few could have been doing really well ; only the hope of a ''lucky strike'' kept many of them on the diggings. I arrived here on Sunday fornoon, and was much gratified at the sight that presented itself: every here and there was Divine Service being performed by ministers of almost every persuasion, whose ministrations were attended by devout and numerous congregations. The services were repeated in the evening and when the psalms and hymns were sung by the respective assemblages on the slopes of almost every hill, it really put one in mind of what e have been told of primitive times, and the days of our forefathers. Prices were rising all over Victoria, but they rose even more steeply at the diggings, because, with drays and bullock-drivers at a premium, and with the roads in a bad state, the cost of cartage to the fields rose rapidly. But contemporary writers speak of almost continuous ''streets'' of hastily erected stores in the centres of most of the important goldfields - even before the establishment of goldfields towns.
