Witnesses at the time accepted that the map showed the location of the stockade at Ballarat and the route taken by the military and police when the stockade was attacked on 03 December 1854. White Flat was an early gold diggings. As early as 1856 the White Flat Drainage and Mining Co. constructed water races, drained the swampy land, and changed the course of the Yarrowee Creek. Demolition appears to be under way in this image of the Alfred Hall. It was built in 1862 for the visit of Queen Victoria's son Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh, across the Yarrowee (which formed the municipal boundary) apparently because the municipalities of Ballarat and Ballarat East could not decide who should have the honour! The Alfred Hall held many of the city's events over 89 years, but was symbolically locked up the day the Civic Hall in Mair Street was officially opened, in August 1956. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. Wesleyans at Magpie collected money to built a tent chapel at Magpie, but the rush had moved on before it was erected so the tent was taken to Ballarat where it becme the basis of the Lydiard Street Wesleyan Church (now Uniting Church). A bluestone church was later bulit above the Magpie School which was demolished in the 1960s with the stone used in the entrance building at Sovereign Hill.A large rock at Magpie, beside the Yarrowee Creek, was called Pulpit Rock. In 2019 Gong Gong Reservoir Park is set in natural bush surrounds. There are scenics views, picnic and BBQ facilities with toilet facilities available on weekends.
