Advised that the Sunday run outs in the late morning, early afternoon used this crossover to form the first Eaglehawk tram service. .2 - No. 17, with destination of "Quarry Hill", near the Railway station. Ephemera - Ticket, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), SEC Provincial Tramways "Staff Ticket"
Demonstrates aspects of the SEC ticketing, governance and monitoring systems. The Pass or ticket could be issued to a SEC staff member to enable travel on the tramways while on business. Style remained very similar to the end of the tramways.Six blocks of SEC Provincial Tramways "Staff Ticket" and four individual tickets. Individual tickets printed on heavy dark grey (Grey 200 gsm card) with black printing. Ticket blocks consist of 50 printed tickets, with stubs, stapled with red cardboard covers. Ticket good for single trip only, of use by employees when travelling on Commission's business. Form No. TYE-2-19. Not known when printed, possibly 1960's maybe earlier. 2101.1 - Aa 002580 - 2599. Appears to be on a tour special with passengers in the tramcar. Has the Golden City Hotel in the background. Photo taken early 1960's. Tramcar has an SEC "Use Electricity for Cooking" roof advertisement and an Age newspaper advertisement on back dash panel. Note the lining of No. 18, using the wide gold lining. The slide appears to be a copy slide, given the nature of the colour and the additional number WP413. Photographer could be Bill Pearce (WP). Printed colour postcard of the east end of Sturt St. from top of the Nichol and Allen Building in Grenville St looking west. Titled "Sturt St Ballarat" in the top left-hand corner. Has three ESCo trams in the image, at the east end of Sturt St. In the bottom left-hand corner is the number "300477" and the initials "JV" within a circle. A 2d Australian stamp, cancelled with the postmark "Burnie Tas 21Ap 34" is in the top centre of the postcard. Image taken early in the days of the Ballarat electric trams, with no windows and no rooftop destinations. Appears to be the same tram possibly three times - looking at the number on the tram in detail. On the rear of the postcard is the address to a "Mme Helen Ferrando, Sori, Genova Italy" in black handwritten ink, while in the left-hand half of the postcard, typed in light purple ink is "Arthur H. Rubock, 23 Wilmot St., Burnie, Tasmania USCE 23897" (could be US Corps of Engineers) and the postmark of "Sori Genova. / 28.5.34". The printer of the card is "The Valentine & Sons Publishing Co. Ninety six page book stapled with a heavy card cover, saddle stapled, printed on matt paper, titled "Talking Trams" and written by Jan-Werner Hente. Has a number of pages of light manila colour paper stock printed with a sepia ink. Many black and white photographs. Major Sections include: Pages 7 - 24 - text as if on a "Talking Tram" tram tour of the Bendigo Trust tram., with relevant photographs. Pages 26 - 47 - details briefly the history of each tramcar in the fleet at the time and some scrapped trams. Pages 48 - 49 - map of the route with reference points. Pages 52 - 69 - "If only all trams could talk" - the story of the trams in Bendigo and its mining history, including horse, battery, steam and electric trams, Victorian Railways impact and some of the personalities of the Bendigo Tramways. ESCo Employee Hours Work Record book that has been used by an ESCo/SEC inspector, H. P. James as a record / note book for his personal collection or papers or journal titled "In Other Days". Book sewn with string in 36 page sections, blank end papers, board covers with stipple paper out sides and Rexene cloth binding. Comprising plain paper end papers and 104 printed pages (52 leaves), with each sheet printed in black on feint ruled paper for recording the hours worked and other details of drivers and conductors employed by ESCo. Printed for daily use, with Day and date page headings - made out for the 1930's. Text generically printed feint ruled paper. Images: Book - i1 Inside front cover - i2 Members Certificate - i3 Photo of H.P. James and index page - i4 Has been used to gather mementos such as photos, articles, newspaper clippings, letters and other miscellaneous documents on Ballarat local history. Newspaper cuttings etc often have side notes written by Mr. James. Inside front cover has certificate recording Mr. James membership to the Ballarat Historical Society (on Australasian Historical Record Society paper) for 1937 - 1938. Black and white photograph contained within Reg. Item 2488, page 55, of two ESCo Depot workers at the rear of the Wendouree Parade building. Has a handwritten caption by H.P. James. Featured in the photo are Alf Coulter and Arthur Thompson. Note Item Not formally Numbered. Image btm2507i2 shows position on page relative to items 2507 to 2512. High Res Images added 15/3/2011.Handwritten in Pencil under the photograph is "I can tell a story here to my liking. This is rear of Blacksmiths shop Tram Depot, Alf Coulter and Arthur Thompson with hammer. Now in the earlier years, the smithy Horse and early electric was against the Gregory St. frontage. I wielded the 12lb hammer to assist the then blacksmith, W. McGeachan? (red hair) 1905. I was sent to the horse trams to act as a temporary conductor but I stayed for some time as conductor, track cleaner and grooms assistant."tramways, trams, esco, blacksmith, depot -

Book, H.P. James, "Out of the Past", 1940
ESCo Employee Hours Work Record book that has been used by an ESCo/SEC inspector, H. P. James as a record / note book for his personal collection or papers or journal titled "Out of the Past". Book sewn with string in 36 page sections, blank end papers, board covers with stipple paper out sides and Rexene cloth binding. Comprising plain paper end papers and 104 printed pages (52 leaves), with each sheet printed in black on feint ruled paper for recording the hours worked and other details of drivers and conductors employed by ESCo. Printed for daily use, with Day and date page headings - made out for the 1930's. Images: Book - i1 Inside front cover - i2 Members Certificate - i3 Has been used to gather mementos such as photos, articles, newspaper clippings, letters and other miscellaneous documents on Ballarat local history. Newspaper cuttings etc often have side notes written by Mr. James. Inside front cover has certificate recording Mr. James membership to the Ballarat Historical Society for 1940. Receipt signed by Edward Crimmins. Also a newspaper cutting on the cost of pensions to Lord Nelson's family. On facing page a photo of Queen Elizabeth, a printer colour cover or sheet about Walt Disney's "Pinocchio", a newspaper cutting regarding Father's Day and a black and white photograph of a young girl in a hospital carriage being pushed by a man. Pages numbered odd numbers only in the top right hand corner in pencil. Primary items are: 1 - Coloured cover to a writing tablet, titled "Australian Birds". Underlying this on the back of the writing tablet is two newspaper cuttings: the Ballarat Historical Society - reports on the 6th Annual meeting of the Society. 3 - Photo of the pattern Ballaarat Horse Tram company tram outside the Duncan and Fraser's Carriage Works in Adelaide with hand written notes underneath, including a sketch of a horse tram drivers seat - see Reg. Item 2527. 4, 6 - Group of nine black and white printed cards (15 illustrations) of early Ballarat pasted onto the sheet - see Reg. Item 2528. 5, 7 & 9 - Printed notes titled "Valedictory to Bob Haines" - see Reg. Item 2529. Manual, Bell Punch Co, "The Automaticket Bell Punch System of Fare Collection and Control", c1935
Yields information about the method that the State Electricity Commission of Vic undertook interviews for staff appointments. Gave advice of the era for such interviews and objectives of the interview.Thirty page book printed on heavy light brown paper, stapled with an folded card cover titled "The Automaticket Bell Punch System of Fare Collection and Control". Describes the Automaticket system, has samples of traffic tickets pasted in the book, diagrams, drawings, gives details of the components and method of operation in particular ticket inspection, ticket and checking back office functions. Published by the Bell Punch Company of London early to mid 1930's? Cover and each page headed "Confidential Information for Executives". Has a photo of South Western Roadlines double deck bus with a conductor. See also Reg. Item 3629 for another version of the pamphlet for this machine. In the rear cover of the book, folded and stapled to give a pocket, are listed three forms that would have been provided with the book - not with the collected copy. -However in the pocket were eleven 11 "Ticket Issue Machine" or "TIM" tickets - eg City of South Melbourne library fine, packing slips, sample meal tickets, Army canteen beer tickets, and sample bus tickets - including one pinned to a business card - John Bolland of Eastern Suburbs Omnibus Service who were the agents for the TIM machines. (image btm3645i3) Card has date of "4-1-50". Also three sample Bell punch tickets and one ultimate machine ticket - two 1d tickets. As well at the time of acquisition were a SEC Special Pass - to Reg Item 3648 and a SEC Staff Pass ticket - to Reg item 3649. Ephemera - Ticket, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), SEC Provincial Tramways "Staff Ticket", mid 1930's
Demonstrates aspects of the SEC ticketing, governance and monitoring systems. The Pass or ticket could be issued to a SEC staff member to enable travel on the tramways while on business. Style remained very similar to the end of the tramways.SEC Provincial Tramways "Staff Ticket" No. Aa000448. Printed on heavy dark brown paper with black printing. Ticket good for single trip only, of use by employees when travelling on Commission's business. Form No. TYE-2-19. Not known when printed, possibly 1960's maybe earlier. Has been cancelled by "X"d in ink and removed from a 1930's ticket manual or similar document as it has paper on the rear of the ticket covering the conditions of use - see also Reg Item 3648 for the same paper backing.Has been "X" in inktrams, tramways, tickets, staff tickets, employees pass -

Pamphlet, Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society (BTPS), "Don't forget what a tram looks like!", early 1970's
Yields information about early publicity methods and pamphlets of the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society and the spelling of Ballarat with double a's, which was not adopted by the BTPS organisation.Green sheet printed as an early pamphlet for the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society, titled "Don't forget what a tram looks like!" Printed soon after Society established. Gives address of BTPS. Note highly distributed due to the spelling of the word "Ballarat" with two "a's" - Ballaarat. Has a sketch of a bogie tram on the pamphlet. Was used as note paper in the depot for many years. Object 3656 was found with item 3655 - possibly recording who donated item 3655 originally - C. H. Yields information about the tram timetables applicable to Melbourne's trams, including cable and electric and demonstrates the spread of Melbourne's public transport system in the early 1920's.Forty Eight page printed book contained with oversize green heavy paper covers centre stapled with a coloured map glued into the rear cover of the book titled "OSBA Tram Time Tables with Railway and Tramway Map, of Melbourne and Suburbs". Published c1920 - shows Footscray system, Victoria St Flemington link, does not show Puckle St. Timetables details Fares, first and last cars for cable and electric lines, sections and other details of the various lines. Note page 44 and 45 cannot be accessed, paper not cut correctly during the printing process - leave as is. Map prepared by Gawler and Drummond Architects, shows in colour the cable routes, electric tramways, authorised tramways and railway lines. Municipalities shown in different colours. Map folded into 12 sections. Published by Osboldstone & Co Pty Ltd, Printers and Publishers, Temple Court Place, Melbourne. Price 6d.
