Clothing - Dress, Day dress, circa 1855-1872
This dress was donated as having belonged to Annie Elizabeth McLean, who worked as a maid to the daughters of Samuel Renwick of Caulfield. Annie was born in Argyllshire, Scotland in 1853. This dress appears to have been originally made circa 1855 and then modified circa 1872. As Annie would only have been two years old in 1855, this indicates that the dress would most probably have been originally made for someone else and later acquired by Annie. Annie Elizabeth McLean arrived in the Colony of Victoria from Argyllshire, Scotland with her aunts and cousins in 1867, aged thirteen and a half. She had been educated in Scotland and eventually became a personal maid and then companion to the Renwick girl, daughters of Samuel Renwick of Caulfield, Victoria. The Renwicks' home, 'The Garrell' on Glen Eira Road, was one of Caulfield's earliest residences, having been built around 1854. Samuel was a business partner of William Kerr Thomson, a well-known Brighton resident and the original occupant of the North Road mansion 'Kamesburgh'. During her time with the Renwick family, Annie travelled with them to England, then to Scotland, then back to Victoria. She left the family upon the marriage of the youngest Renwick daughter, then went to the household of Sir William and Lady McCullough until she left to be married to Alfred John Ashfold in 1878.This c1872 grey and white silk pin stripe dress features a high round neckline with eleven decorative blue silk buttons and secured by a concealed line of fifteen hook and eyelet closure. The bodice (.1) has decorative blue and green braid over the shoulder and bust and across the base of the bodice. The dress features three darts shaping the dress to the body. The sleeve is cut high but relatively full and tapers to the elbow then flares again in Pagoda like style but ends at the wrist or hand. The skirt (.2) opens over the left hip and features a pocket over the right hip. The skirt at the front finishes at the ankle or just above the ground. At the back the bodice features panels shaping the dress into the body and pleated and flared from the waist. At the small of the back is a decorative bow with pinked edges and decorative braid. The skirt at the back is uncommon in shape most likely as the result of modification. It appears to have had panels removed reducing its original fullness. It has a tape inside the back of the skirt that would draw the skirt in creating a bustle like shape . It would appear that the dress had been modified in order to create a more fashionable silhouette most probably in circa 1872. There are three separate pieces of fabric. One is made up into a semi-circular over-skirt trimmed with blue braid and fringing (.3). Two pieces are unpicked skirt gores, one still has its cotton lining attached (.4 and .5).annie elizabeth mclean, samuel renwick, the garrell, caulfield -

Postcard, Like the boomerang may you quickly come back, c1917
Sometimes called a sweetheart postcard, it was a way of sending thoughts to the troops overseas. The printing on the rear implies it was sent with a hamper to the troops overseas. The text and poem on the front says : 'Like the boomerang may you quickly come back. / To wish you a Speedy, Safe and Sure Return. This hamper is sent you with greetings sincere, And the hope that its contents will bring you "good cheer"; While you're doing your bit, we are thinking of you And we'll welcome you home when you've seen the job through, In the meantime just send us a message to say You've received this all right if you find it OK.' Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920.A record of correspondence with the troops in World War 1 and sending good wishes with a hamper. Postcard, Postcards of Egypt
Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling either during World War 1, or just after, or while returning to Australia. These postcard scenes include the Sphinx, the Pyramids, Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez including mosques and marketplaces. The Suez Canal was used by troop ships, so this was often the first time soldiers from Australia saw Egyptians. Many troops in World War 1 were stationed first in Egypt (including near Cairo) to train before heading to Gallipoli, Turkey or on to the Western Front. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs (none of these have been written on or posted). He also had a vesta (match) case from Belfast, so it is likely he visited there. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). Award, Commemorative Trophy : Kew Bowling Club Season 1885-86, 1968
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. Reeve S 2012, City of Boroondara: Thematic Environmental History, p.216.The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Trophy commemorating the Kew Bowling Club's season 1885-86. 45 R.P.M. Record, A Silver Star, 1975
This item was made by Crest Records, a Melbourne company established by Marcus Herman that recorded pop, jazz, folk, liturgical and other music from the early 1960s to the mid 1970s. The music and words of ‘A Silver Star’ were by Glorie Attrill nee McLean(1911-1998) who was born in Glenormiston, Victoria. She lived and farmed for some years at The Sisters and in her later years lived at Terang. She wrote several songs, with ‘A Silver Star’ being her best-loved composition. Her two autobiographical booklets are ‘Sunset Serenade’ and ‘At Twilight’. John McSwain was the son of an acquaintance in her childhood days. This record is of interest as the one of the songs was written by a local woman, Glorie Attrill and the disc was recorded in Warrnambool in the 1970s.This is a circular 45 R.P.M. black disc with silver-coloured printing in the centre. The cove has a black and white photograph of the singer on the front with white and blue printing, an image of a star and the logo of the recording company. There are also two pink labels from the retail shop where the record was purchased. Melbourne Legacy wished to mark the friendship and goodwill by the members and management of Huntingdale Golf Club as far back as 1933, by presenting a Lone Pine sapling to Huntingdale Golf Club in 1992. L/- G. M. Swan (President 1992) is on the far right. A similar photo was featured in the Widows' Newsletter in July 1992. The men in yellow blazers are Huntingdale Golf Club's captain, Tony Reidy, President, Len Rainer and past president Douglas McLean. The man in grey is unknown but could be Legatee Frank Doolan.A record of Lone Pine tree being planted at Huntingdale Golf Club.Colour photo of President Swan unveiling a Lone Pine sapling with a Legacy flag.tree planting, lone pine, huntingdale golf club -
