The North Warrnambool Rifle Club was operating in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It had 132 members in 1935. A noted member was the well-known local photographer, Arthur Jordan whose father, Joseph, was a crack rifle shot and was a member of the Warrnambool Rifle Club. The Barber Centenary Cup was presumably established to commemorate the Centenary of Victoria as the cup competitions commenced in 1934 and were completed in 1935. The competitions were usually held over distances of 300, 500 and 600 yards. It is not known which member of the several Barber families in Warrnambool at the time donated the cup but G. Barber was a member of the Rifle Club in 1934-5 and winner of the Gray Centenary Cup. W. D. McDonald, the winner of the trophy, was the Captain of the C lub in 1935.This item is significant as it is connected with early 20th century Warrnambool sport (rifle shooting). It shows what sort of award was given for competition winners and reveals the popularity of rifle shooting in Warrnambool in earlier decades, with two clubs existing at that timeThis is a sports trophy cup made of electro-plated nickel silver (now very tarnished). The Hutton Trophy or Shield was awarded annually to the best Light Horse Troop in Australia. The trophy is now held at the Armoured Centre Puckapunyal. Inter-regimental competition was strong in the years between WWI and WWII. Annually, the best troop in the regiments of the 3rd (Vic), 4th (SA), 5th (WA) and 6th (Tas) Military Districts competed for the Hutton Trophy and the Lord Forster Cup. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion and deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. The regiment was disbanded at the end of the war, 1945. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse unit to serve overseas in WWII.No 1 Troop C Squadron 20th Light Horse Regiment drawn from the farming community of Tocumwal, personified the strength of citizen soldiering in rural Victorian and Southern NSW in the period following World War One and especially in the years immediately prior to the second World War. Trophy was won at the Geelong Fire Brigade Jubilee in 1904. This would have been a demonstartion to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Geelong brigade which formed in 1854 Silver shield mounted on a wooden backing board. Trophy was won by Ballarat Fire Brigade at the Geelong Fire Brigade Jubilee in 1904. Trophy was donated by Llyods of London and presented by E. Steane Price esq. Trophy has a Lion at the top centre, angels on both the left and right sides. In the centre there is a depection of 2 large multi storey buildings. The building in the front of the picture has a carraige ladder raised up against it with 2 firemen climbing the ladder. There are 2 additional firemen either side of the ladder and an additional fireman in front of standing in front of with another standing on top of what appears to be either a mannual pump or possibly the ladders appliance. There are various other branches, leaves etc. that make up the remainder of the decorations on the sheild. In 2000, three silver trophy spoons were donated to the Kew Historical Society by the National Trust (Victoria). At the time, the trophies were believed to have been awarded to J.S. Penrose for victories in events held by the Boroondara R.C. [Rifle Club] in 1905 and 1906. The Boroondara Rifle Club was a separate entity to the Kew and Hawthorn Rifle Clubs. The first reference to the Club on Trove is on 11 April 1900, when the Club was established and the committee elected. It is recorded that: “the adjourned meeting in connection with the Boroondara Rifle Club was held in the shire hall on Monday evening; Mr. A. J. Smith, J.P., in the chair. It was decided that the name of the club should be the Boroondara Rifle Club, and that it should embrace the whole shire, with butts at some convenient and accessible spot. A number of additional members were sworn in, making the total enrolled to date about 70. The following gentlemen were elected as office bearers: — President, Sir Frederick Sargood. M.L.C.: vice-presidents, Messrs. Wm. Knox, M.L.C.; F. Madden, M.L.A., and A. J. Smith (president of the shire); hon. captain, Mr. John Mc Whae (chairman of the Stock Exchange) ; committee. Messrs. T. In 1937 the Moffitt family lived at 8 Rosemont Street, Surrey Hills, having lived in Station Street, Box Hill prior to Surrey Hills. Mr Frank Moffitt was a green keeper. Sculptor John Kendrick Blogg of Albany Crescent, a member of the Surrey Hills Bowling Club, carved many such trophies which included eucalypt leaves and presented them to the Surrey Hills Bowling Club as trophies. Robert Keys,1818-87 b.Ireland, arrived Australia 1841 and joined parents on a farm in Brighton.Victoria. 1870 he commenced his own 15 acre 'fruit garden' in Keys Rd Moorabbin and in 1881-82 was awarded the 'Leader Cup', by the Leader Newspaper, as the Winner of the Brighton Horticultural Society 'Best Fruit Garden' competition. Robert Keys, early settler 1841, was a talented orchardist , Brighton Councillor 1860 and Moorabbin City Coucillor until his death 1887. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. The Marshwood Challenge Trophy was first awarded in 1974. This valuable trophy was donated by Major Maurice Charles Cox and his wife Betty, who were devoted to the Shetland Pony. Why is it called Marshwood? The Coxes both worked to maintain high standards of the Shetland breed. They did this in Great Britain by starting The Marshwood Stud in 1922. They also both took on the role of president of the Shetland Pony Major Stud Book Society and started a scheme to use only the best stallions for breeding. Major Cox and Australia The Coxes promoted the Shetland pony elsewhere too. Major Cox judged Shetland ponies at shows in Australia, Sweden and France. He probably last judged in Australia at the Sydney Easter Show in 1981. By this time Major Cox must have been in his late 70s as he was a reserve cavalry man in 1918. The silver-footed salver trophy was made in Scotland in 1916. It is possible that Major Cox brought it with him to Australia when he was judging Shetland ponies at the Royal Melbourne Show in the 1970s. The Marshwood Challenge Cup was awarded for the best Shetland pony at the show. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The left plaque records information about the event held in Corowa. The right plaque records the names of the team members who defeated Kangaroo Flat 74/73. The central plaques record that the 'jack' in the centre of the trophy was the actual one used in the winning shot in Ray Jansen's rink .
