... trams Tram 610 South Melbourne Depot Y1 class Black and White ...Photo shows the first build of the upgraded Y class design classified Y1 Class 610. Four of these Trams were built in the MMTB Preston Workshops in 1930, 610 to 613. There was one solitary Y Class tram 469. They were built with the intention of evaluating one-man operation. Due to their higher cost and Union resentment, the MMTB resorted to the proven W Class tram design. All Y and Y1 classes were withdrawn from regular passenger service in 1965 and transferred to the Driver training school at Hawthorn Depot. All cars are preserved in various museums in Australia. Photos show W class 304 after delivery from Adelaide being unloaded by the travelling yard crane. The tram was built in Adelaide by the Holden Bodyworks and completed at the Workshops. The tram entered service on 14-8-1924. It was converted to a W2 class tram in Dec. 1932. The second photo shows the tram being loaded onto a horse-drawn jinker. Photograph - Derailment of MMTB N Class tram 121 at Riversdale Road level Crossing, Herald Sun, 8-9-1928
Newspaper photograph - from the Melbourne Herald Sun Pictorial newspaper - 8/ 9/1928 about the derailment after running through the catch points of a maximum traction tramcar at the Riversdale Road level crossing the previous day 7/9/1928. The front bogie or truck has been torn from underneath the tramcar. A check with The Sun microfilm at the State Library shows the paper was published on 8/9/1928. Refer Item 1781. Note that the catch point on the down track has opened which caused the tram heading east to derail. Catch points were installed at tram tracks at rail crossings to deliberately derail a runaway tram when a train is approaching or is on the crossing. Occasionally the catch point does not close after the train has passed. Photo shows one of the Maximum Traction Bogies trams built for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1917-1918. Photographed in the Hawthorn Depot some time before May 1925. This tram began its life as HTT No. 30. The body was sold in 1944. One of the earliest electric trams in Victoria. This open tram design was commonly known as 'toast rack'. One is preserved , MMTB V Class 214, and resides at Hawthorn Tram Museum.
