The current site of the Kew Recreation Centre in High Street Kew previously housed the Kew Depot on the corner of Disraeli Street. In nearby Derby Street, a number of original Victorian era buildings were gradually replaced due to development of the Baths precinct and commercial development.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. Small single fronted cottage in Derby Street, Kew. In the early 19th century, infant baptismal gowns worn by male and female infants began to be modelled on dresses worn by adult women. Gowns were typically made of fine white linen or cotton, and often trimmed with tucks, lace, whitework embroidery, and other handwork. The Kew Historical Society's collection includes over fifteen christening gowns dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.A mid-nineteenth century christening (baptismal) gown, constructed of sturdy white cotton featuring a long skirt, high neck and long sleeves. Pamphlet commissioned by Council to promote and call for resident's comments on the Caulfield City Council's proposed Civic Centre by the 28th May 1976.Cream colour paper pamplet folded to create 4 panels with text and images printed in blue and orange ink on recto and verso of the four panels. The house was one of Sunbury's older houses and was on the corner of Horne and Neill Streets. Before it was demolished for larger commercial development, the property was a medical centre and later an employment and training office. The wheat silo was erected on railway land on the west side of the railway line at Sunbury from approx 1970s - 1980s. It served as a grain storage provision for the local cereal farmers.The former CFA depot which was in Evans Street. In 1992 the children from the Bulla Primary School had an excursion to Woodlands Park for a Colonial Day where they were introduced to old crafts and skills. The post card is one of a set of commercial cards produced for Sunbury. Each card featured particular buildings or places of interest in the town. This card included Ben Eadie winery, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, the former old mill by Jacksons Creek and the railway viaduct and bridge at Rupertswood. The open are in the foreground was part of railway land on the west side of Sunbury Station along Horne Street. The initial preparations to develop the area into a commercial and entertainment precinct were just commencing. In 2000 work commenced on the further development of railway land on the west side of Sunbury station for the construction of commercial and entertainment facilities. Prior to this time the land had been undeveloped and was often used to accommodate visiting circus troupes. Cereal storage silos also occupied this area for some time. The photograph shows a picture of Evans Street Sunbury taken from the T intersection at Macedon Street and looking south. When the photograph was taken it was one of Sunbury's main residential areas. Since the 1980s the houses in the image have been demolished and replaced with commercial development. Dust coat worn by Mr Frederick Alister Jennings when he managed a family grocery store circa 1948 at 510 Point Nepean Road, East Brighton. Frederick was born at Nagambie, Victoria in 1909 and died in Brighton in 1979. He was the son of Hugh Edwin Jennings and Alice Constance Warren. He married Margaret Jean Hughes in 1934 and served in the Second World War. He lived at 1 Valda Grove Brighton. Frederick was a commercial traveller as well as his time spent managing the store in Point Nepean Road. It is believed this coat dates from his time at the store c1948 - 1955. The store was owned for many years by his father-in-law W. G. Hughes and was one of a group of shops near the corner of Centre Road. In 1944-45 the group of shops included Fletcher’s fuel merchants, a haberdasher, butcher, fruiterer, grocer, Brighton East post office, a ladies’ hairdresser and Hughes’ grocer. In 1950 Hughes’ grocery store was between a service station and the Commercial Bank on what had been renamed Nepean Highway. The business was sold to G. S.
