This type of ration tin was issued during the latter part of the Second World War. These rations were issued to every soldier involved in operations and were only to be opened if no other source of food was available.An unopened olive drab Australian Military Forces (AMF) Emergency Ration Tin. There are instructions printed in black ink on the inside surface of the lid. This should read 'INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE / To be consumed as found. / 1. Sydney Smith (1771-1845) was an English writer and a Reverend of the Anglican Church. He founded the Edinburgh Review, an intellectual and cultural magazine. The Reverend Sydney Smith wrote this book about his works. The book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection, a large group of books and records, some of which are rare and valuable. The collection was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, which was founded in 1853 and is named after Warrnambool's Public Librarian, Ralph Pattison. The book is of interest as it has the conditions of borrowing a book from the Mechanic's Institute pasted onto the front cover, including the cost of a Quarterly Subscription, written by Secretary Geo. D. Alston. Thomas Longman founded his publishing firm in 1724 in London by the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, including Longman, Green, Reader and Dyer (1865-1880), the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. This copper and tin container was used for the storage and transport of cordite that replaced black powder in 1889 as a military propellant. The stamped of a government broad arrow and date 1903 show the item was made for the war department and not for commercial use. The container once empty of explosives was used for many years as a flour bin on board the crayfish ketch "Lady Brassey" by Mr Charlie Washbourne, Crib Point, Australia (on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria). The ketch Lady Brassey was probably named after Anna or "Annie" Brassey (née Allnutt), Baroness Brassey (7 October 1839 – 14 September 1887) who was an English traveller and writer. Her bestselling book A Voyage in the Sunbeam, Our Home on the Ocean for Eleven Months (1878) describes a voyage around the world including a visit to Australia.The explosives container is an example of how explosive compounds were stored and transported at the turn of the 20th century. It is significate as it is in very good condition and an artefact from Australia's colonial history around the Federation, just as the country was gaining independence from Britain.Metal box with tin sides, copper top and base and round, double layered lid that has a folding, D shaped handle. Referred to as a cordite container or copper drum. Inscriptions are stamped onto the drum and are on a sticker under the lid.Handle stamped "S & Co. 1900" on lid. This sepia coloured photograph show the image of the former Bank of Australasia in Warrnambool. The two-storey building was built for the bank on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets and opened there for business in 1860. It is now one of the City's Historic Buildings. The Bank of Australasia was incorporated by Royal Charter of England in March 1834. It came to Australia on 14th December 1835, opening in Sydney. The Acting Superintendent of the Bank of Australasia in Sydney at that time was David Charters McArthur. He was Superintendent from 1867-to 1876. The Melbourne branch of the Bank of Australasia opened on 28th August 1838 in a two-roomed brick cottage on the north side of Little Collins Street. Two huge mastiff dogs were kept in the backyard and let loose at night to guard the bank. The government also provided an armed military sentinel. Due to the bank's rapid growth, a new building for the Melbourne branch was opened in 1840 at 75 Collins Street West. By 1879 the bank had been upgraded to a magnificent two-storey building on the corners of Collins and Queens Streets, with the entry on Collins Street. In 1951 the Bank of Australasia amalgamated with the Union Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank, now known as the ANZ. Then in 1970, the ANZ merged with both the ES&A and the London Bank of Australia to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The ANZ Banking Group Ltd kindly donated a variety of historic items from the Bank of Australasia. BANK of AUSTRALASIA, WARRNAMBOOL – In 1854 Warrnambool had two banks, the Union Back and the Bank of Australasia. Later, completely different bank businesses opened; in 1867 the National Bank of Australasia, then in 1875 the Colonial Bank of Australasia. The original Warrnambool branch of the Bank of Australasia was established in July 1854, and operated from a leased cottage on Merri Street, close to Liebig Street. The bank later bought a stone building previously erected by drapers Cramond & Dickson on the corner of Timor and Gibson Streets. Samuel Hannaford was a teller and then Manager at the Warrnambool branch from 1855 to 1856 and the Warrnambool Council chose that bank for its dealings during 1856-57. In 1859 Roberts & Co. was awarded the contract to build the new Bank of Australasia branch for the sum of £3,000. The land was on a sand hill on the northeast corner of Timor and Kepler Streets and had been bought in 1855 from investor James Cust. The new building opened on May 21, 1860. The bank continued to operate there until 1951 when it merged with the Union Bank to form the ANZ Bank, which continued operating from its Liebig Street building. Warrnambool City Council purchased the former Bank of Australasia building in 1971 and renovated it, then on 3rd December 1973 it was officially opened as the Art Gallery by Cr. Harold Stephenson and Gallery Director John Welsh. The Gallery transferred to the purpose-built building in Liebig Street in 1986 and the old bank building is now the Gallery club. Staff at the Bank of Australasia in Warrnambool included the following men but others were also involved: Samuel Hannaford, Teller then Manager from 1855-1856; W H Palmer, Manager from January 1857 until November 1869 when the Teller Basil Spence was promoted to Manager; H B Chomley, Manager from April 1873 and still there in 1886; A Butt, Manager in 1895-1904; J R McCleary Accountant and Acting Manager for 12 months, until 1900; A Kirk, Manager 1904; J Moore, staff until his transfer to Bendigo in December 1908; J S Bath was Manager until 1915; C C Cox, Manager until April 1923; Richard C Stanley, Manager 1923 to April 1928. The photograph is significant historically for its connection with the Bank of Australasia. The early Australian bank was established in 1834 by Royal Charter and opened in Sydney, Australia, in Sydney in 1835. The bank had many Australian offices in November 1877, particularly on the east and south coasts. Victoria had 45 percent of all Offices. The photograph has local historical significance for its association with the Warrnambool Bank of Australasia, which was established early in Warrnambool's history. It was Warrnambool Council’s first bank. The bank continued to operate until the organisation's merger in 1951 when it became the ANZ Bank Group of today. This textbook was written for engineering students by Scottish Professor, William J Goudie, D. Sc., (1868-1945). He was a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, James Watt Chair of Mechanical Engineering, University of Glasgow, and Professor of "The Theory and practice of Heat Engines" in the University of Glasgow. He wrote several papers and books on the topics of mechanical speed and power. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co., was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The first practical steam turbine was built in 1884 by Charles Parsons and this became the beginning of generating electricity and powering large ships. The author of Steam Turbines, Professor William John Couldie D. Sc, was a mechanical engineer who had practical experience in a marine consulting engineering service and lectured in the theory and practice of mechanical engineering.This book is an example of the development of technology that contributed to the evolution of steam turbines. The book is also significant for its connection to the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more.Steam Turbines, by William J. The Circuit was built in the 1950's and opened in 1956. The circuit was closed in 1962 due to lack of finance for repair work to the track. In 1964 Len Lukey purchased the cirtuit and reopened in 1967, but once again was closed in 1978 as not suitable for modern racing. It was used only for Historic Rallies and the like until 1982. In 1985 The Circuit was purchsed by Placetac Pty Ltd. The Circuit was refurbished in 1988. The Clarke twins, Jimmy and Jack, were born at San Remo on the 15/5/1887. Parents were Captain George and Mrs Clarke. George Clarke died 1904. Ada & Joe Walton were born at Newhaven, Phillip Island a day after the Clarke boys. The midwife, Mrs Findlay, attended both births. Ada Walton married Norm Churchill of Kilcunda. they had a son, Joe. Joe Walton and wife had two sons, Brian & Arnie. Joe became a builder and lived all his life on the Island.
