Uniform - Hamilton-Smith Collection - Red Cross Uniform
The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies and the Belvoir Wodonga Rotary Club. Grace was an active member of several organisations including the CWA, Red Cross, the Wodonga Show Ladies' Auxiliary and the Victorian Agricultural Societies Association. This uniform was owned by Grace Hamilton-Smith. She achieved recognition for more 20 years of service to the Red Cross.This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It is part of a significant collection from the Hamilton-Smith family of Wodonga and reflects important aspects of social history including the roles of women and their contribution to the community. Orbost & District Historical Society
rocking chair, mid 19th century
Brought from Skye, Scotland, in 1850's by Malcolm McLeod, an early Orbost pioneer, and donated by his granddaughter, Margaret McLeod. The tapestry was worked by Miss Grace Cameron. This was possibly a repair job done when acquired by the donor. Grace Cameron was the daughter of John Cameron who selected the first land on the Snowy River flats. The McLeods and Camerons were early Orbost pioneers. This postcard seems to have been written by Grace Cameron to Annie (Cameron) Gilbert. There is mention of a harvest festival.The Cameron and Gilbert families are early settlers of the Orbost area. This book of poetry was written by war poet, Violet Bertha Cramer. It is a record of an Australian civilian woman’s perspective on war. The initials are G. K. Cameron, for Grace Kerr Cameron - Grace Charlotte Kerr Cameron. She was the twin daughter of James Cameron and Jane (Jean) Moffat. Her twin sister was Agnes Helen (Nell) Cameron, and her one brother was Harry Purchase Cameron (Roma Smith's father). Another brother Archibald Peter CAMERON, died aged 7. There is a family photo of Mrs Jane Cameron and the twins in the garden of the family home "Carinya". Grace and Nell lived in the family home following the death of their parents. Grace and Nell both died in 1940, then Roma and Ron SMITH lived at "Carinya" after their marriage in 1944. Lorraine and Peter COULTON's home is now on the site. (information from John Phillips and Margaret Smith). There was a lot of material written by Australian civilian women during the First World War. Violet B. Cramer was one poet who contributed to a valuable record of Australian civilian women’s perspectives on war. A small book with a buff coloured cover, titled Memories of the Great War written by Violet B. Cramer. Print is black. The book contains poetry on WW1.on front cover - G.K. Grace visited the Eastern Oval in the 1870s considering it the most English ground in Australia. The W.G. Grace Tree is located at the end of the historic grandstand.
