The Hanro company was established in Switzerland in 1884. In 1926 a site in Hargreaves Street Bendigo, behind the School of Mines, was purchased to establish the Bendigo Knitting Mills, a subsidiary of Hanro. The managing director was Charles Handerchin who came from Switzerland. The company was delisted from the Australian Stock Exchange in 1963 when it was taken over by John Brown Industries.Hanro Autumn - Winter Catalogue 1961: The front cover is of a white and pink card background is a sketch in black ink of a lady wearing a matching night dress and dressing gown. On the back of the catalogue on pink and white card is a scene of pink sky with white clouds, sketched in black ink is the Swiss Alps with a Swiss Chalet, trees, flowers and a cow. Negative of tram 219 at a tram stop. Tram has destination City and Route No 7. Photo looks staged as a school child in uniform leaning at door, driver and passenger in front window are all staring at the photographer. Note the tram has a trolley wheel fitted, the stop is a compulsory stop and that there is a light fitting above the tram with a tinted glass shield that indicated the type of stops at night. Photograph shows single track section of tramway in Nicholson St, East Coburg looking south from Harding St. The rails are slightly sunken into bitumen covered roadway. Primary school grounds are at left, children's crossing in foreground with accompanying red and white bands painted on span poles and several motor vehicles are in the background. The models of motor vehicles and the future duplication of this track in late 1966 suggest the photograph's date of mid-1960s. This single track was the scene of many head-on collisions between south bound trams and northbound motor vehicles, especially at night.Yields information about remaining single track sections that were slow to be duplicated due to lack of funding. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press".
