Transmission Assembly, Ferret Scout Car, Daimler, c 1950
The Ferret Scout Car , was developed by the British Army in the late 1940s and came into production in the 1950s. The Ferret first saw service in the British Army in 1952, and a little later in Australia. There were many series and Marks of the Ferret. In Australia two were primarily used. The Mark1, which had no turret and a crew of three, and the Mark2, with a turret and a crew of two. The Australian Army used the Ferrets as scout cars until the 1960s, they were disposed of by public auction in the early 1970s. The Ferret is a light armoured car, intended for light reconnaissance work, they are very mobile and were well suited to their role. The vehicle was designed by Daimler, as a further development on the successful Daimler Dingo of WW2. The Ferret is fully armoured and the standard model of the Ferret Mk2 was further strengthened shortly after its design and became the Mk2/3 (this is the usual model referred as the Mk2). The motor was Roll Royce B60 motor, giving the vehicle a power to weight ratio of 29.35 break horse power per tonne, the vehicle weighs 3.6 tonnes, although a combat weight would be 4.3 tonnes. It is four wheel drive, constant, and has a top speed of 93 k.p.h. (approx 50 m.p.h.). Fuel consumption is only about 34 litres per kilometer. The Ferret is 3.8 metres long by 1.9 metres wide and is 1.9 metres high, not including radio aerials. The ground clearance is .33 of a metre and the track width is 1.5 metres.Ferret Scout Car - B60 No 1 Mk 6A transmission assembly incorporating engine, fluid coupling, gear box and transfer box.Engine Number 12993 List Number 35418 Modification plate marked to Mod 3. ferret scout car, transmission -

Surveyors Chain - Steel Band
A chain is a unit of length equal to 66 feet or 22 yards. This is a statute measure in the United Kingdom. One link is 100th part of a chain, which is 7.92 inches (20.1 cm). The chain and link became standard surveyors' units of length and crossed to the colonies from the United Kingdom. The chain is the unit of linear measurement for the survey of the public lands as prescribed by law. In Australia most building lots in the past were a quarter of an acre, measuring one chain by two and a half chains. Also street frontages, roads, laneways. The chain also survives as the length of a cricket pitch, being the distance between the stumps. Surveyors and residents of the Kiewa Valley used the Steel Band Surveyors Chain to measure distances when developing the land.Surveyors' steel band measuring tape, known as a 'standard band', or a 'steel band chain'.This chain consists of a long narrow strip of steel of uniform width of 3 mm and thickness of 0.3 to 0.6 mm. The chain itself is between 20 m and 30 m long.surveyors, surveyors chain, measurement of distance -

Book - Reference Teaching, Intermediate English J. Aughterson, Circa 1957
This particular edition was published in a period (1950s), when textbooks for primary and secondary schools were published by London based publishing houses such as LONGMAN. This particular publishing house brand is now only used by the Longman Schools in China. This reference book was one of the basic reading material for students learning the "English" language opposed to the "Americanised English". The two versions of English now in use are mainly influenced by the greater influx of American based media and the internet. At the time of this publication however print media was at its peak and the English used was from the United Kingdom. Although the written language is in English, the majority subject matter is of Australian origin. This text book is very significant in demonstrating the type of English taught in rural schools during the period and before the internet and the American based spell check programs now in use. The subtle changes in both the spoken and written English, due to the modern internet facilities, can be seen by the "texting" language of school aged students, post "world wide web" and mobile telephones. This English text book is a moment in time, when the isolation of rural communities had greater affect upon the standard of both the written and spoken language. It was a time when Britain was still thought of as "the mother land" and the English used was that brought to Australian by the original settlers and over time developed an "Australian flavour".Plastic covered soft green colored cardboard cover in black print. Pages (150) are printed in black ink on both sides and in different fonts.Front cover "INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH" underneath "J. Pipe Tobacco Smoking, Circa 1889
Pipe smoking has been in vogue for centuries, and in Australia it was a symbol of the "discerning smoker" such as the landed gentry or men of professional status. This pipe, of the Standard Canadian style, would have emigrated to Australia with its owner, a reasonable young professional or executive of the Hudson Bay Tobacco Company in the late 1800s or early 1900s. It is the type of pipe well suited to a harsh rural backdrop and with its owner found the Kiewa Valley a more relaxed environment than the Canadian Indian locations. The value of this pipe to the original owner, who would have sealed many trade contracts during the Canadian Indian smoke rituals In the late 1800s, is indicated by the long voyage to Australia and the Kiewa Valley. However with the health related restrictions placed on public smoking in the early 2000s, these tobacco pipes were not immune from the legislation, and even though the pipe smoke was not as offensive as cigarette smoke it still came under the umbrella of smoking. Pipes were also used in the process of inhaling illicit drugs i.e. marijuana, but this use was limited to a very few and not with this pipe. Smoking in the second millennium is being phased out as a social habit in Australia but may affect the few "private" smoker and has, as the United States prohibition era (alcoholic drinks) did, spawn an illicit trade in cheap contraband tobacco. Pipes such as this item show that smoking was not only part of the lifestyle of the era but also that it was part of a ritual (especially to the Indians of the Canada Hudson Bay region) that sealed a brotherhood not only socially but also politically and economically. This type of pipe lends itself well to the rural setting of the Kiewa Valley and although it is a very exclusive pipe it blended into the tobacco industrial environment of the Kiewa Valley and its surrounding districts. The Kiewa Valley region was up until the late 1900s part of the Australian Tobacco industry and the levels of men smoking pipes was enhanced by the readily supply, "off the fields", of tobacco leaves and the attitude to city based smoking restrictions was one of resentment. This pipe has a straight shank and stem and its style is 'standard Canadian'. The pipe has a permanent filter and a stainless steel band with the initials of the Hudson Bay Tobacco Company and its seals stamped on it.. The bowl and shank are one piece of appropriate shaped wood. The bit and bore are made from bakelite (dark brown in colour). The pipe is fashioned in the form of the clay pipes used by trappers, in the late 1800s early 1900s. It has a "rest" lug at the bottom of the bowl similar to clay pipes. This pipe has its own pipe case with wood reinforcement running the entire pipe shaped contour. On the stainless steel at the mortise and tenon junction is stamped "HP" and below that are stamped symbols of a ship's anchor, a lion and a tobacco leaf.tobacco, pipe smoking, smoking accessories -

Book, Price warung - Barry Anderews, 1976
This is a biography of Price Warung by Barry Andrews. Price Warung (1854-1911), whose real name was William Astley, has a place in Australia’s history as a journalist, writer and campaigner for Federation. He worked for a great number of newspapers throughout Australia and began an association with the Sydney ‘Bulletin’ in 1890. At this time he wrote the powerful works for which he is best remembered – ‘Convict Days’, four volumes of stories about Australia’s convict period. The major theme of these stories is the sordid nature of the convict system. Astley became heavily involved with the Federation campaign, firstly as the Secretary of the Bathurst Federal League and then as the organizing Secretary of the 1896 Bathurst Convention. This convention is considered by historians to have given the Federation campaign a new and vigorous vitality. In 1898 Astley wrote most of the official articles publicizing the ‘Yes’ vote in the Federation referendum. Astley lived and worked in Warrnambool in 1883/4 (for about twelve months) as a journalist for the Warrnambool ‘Standard’. This book is of great interest as it documents the life of Price Warung (William Astley) who features in the history of Warrnambool journalism as an Australian writer of note who also wrote for the Warrnambool Standard. Examples of Astley’s journalism can be found in the Warrnambool Standards of 1883/4. He wrote lengthy articles in a free-flowing and attractive but verbose style. His two articles on the well-known horse stud and hop farm called ‘Bryan O’Lynn’ appeared in the Standard in October 1884. This is a hard cover book of 197 pages. It has a dark green cover with an image of a world globe and a Pegasus on the front. The printed title, the author’s name and the images are in gold print. The cover has a plastic overlay and a library label had been mostly removed from the bottom section of the spine. The book has notes on the author, a photograph of Price Warung, a Preface, Acknowledgements, Chronology, eight chapters on Price Warung, Notes and References, a Bibliography and an Index. Inside front page: ‘Jane Carpenter’ Stamp: ‘Withdrawn from Library’ price warung (william astley), warrnambool and federation, federation movement in australia, history of warrnambool, warrnambool standard -

Book, Captain James Cook, 1987
This book, written by John Hooker, contains the story of Captain Cook based on the screenplay by Peter Yeldham for the A.B.C. television production of the life of Captain James Cook. The voyages of Captain Cook are of prime importance in Australia’s history as his discoveries and positive reports of the east coast of Australia led eventually to Britain’s decision to establish a penal colony in New South Wales. This book is of significance because it was written by John Hooker, important in Warrnambool’s late 20th century history as a regular feature writer and columnist for the Warrnambool Standard newspaper. His articles, which raised moral, social and political issues from a local point of view, were widely read and admired by the residents of Warrnambool and district. Born in New Zealand, John Hooker came to Australia in 1963 and resided for a time at Killarney near Port Fairy. He was a publisher and later a full-time writer, publishing both newspaper articles and novels. This is a soft cover book of 258 pages. The cover is mainly red and blue and features on the front cover a colour photograph of Keith Michell, the actor portraying Captain Cook in the A.B.C. film production. The back cover has a summary of the life of Captain Cook and a small colour photograph of a film scene of Captain Cook with some Pacific Islanders. The book has a Prologue, three chapters and an Epiloguejohn hooker, captain james cook, history of australia, warrnambool history -

Prisoptometer, Geneva Optical Company, Dr Culbertson's Prisoptometer, 1886 (estimated); late 19th century
How widely the prisoptometer was used is unclear but the Standard Optical Company later patented a new model, The Standard Prisoptometer, on June 21, 1904. Edward Jackson's crossed cylinder technique of determining astigmatism was first detailed in the Transactions of the American Ophthalmological Society (1887)4:595-598. The convenience of Jackson's crossed cylinder lenses over the prisoptometer in weight, cost, portability and reliability meant that they were soon almost universally adopted. This is a rare item as few are known world wide. This instrument is an optometer, that is, a device to measure the refractive error of an eye. It is made of cast iron, steel, brass and glass. It contains a prism which could be rotated, and was used to view a disc or an object circle. The prism caused monocular doubling of the object circle and the separation of the two images varied as the prism rotated, depending on the astigmatism present. The axis of the astigmatism was indicated by the prisoptometer and trial lenses were used to determine the the magnitude of the spherical and cylindrical refractive errorImprinted:"DR CULBERTSON'S PRISOPTOMETER/ GENEVA OPTICAL COMPANY MAKERS, GENEVA, N.Y./ PATENTED SEPT, 21, 1886". Equipment - Weight
The disc-shaped design of these 1LB and 2 LB metal weights enables them to be stacked one on top of the other. The weights are used with a balance scale to accurately weigh the mass of items such as grain, sugar, meat or potatoes. They could have been used in retail or wholesale businesses like a general store or a grain merchant’s premises. The user would place either one or both of these weights on one side of a balance scale. Goods would then be placed onto the other side of the scale until the beam between both sides of the scale was level, showing that the weight of the goods was as heavy as the weight or weights on the other side. These two weights are marked in Imperial units. An Imperial Standard 1LB is equal to 453.592grams. The British Weights and Measures Act of 1824 defined official standards for weights and measurements. This ensured that uniform measurements would be used for trade throughout the Empire. Towns and districts would have an official set of Imperial Standard Weights and Measures. Inspectors periodically used this official set to check the accuracy of traders’ own weights and measures. There would be penalties such as fines or imprisonment for people who broke these laws. The State of Victoria had its own Weight and Measures Act in 1862 and a decade later the inspectors in local councils used their local set of weights and measures to test the local businesses measuring equipment. In the nineteenth century the Victorian Customs Department carried out this role but this was handed over to the Melbourne Observatory at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Measures Branch then followed on with this task from the 1940s until 1995. Australia began converting to the metric system in the 1960s, beginning with its money. The conversion from imperial to metric units of measurement in Australia took place from 1970 and was completed in 1988 when metric units became the only legal unit of measurement. Equipment - Weight
The disc-shaped design of this 2 LB metal weight enables it to be stacked on top of another similarly shaped weight. The weight is used with a balance scale to accurately weigh the mass of items such as grain, sugar, meat or potatoes. It could have been used in retail or wholesale businesses like a general store or a grain merchant’s premises. The user would place the weight on one side of a balance scale. Goods would then be placed onto the other side of the scale until the beam between both sides of the scale was level, showing that the weight of the goods was as heavy as the weight on the other side. This weight is marked in Imperial units. An Imperial Standard 1LB, or one pound, is equal to 453.592grams. Document - Certificate of Competency, Marine Department, Commonwealth Council for Trade, 1883-1894
Fifteen year old Albert Edward Gill was born in Poplar, Middlesex, in 1868. He volunteered in May 1883 as an Apprentice Ordinary Seaman with the Merchant Services under the London shipping company James P. Corry & Co., owner of the Star Line. The shipping company by this time had a fleet of both clipper and steam cargo ships that sailed as far away as Australia and New Zealand. Gill’s apprenticeship was a four year unpaid term, with only his food, drink, lodgings, washing and medical needs provided for him. The contract had many conditions but it was a wonderful opportunity for a young man. His father James Gill signed the papers as his guarantor. In December 1887 Gill completed his apprenticeship and qualified as an Able Seaman. He served for another seven years with James P. Corry & Co. and earned his Certificate of Competency as a Master in the Merchant Service in April 1894, having passed the Ordinary Examination. (The transcription of Gill's two certificates is provided further down this page.) JAMES P. CORRY & CO. - The Belfast Company was formed in 1826 by Robert Corry, and imported timber from Canada to Ireland. In 1859 the company expanded to import timber from Calcutta, and relocated its offices to London. In the 1880s the company had a fleet of 13 tall clipper ships and included ports in Australia and New Zealand in its destinations. It continued to expand trade even further and by 1908 the Star Line had seven cargo steamers trading with the East and Far East (the ships were named Star of Australia, Star of Japan, Star of England, Star of New Zealand, Star of Ireland, Star of Scotland and Star of Victoria). In 1912 the Star Line ships added an emigrant service to Australia.
