The Australian Natives' Association was a benefit association originally founded in 1871 for Australian-born white males. It was historically an influential organization, being a prominent supporter of the White Australia Policy and a campaigner for Federation. It amalgamated with Manchester Unity in 1990 to form the association, Australia Unity. The Warrnambool branch of the Australian Natives' Association, Branch Number 100, was founded in 1889 and was a prominent group in that town/city for many years.The original owner of this badge is unknown but it is retained as a memento of the A.N.A., an important group in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This blouse was made by Annie Beryl Mathieson from silk material which came originally from China via family relatives. Annie Beryl Mathieson, born in Western Australia in 1910, married John Harman in Nullawarre in 1939 and made the blouse which she wore under a navy costume for her 'going-away' outfit. They lived at Macarthur and Annie Beryl died in 1983. This blouse is of interest as an example of women's fashions in in the late 1930s and of handmade clothing in the same era.This is a cream silk blouse. Nothing is known about the ownership of this locket which has been in the collection for many years. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was a common practice to own a locket as a piece of jewellery. This washing machine is an early model hand machine which came from Allansford, near Warrnambool.This item is an interesting example of an early washing machine with its primitive and simple parts.This is a cylindrical galvanised metal tub mounted on a metal stand. It has a metal ring around the top of the tub and a wooden handle serving as the washing mechanism. These three books contain braille printing and may have come from The Victorian Association of Braille Writers and may have been used by Miss Skirrow in South Warrnambool in 1916. This latter information comes from the loose card in one of the books. Braille writing was invented by the French man Louis Braille in 1824 based on the French alphabet. This is a souvenir pennant of the H.M.A.S. Warrnambool, named after the City of Warrnambool in Victoria. This ship was the second of that name. The first H. M.A.S. Warrnambool, launched in 1941, was one of 60 Bathurst-class corvettes commissioned by the Australian Government. It was involved in mine clearance work in the Great Barrier Reef after World War Two. The mines had been laid by the Australian Government during the war to protect Australian waters. In 1947 the first H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was sunk by one of these mines and lies on the ocean floor off Cockburn Reef in northern Queensland. The second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was commissioned in 1981 and was a Fremantle-class patrol boat assisting in capturing illegal fishing boats and participating in military exercises in Australian waters. In 2005 the second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was decommissioned after 24 years’ service. This pennant is important as a souvenir of the H.M.A.S Warrnambool, a ship that had obvious links with the City of Warrnambool. In 2005 the Mayor of Warrnambool, Glenys Phillpot, attended the decommissioning of this ship at Darwin and brought back several souvenirs of the ship. This is a triangular-shaped pennant made of dark blue felt material. It has stitching at the straight edge with two tabs for attaching the pennant to a pole or post. The pennant has a badge of yellow, black and white tonings printed or stamped on to the felt. The badge includes a white unicorn, a stylized ship and crown, a boomerang and two other implements and the motto, ‘Protect and Avenge’. The words, ‘H.M.A.S. The container is hinged and the top has five circular buttons that are on springs and can be pushed inwards. These five movable buttons produce indentations of different sizes and they can be used to hold coins to the value of threepence, sixpence, one shilling, two shillings and two shillings and sixpence. As the photograph on the front page of this pamphlet suggests, the ‘Home & Family Week’ activities may have been inspired by the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth in England. The program for the week included exhibitions, speakers, musical entertainments, a church service, children’s films, public meetings, discussion groups and a youth tea. A committee was formed in Warrnambool to organize the week’s events and the Chairman was Mr Lindsay Anderson.This program is of interest because it gives us details of an event that was staged in Warrnambool in 1953 – Home & Family Week. Many of the speakers and chairpersons for the activities of Home & Family Week were well-known people in the Warrnambool community at the time – Dr H. Holmes, Edith Jacobs, Rupert Philpott, Mrs J.O. Tait, Dr Brauer, Mr E. Willison, Arnold Westgarth etc. This is a pamphlet - one sheet folded in two to make six pages. It has the program for Home & Family Week held in Warrnambool in 1953. This is a souvenir mug produced for visitors to the ‘Mary Rose’ Exhibition in Warrnambool (December 1994 to February 1995). The ship ‘Mary Rose’, built in Portsmouth, England in 1509-10, was historically of major significance. She was the spearhead of a master plan to give England superiority on the high seas. Using new technology of the time, heavy artillery was mounted on the lower decks of this ship and this overloaded the ship. In 1545 she sank in Portsmouth Harbour with the loss of 700 lives as she was about to set sail to defend the English against the French invaders. In 1982 the hull of this ship was raised to the surface and the contents recovered. Over 200 items from the wreck were brought to Warrnambool and displayed in 1994-5 at the Warrnambool Art Gallery. This mug is of interest as it is a memento of the ‘Mary Rose’ Exhibition held in Warrnambool in 1994-5. This exhibition was an important event in the 1990s in Warrnambool and attracted many visitors. These slates and nails were recovered from the roof of Christ Church, Warrnambool when the slates were replaced recently. The foundations of the Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool were laid in 1855 in Henna Street. The south nave was completed in 1857, a porch was added in 1859 and in 1862 the north nave was completed. The chancel was erected in 1877 and the tower completed in 1882. The church is a stone building. The Hammond Centre for community functions was added in the early 21st century. These items are of interest as they demonstrate the type of building materials used in the 19th century. This is a book containing early 20th century photographs of the town of Terang in the Western District of Victoria. Most of the photographs were taken by Robert Frederick Scott (1877-1953). He was born in Koroit and came to Terang in his early years. He took up coach building and in 1906 he moved to Cobden where he continued coach building with W.J. Silvester. He was regarded at the time as a clever mechanical engineer and was a pioneer in the motor garage business. In the 1930s he was a representative for the Melbourne firm of A.H. McDonald & Co. in the machinery business. He installed milking machines in the Western District and Gippsland. His hobby was photography and he took many photographs in the Western District and supplied photographs to the Victorian Railways for inclusion in the train carriages. This book is of considerable interest as a record of the town of Terang in the early 20th century. The photographs are of high quality and the book will be useful to researchers.This is a soft cover book of 52 pages. This book gives information on the history of Terang Primary School which opened as a National School in 1858. It then became Terang Common School No. 617. It was destroyed by fire in 1871 and rebuilt, becoming, after 1872, Terang State School. Peter Carmichael was the Head Teacher from 1859 to 1884. The book was written to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the school’s foundation. The school is now part of a dual campus P-12 school known as Terang CollegeThis book is of some interest as a record of the Terang Primary School up to 1983. This plate was painted by J.J. Forrester in 1922. John James Forrester, the son of John Lamb Forrester and Maria Hexter, was an architect in Warrnambool in the early 20th century. He had an office in Kepler Street (1910) and in Koroit Street (1916). He lived in the house in Liebig Street that was formerly the first Savings Bank and was erected in 1860 (7A Liebig Street today). Forrester was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church and was the co-architect for the re-building of the interior of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool after it was destroyed by fire in 1920. John Forrester was also a noted artist of his time and several of his works of art have survived. A landscape by him is in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This plate is one of two painted by Forrester that survive today.This plate, although damaged, is of interest because it was painted by John James Forrester, a Warrnambool artist from the early 20th century. This is a china plate showing a seascape painted by John James Forrester in 1922. It depicts a coastal scene of rocks, birds and sailing boats. Graeme Davison, Emeritus Professor of History at Monash University in Melbourne, has also written five other books dealing with aspects of Australian history. St. John’s Bowls Club was formed in 1926 as a sporting adjunct to the activities of St. Johns Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool. In 1956 the club moved to Princess Street in the church grounds. It closed in 2012, the closure caused by dwindling membership and the site being designated by the Presbyterian Church for other purposes. This hat band is of interest as a memento of St. John’s Bowls Club in Warrnambool. This club no longer exists.This is a navy cloth hat band – a strip of material stitched at one end to shorten it and shaped with a ‘V’ at the other end . In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to the contract to perform the horse work for the tramway for a period of one year. The horse work involved the transporting of goods by horse drawn tram trucks, all repairs to the tracks , shunting and delivery duties. This is a telephone directory of the telephone numbers and addresses of residents and businesses in Melbourne in 1933. There had been several early attempts in the second half of the 19th century to link places and homes in Victoria by locally-made telephone systems with a commercial telephone system in the same year successfully linking a business in Melbourne to a branch office in the same city. The first telephone exchange in Australia was established in Melbourne in 1880. This 1933 telephone directory shows the growing number of private residents and businesses to have the telephone installed but the installations were still confined mostly to the more affluent private residents and to businesses. This book is of considerable interest as a reference guide as it provides the names and addresses of those who had a telephone installed in Melbourne in 1933. This will be of great use to researchers, especially those compiling their family tree. This is a soft cover book of 364 pages.
