The aerial photograph shows the market garden situated on the river bend and flat of the Deep Creek at Bulla. In the 19th Century a hotel occupied the site. After World War II the property was owned by the Hughes family, who grew flowers. Rick Morris established Markwood Estate in 1971 with a philosophy for making wine of very high quality using chemical-free, traditional methods, both in the vineyard and also in the winery. The vineyard is deliberately not irrigated in order to induce more intense flavour into the fruit. This black and white image appears on page 9 "Painters and Pioneers: One hundred years of Eltham and its Shire" by Alan Marshall (1971). (It is incorrectly acknowledged as S.T. Gill in the acknowledgements). It relates to Chapter 1 "The Beginning" and the description of explorer's Joseph Gellibrand journey through the area (and beyond) of the area now known as Eltham and wider Shire of Nillumbik. Gellibrand was accompanied by male aborigines. William Macleod (1850-1929) was a contributor to the "Picturesque Atlas of Australia" 1886. Described in "The Daily Telegraph" 21 June 1924 :"Macleod is a preserver of the scenic records of his own time, inasmuch as he has furnished posterity with many view of towns, rivers, and other localities, as they appeared in the years 1886-8. During the period 1969-1971 photos were being collected for a proposed publication on the history of the Shire of Eltham as part of its centenary celebrations in 1971 (managed by the Shire of Eltham Historical Society and Alan Marshall). The publication was Pioneers & Painters (1971), edited by Alan Marshall. The document titled "Shows area sold to Woolworths" consisted of a panorama of three B&W photo prints creating a panorama of the frontage along Main Road (SEPP_0744) and a single B&W photo print of the Shire of Eltham offices and Hall on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road (SEPP_0737) along with typed and hand written notes by Ian McDonald. The panorama (SEPP_0744) was captioned in typewritten text "Old Shire Office and Hall, etc - Frontage of 285 feet along Main Road" and in pencil the date "4-1-68" The single image of the shire offices (SEPP_0737) was captioned in typewritten text "Main Road and Arthur Street Corner" In addition, the following handwritten notes in pencil: " I took these photos from the new fire station - the building in the middle is the old fire station - Moved to Research for the Scouts 1970" and signed "IMcD"This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). This album contains a collection of family photos, greeting cards and hand drawn floral emblems. Among the photographs are two which have details on them: a young girl named Margaret Clarke aged 8 1870 and another of Charles Alexander Clarke. The photographers are from many places including Britain, Melbourne, Portland and a number by Daniel Clarke of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke was one of Warrnambool’s more important photographers, operating a business for thirty years in the town. He also worked as an artist and taught art in local schools. He painted a number of versions of Tower Hill. He died in 1918 at the age of 91.This album shows a collection of photographs and cards which were important to families in the later part of the 19th century. It has artistic and historical significance, with the photographs in particular depicting many different styles of clothing and household details of the time. Sparks Trophy from the HBYC and was won by D Allee During the 1890/91 season. D. Allee was one of the first members of the Brighton Sailing Club and became Commodore in 1887 and again in 1906. In 1960/61 the trophy was re-introduced at RBYC as a Division 3 PHD HCP race which is sailed during a Club Marine race on the same day as the Edwards Cup for Division 1 and the Secours trophy for Division 2.
