Photos taken at the 13th Annual Widows' Art and Craft Exhibition held at Legacy House in 1994. The note with the photos says: "The quality and ingenuity of the arts and crafts entered were outstanding and quite a daunting task for the judge, Mrs Janice Bridges". Photos show President George Woodward speaking, other names are not known. This was an Annual Art and Craft Exhibition that was run by the widows club. The items could be sold at trading tables and at the table outside Legacy House during Badge Week in September to raise funds. There were craft afternoons throughout the year for widows to learn new skills and gather together at Legacy House. These regular meetings, fetes and workshops provided important opportunities for widows to meet, socialise and be activeA record of the type of activities the Legacy widows participated in. Craft days throughout the year provided times to gather together and socialise. The Art and Craft Exhibition gave them a chance to show off their talent. A photo of the official party at the planting of the Olive Tree of Peace in the Western Lawn of the Shrine of Remembrance in 1973. Although the back of the photo says "Planting of Lone Pine tree" it is believed that it is wrong and this photo belongs with the Olive Tree of Peace photos (see 00478 and 00479). 1973 was the Golden Jubilee year of Legacy. The names on the front of the photo mentions Sir Edmund Herring who was Lieutenant General of Victoria for 27 years, which is deputy to the Governor, so he was probably acting on behalf of the Governor at the ceremony. Herring was a renowned Australian senior officer in World War II. In September 1942 he became commander of New Guinea Force. He also served in World War I, earning the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross. A function in Legacy House attended by widows and legatees. It is assumed to be 2001 as it was with a bunch of other photos with the label, "Badge Launch 2001". Legatee George Woodward (President in 1994) holds a wooden spoon and appears to be entertaining the ladies, Legatee Ray Ward (President 1996) is in 00597.4, and Legatee Tony Parkes (President 2002) is making a speech in 00597.5. The lady in blue is Dulcie Cedaro and Glad Fenton is standing next to her, both are Legacy widows and active in the Widows' club committees.A record of a function for widows. An event at the Shrine of Remembrance Visitor Centre, the guests include some youths and Ron Barassi and President George MacKenzie. It could be the launch of Badge week - the poster says: Buy a Badge, with an image of the Widow and Children statue. See also 00686. Ron Barassi, an ex-AFL footballer, participated in several Legacy events over the years. Ron was a a junior legatee after his father Ron Snr was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27. An event at the Shrine of Remembrance Visitor Centre, the guests include some youths and Ron Barassi. Afterwards they posed for a photo in the Garden Courtyard. The president is George McKenzie. Ron Barassi participated in several Legacy events over the years. Ron was a a junior legatee after his father Ron Snr was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27. From the film numbers see also 00686 and 00687. The Visitor Centre was completed in 2003 and provides unimpeded access for the elderly and disabled to the Sanctuary, the Crypt and the Galleries of Remembrance as well as open space for exhibitions and events. The courtyard has an olive tree as a centrepiece. This is the olive tree of peace that was planted by Legacy in 1973 to mark their golden jubilee. Two photos about the donation of a special bottle of King's Ale to Legacy that was to be auctioned to raise money for Legacy Week in 1960. A newspaper clipping about the event explains the story. In 1902 a special brew of ale was made by King Edward VII. In 1960 a bottle of the ale turned up in Melbourne and was donated to Legacy by Mr A W Taylor of 'Old Tin Shed' a motor accessories firm. Cockerell's Forge built c.1858 by John Cockerell stood on the corner of Bridge Inn and Plenty Roads, Mernda, and operated for over 100 years. John Cockerell's brother-in-law Moses Thomas (1825-1878) is identified in this photograph which would date it prior to 1878. The Hon. John Sherwin (1811-1868) born Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, brother of George and Thomas Sherwin, early settlers in the Whittlesea District. The Whittlesea area was first settled in 1837 by George Sherwin, who established his station where the Whittlesea township now stands. John took up a 7000 acre leasehold to the east in the area now known as the Sherwin Ranges. John later purchased 6000 acres in Beveridge where he built Braemore Homestead. He travelled to Europe and married Mary Hernan. On his return to Beveridge he entered politics and was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1864. The bluestone Craigie Lee homestead constructed c. 1860 was purchased by Thomas Hurrey in 1886 from James Bett. Bett had earlier purchased it from George Sherwin and Aeneas McPherson in 1868. The Hurrey Brothers, Craigie Lee Farm Dairy, was established 1893 and continued until 1952. The property remained in the hands of the Hurrey family until 1989. Craigie Lee is significant for its association with Sherwin, and the Hurrey family both prominent early pioneers of the Whittlesea District. The George Sherwin Commemorative Bandstand. George Sherwin was the first pioneer of the Whittlesea District. Arriving in 1837, he built his hut and stockyards near this location. The plaque was unveiled on 11 November 2001 by Mr. Graham R. Sherwin. The bandstand originated from a proposal drawn-up by Whittlesea Historical Society members Gwen Hawke and Maureen Doyle, and based on an idea put forward by Heather Tivendale.
