WADE, Ivan Mayor 1969-70, 1970-71 Ivan Wade grew up in Bendigo and Brunswick, one of eight children. After his marriage, he moved with his wife and young family to Kew in 1951. In 1959, he took a year’s sabbatical in 1959 to build a new family home for his wife and four children at 222 Cotham Road, Kew. He worked professionally in the Meat Industry, successfully building a small chain of retail butcher shops, and a meat exporting business. He worked for improvements in the Trade through involvement in the Meat and Allied Trades Federation, of which he was the first State, and then Federal President. He was to be awarded an OBE for his services to the Meat Industry in 1979. Having been a long-time member of Melbourne Lions Club, he helped start Chadstone Lions’ Club as an inaugural tenant of the Chadstone Shopping Centre in 1979. He was also a tireless worker for charity, making his home available for functions raising funds for local groups. His passion for the community led him to stand for Kew Council as a representative of College Ward. As a councillor, he was elected mayor for two terms. During his term of office, new Kew Municipal Offices were constructed in Cotham Road. An active worker for the Kew Elder Citizens Association, he was involved in the establishment of an Opportunity Shop in Walpole Street to raise funds for the development of a new Centre in High Street. The Opportunity Shop was used to train locally unemployed youth skills such as furniture repair. (GW)Silver presentation trowel associated with the opening of significant civic projects in the former City of Kew.Commemorative, inscribed silver-plated presentation trowel given by the City of Kew to the Mayor, Cr Ivan Wade, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the new Kew Civic Centre on the corner of Cotham Road and Charles Street, now part of Trinity Grammar School. The silver trowel was presented in a black leather case lined with blue velvet. The trowel was to be used a second time in 1982 when Cr Wade and his wife laid the foundation stone of Hamer Court. The trowel was later donated to Kew Historical Society Inc by Gwlad Wade, the wife of Cr Ivan Wade, on 20 August 2000. The inscription in the book indicates that it once belonged to Edwin J Dale, who may have received it May 13th 1901, the date on the inscription. The album was made in Germany and has English, German, French and Spanish language on the fly page. It has 2000 pockets for holding stamps and is illustrated. The printer, Spottiswoode and Co., was established in 1738 by William Strahan, with premises in New Street Square, London. The growing firm advertised as Printers, Lithographers, Stationers, Electrotypers, Publishers, and Booksellers and by 1914 there were 1,000 employees.The stamp album is of Victorian vintage and shows that at the end of the 19th century people collected stamps. It represents the hobbies and past times of the people of that era.Illustrated Postage Stamp Album. It is rectangular in shape and has a centre piece gouged out and a metal blade protected by a wooden piece inserted into the top hole and protruding at the base of the body to form a planing tool. The metal blade has a straight edge. This chisel is one of several tools that are believed to have belonged to the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. English-born Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849. They lived for some years in Port Fairy. In 1865 Henry formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie to establish the Warrnambool undertaking business of Beattie and Phillips. This business continued on after the deaths of the founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved in the management of the Mechanics Institute. This tool has a wooden handle indented in the middle to give a firmer grasp and a metal blade inserted at the end of the handle to form a chiselling straight edge. The metal blade is held at the handle end by a band of metal. The wood in the handle has been gouged out and broken at the top end on both sides. This tool is of interest as an example of a home-made vintage tool and as a memento of the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. This is a small mallet with a wooden handle and a cylindrical-shaped piece of wood inserted into the handle to form a mallet head. The head section is reinforced with a piece of curved thin metal. They lived for some time in Port Fairy and came to Warrnambool where Henry formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie to establish the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips. This business continued after the deaths of the two founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved with the management of the Mechanics Institute. This tool is of interest, firstly because it is a good example of a vintage tool and secondly because it is a memento of the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. This is a small hand drill with a metal piece containing a composite material handle at one end (for one hand) and a metal piece at the other end for the insertion of a drill. Attached to the main metal piece is a circular piece of metal with spokes and a wooden turning handle (for the other hand). English-born Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849 and lived for some time in Port Fairy. In 1865 he formed a partnership in Warrnambool with Christopher Beattie and established the undertaking business of Beattie and Phillips.
