Chatham School, located in Weybridge Street Surrey Hills, was opened on 1 August 1927 following pressure from local residents as nearby schools (Balwyn, Mont Albert & Surrey Hills) were all over-crowded. This followed a surge in development following WW1. Land in surrounding streets was sub-divided. This included part of John Butler Maling (Jnr)'s small farm bounded by Banool Road, Wharton Road, Weybridge Street and Whitehorse Road. Ringwood Technical School was the first co-educational technical school in Victoria. In 1963, 229 Form 1 students were enrolled, being the biggest student intake so far in the school’s 5 year history, bringing the school population close to 700 in Forms 1 to 4. Extensions to the 3 year old building were under way to cope with the increasing student numbers. Experienced teachers came from all parts of the State to teach in this unique school, The school was known locally as Ringwood Tech School, Ringwood Tech, Ringy Tech, Ringers Tech, The Tech and RTS. It began in 1958 with Form 1 boys, then Form 1 girls in 1959 at a separate campus. Both groups were hosted at district schools until 1960, when the new school was completed at Heathmont. It was the first co-ed technical school in Victoria. The school underwent several name and role changes in later years, and finally closed in 2003.This is the parent record for the large archives collection of Ringwood Technical School (later Eastern Secondary College), consisting of class and group photos, trip and other photos, and various documents and magazines from the school's beginning in 1958 to its closure in 1993. Individual items fall in the VC Reference Number range 21001 - 22899 and where possible are grouped by year. The precis No 3 covers the Observation procedure to be used for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Order Triangulation using the Royal Australian Survey Corps standard Cooke, Troughton and Simms Tavistock or Wild T2. The geodetic model Tavistock with a 5.25" horizontal circle should be used for 1st Order Triangulation and maybe used for 2nd Order Triangulation if specially directed. The standard Tavistock with 3.5" horizontal circle or the Wild T2 should be used for 2nd and 3rd Order observations. The Precis discusses the types of errors, the source of errors and the best ways of managing them. John Thomas Huyton Clelland was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 11 June 1936. He arrived in Australia with his family as a 10 year old. He maticulated from Ballarat College in 1953, enrolling at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1954. At the Ballarat School of Mines Clelland excelled in his studies, obtaining over 75% credit passes. Clelland was also a great extra-curricular contributer at the Ballarat School of Mines. He was President of the Students' representative Council, Captain of the Football Team and a member of the cricket team. In 1956 Clelland was awarded the Honour Blazer for sport and general qualities in leadership. In 1957 he won the Ballarat School of Mines Mica Smith Traveling Scholarship. Clelland worked for 6 months in Kalgoorli and 6 months in Mount Isa and Broken Hill. As part of his scholarship he travelled to Canada where he worked with Falconbridge Nickel processing nickel deposits. After 16 months in the Richvale Laboratory (Toronto) he was transferred to a pilot plant in Dominican Republic. The process was patented in the 1970s. He became President and General Manager of Falconbridge Dominicana. While President he established a foundation to aid in the culture, education and living standards for the Dominican People. John Clelland died peacefully at his home on 15 January 2012 at Savannah Georgia, USA . Upon his death John Clelland's wife, Loretta, informed his 'alma mater' that he was 'so proud of the opportunity which was afforded him at the School of Mines in Ballarat.' The University of Ballarat is proud to include John Clelland on our alumni roll.Four pages handwritten in blue ballpoint pen. The building is the former Greenvale State School No. 890. Although a school had been functioning at Greenvale since 1870. This is a photo of the school building that was renovated in 1926. At weekends the building was often used for family gatherings and social functions in the district. As the area became developed and changed from a country settlement to a suburb, the school was relocated to a new building closer to the new housing development. The existing building became a community centre. The Ballarat Teachers' College Class of 1949 60th Reunion started at the Dana Street Primary School, the home of the Ballarat Teachers' College in 1949. The reunion started with singing the College Anthem 'Extra Muros', and many other songs associated with the College. The attendees then travelled by bus around the Ballarat Schools they worked with as Student Teachers' in 1949. Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was born in 1915 in Ballarat, Victoria to Stella Rehfisch and Walter Gude, musician and violin teacher, and conductor of the St Patrick's Cathedral orchestra and choir in Ballarat. Her parents met when Stella was 27 and the 42-year old Walter was teaching her the violin. Nornie and her sister Gilda were both raised in Ballarat before moving to Melbourne on the eve of World War II. She was accepted into the Ballarat Technical Art School at 15 because of her advanced skill in painting, and trained there from 1931-1936. She won the esteemed MacRobertson Scholarship in art worth £100 a year. She later went on to the National Gallery School from 1936-1939, studying with Sidney Nolan and Charles Bush, and became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. Gude won many awards for her painting both while at school and throughout her career. Opening in 1891 the Moonta School of Mines was intended for students who wanted to increase their knowledge of those arts and sciences which were especially important to miners and others similarly engaged. The School was situated close to the Moonta Mines, at that time the most important copper mines in Australia, and the smelters at Wallaroo. The the mines students were able to acquire practical knowledge of the work of a miner. The close by smelting works at Wallaroo were seen to be of great service to those wanting to become acquainted with chemistry and metallurgy. Subjects taught at the Moonta School of Mines included Chemistry, Metallurgy, Steam and the Steam Engine, Magnetism and Electricity, Mathematics, Machine Design, Mine Surveying and Leveling, Drawing, Plumbing and Sheet Metal Work. Coimadai is a rural community located 10km north of Bacchus Marsh. The Coimadai School was opened in 1862. It was at first entirely funded by the local residents in the area. In these early years it was known as the Pyrete School after the nearby creek of that name. The building shown in this 1883 image was constructed in 1872 and replaced an earlier wooden structure. Over time the Coimadai School became a government funded and administered school. A famous pupil to attend the school was John Cain Senior, Premier of Victoria in the 1940s and 1950s, who attended the school for one year in 1893. Springvale State School, No. 1544, opened in May 1875 and closed in 1906. Land for the school was donated by the O'Meara family.
