... “It’s the new-look tram”...The Age ...Newspaper clipping titled: The Age, 24/3/73 “It’s the new-look tram” Photo and text of Melbourne’s newest tram Minister for Transport, Mr Wilcox, look at model of new tram at Preston workshops. Mr S Bramich, electrical engineer, worked on project. Photo shows model of tram with full-size prototype behind the two men. Melbourne's new orange-coloured super trams have been designed for an era of one-man operators and women drivers. Cheaper to run. Passengers should find them more comfortable and faster. Will go into service early next month (April?). MMTB Chairman, RF Kirby said board would like to recruit women drivers for trams, especially new super trams. "...very keen to have women tram drivers. But union has objected." Kirby said board had no immediate plans for introduction of one-man operators but trams could be easily adapted. One-man operations could be used in off-peak periods. State Government recently approved calling of tenders for 100 new trams to replace Melbourne's oldest trams. 300 trams are 50 years old. New tram is 53 feet long and 8 feet 9 inches wide. Passengers will enter through front door and purchase ticket from seated conductor. Rear exit door. Improvements to new trams are:, forward boarding means all passengers have to pass conductor, reducing missed-fare problem costing about $1M per year, no running board and tram cannot move until all doors are closed. Reduce compensation payments to passengers for injuries, last year around $30K, faster acceleration and top speed of 45 mph, ventilating fans and heating during the winter, stop lights and flashing turn indicatorstrams, tramways, prototype tramcar, modelling, z class, preston workshops, minister for transport, mmtb chairman -

... Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report. 1913 ...Sheetmetal was introduced to the Ballarat School of Mines in this year, as was the Ballarat Junior Technical School - a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Assay and Chemical Laboratories remodelled. It was decided that the new Ballarat Technical Art School would be built on the site of the former Circuit Courthouse, which for many years served as a Museum for the School. It was noted that demolishing this building would remove one of the very oldest landmarks of Ballarat. Swinger operated between 1972 and 1975 at Ballarat Civic Hall. The Ballarat Observatory was transferred to the Ballarat East Council. Thomas S. Hart resigned to fulfil the position of Head Master of the School of Forestry at Creswick. B. ... Certificate, Festival Parade Award, Rotary Club of Eltham...Rotary Club of Eltham ...Eltham Community Festival awards. Awarded to the Shire of Eltham Historical Society for the most effort by locals. Newsletter No. 27, November 1982 ELTHAM COMMUNITY FESTIVAL Although our parade entry did not win a prize this year, it was considered highly successful from a participation point of view. Despite some uncertainty as to just who was corning, members and friends kept appearing at the assembly area . As in the past years our friends from the Victorian Folk Music·Club brought their instruments along and really added to the occasion. This year we concentrated on a rural theme with a tractor/trailer combination. Thanks to Peter Bassett-Smith for the tractor, Joh Ebeli for the decorations and friendly trailer owner Dennis McKay. Unfortunately the closing stages of the parade were marred by heavy rain. We just finished as the rain started but members scattered very quickly. This has prompted the suggestion for future parades that we have a tent or other suitable venue for members to gather after the event. This is worth following up. The cold driving rain provided a special problem for Peter in driving his tractor home to Kangaroo Ground. Have you ever had to choose between standing up to warm your hands on the exhaust and having your tractor seat flooded? Plan, Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works : Borough of Kew : Detail Plan No.1568, 1905
... Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works : Borough of Kew...Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works ...The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). Plan No.1568 covers the area bounded by Cotham Road, John Street, Sackville Street, and Edward Street. Alfred Street and Rowland Street are in shown in the middle of the plan. The two most notable buildings shown are ‘St Helliers’, the home of the Dumaresq family, and St Hilary’s Church and school. While the colours used to indicate St Hilary’s are grey as in other civic/public buildings, the first St Hilary’s Anglican Church was at this stage constructed in weatherboard. At the left of the plan, facing Sackville Street is a house named ‘Glencara’. The 1988 ‘Kew Conservation Study’ recorded that “The first documentary evidence of this house comes from Rate Books which record that in 1893 a Mrs Treadway was the owner of this building with an N.A.V. of £81? At that date the occupier of the house was Charles B. Kelly, a clerk, while by 1910 Kelly had become the owner of the property described in that year ‘as a six-roomed stone, brick and wood house with stables and outbuildings’”. Contrary to this description, the 1905 plan indicates that the house was entirely constructed of masonry.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1568 -
