Photograph of Clover Dam foundations, Clover Dam Foundations, 1949
Stripping of the foundations commenced in 1948 and the first concrete in the dam was poured in May, 1949. With the suspension for the winter months of work on the High Plains, it was possible to increase the number of men, and work then proceeded at a steady pace for the remainder of the year. Some interruption was caused by a flood in September, which over topped the rockfill coffer dam. By the end of 1950 17,000 yards of material had been excavated from the foundations and 4,000 cubic yard of concrete placed. Work at Clover Dam was completed in 1953, but two bays were left open for flood emergency. The pondage was filled on the 16th August, 1954. A pictorial record of the placing of concrete foundations of Clover Dam and also shows the methods of construction used at this site in 1949.Black and white photograph taken during the construction of Clover Dam. Parks Victoria - Gabo Island Lightstation
Lifebouy
Possibly used as a tool to rescue people who may have been in distress in the ocean off Gabo Island. It was removed from Cape Otway and returned to Gabo Island museum. Information printed in black on the orange, plastic, ring shaped buoy confirms the item’s association with Gabo Island Lightstation and also indicates that it was made in Australia by the Rotadyne company for the Department of Transport, which oversaw lightstations between 1950 and 1982, and 1983 and 1987. The buoy was repatriated to Gabo Island from Cape Otway Lightstation in July 2015. It is unknown how it came to be there or how long it had been there. It has second level contributory significance for its historic value and provenance.Circular orange plastic ring with printed in black around ring. Ring has raised inscription. Remnants of white reflective tape in four places. White rope tied to ring through four holes in a distinctive taught crossed pattern at the back of the bouy.On front printed in black, "GABO ISLAND LIGHTSTATION", and embossed "MADE IN AUSTRALIA', 'DEPT. Work on paper - Artwork, Bruno Leti, 'These Trees' by Bruno Leti, 2015
Bruno LETI (1941- ) Born Rome, Italy Arrived Australia 1950 Bruno Leti was nine years old when he came from post World War Two Italy. Known as a painter, printmaker, photographer and publisher of artists’ books, he studied at RMIT, studying Printnaking under Tate Adams, and Melbourne Teachers' College. He has taught art in Italy, Canada, USA, and Melbourne, Australia. Bruno Leti lives and works in Melbourne. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.This etching by Bruno Leti was exhibited as part of "Parallel Prints", a limited edition print project which presents the same exhibition simultaneously in New Zealand, at Art at Wharepuke and at a gallery in another part of the world. Eleven Australian artists were invited to join New Zealand-based printmaker Mark Graver to contribute to a portfolio that will be shown simultaneously at Art at Wharepuke, New Zealand and the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Victoria. Using the uniqueness of the reproducible print allows for the same works to be viewed at the same time on opposite sides of the world. This highlights the democratic nature of printmaking and questions the aura of the unique. Which venue is showing the 'real' work? Which the reproduction? The Australian artists showing alongside Mark Graver are James Pasakos, Bruno Leti, Martin King, David Frazer, John Neeson, Antonietta Covino-Beehre, Deborah Klein, Deborah Williams, Melissa Smith, Jodi Heffernan and Susanna Castleden. The original concept, Parallel Prints NZ-UK in 2013, included invited artists from the UK and New Zealand. It featured the work of twelve diverse artists presented in a portfolio set. Each artist contributed one work on 300 x 300 mm paper in an edition of thirty-six. Part of the concept behind the project was to donate twelve of the portfolio sets to international collections. Institutions that have accepted a portfolio include the Victoria & Albert Museum and The Ashmolean Museum in the UK, the Jinling Museum of Art in Nanjing, China, and the Whangarei Art Museum, in New Zealand. In 2015 a portfolio set was donated to the Federation University Art Collection.trees, printmaking, etching, bruno leti, artist, artwork, parallel prints, landscape -

This is the 1951 prospectus of the new company known as Leahy’s Electrical Industries Limited and formed from the previous business of Jim Leahy, Electrical Engineer. The business was then and remains today at 82 Fairy Street, Warrnambool . The business of Jim Leahy had been operated in conjunction with Leahy’s Hire Cars and commenced in 1946. This was initially a good business with 25 employees but the building stock and plant were destroyed by fire in 1950 with the business continuing on a limited scale until the new company in 1951 was formed. Jim Leahy purchased the freehold at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets and the business prospered from there but today it is based back in Fairy StreetThis prospectus is of some significance as it signals the start of the important business in Warrnambool today of Leahy’s Electrical. The prospectus shows that the original directors were Leahy, Dwyer, Walter, Croft, White and Affleck and they were prominent Warrnambool and district people at that time. This prospectus also has a good summary of the history of the Leahy business up to 1951 and the financial statements etc are of considerable importance to researchers and other readers. Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Photographs – Group of 3 old sepia photographs, 2 of women in period costume and 1 of group of nurses from Sunbury sanatorium
Europeans arrived in the Kiewa Valley in the 1830s and 40s. Following the drought of 1838-44 seeking out the rich pastures in the fertile Kiewa Valley. . The next major increase in population was as a result of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. The beginning of construction of the Kiewa Hydro-electric scheme in the late 1940s introduced changes and led to the enlargement and improvement of local roads and the townships of Mount Beauty and Bogong Village were constructed by the SECV from the 1930’s to the 1950’s to house workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. At its peak the Kiewa Scheme employed around 4000 people from all walks of life and as many cultures. The influx of European migrants to work on the Hydro Scheme along with their rich cultural backgrounds, all played a major part in establishing the history of the area and in shaping the future character of the Mount Beauty, the Kiewa Valley and Falls Creek areas. Photographs may depict descendants, family or friends of early settlers or workers in the Kiewa Valley region.1. Aspirin Bottle, Howard and Sons, Early 1930s (contents)
This bottle contained aspirin made by the firm of Howard and Sons of England. This firm had its origins in the late 18th century and manufactured pharmaceutical products, especially quinine and aspirin. The latter was used as a painkiller for headaches and minor health problems. The distributor of this bottle of aspirin was Len Suggett, a chemist in Warrnambool. James Barnes established a chemists business in Warrnambool in the mid 1920s and Len Suggett was the manager. After the death of Barnes in 1939 Len Suggett bought the business. The business was at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets (102 Liebig Street) until about 1950 when it was moved to another site across the road in Liebig Street. This bottle has local provenance as it came from the pharmacy of Len Suggett who was a well-known businessman in Warrnambool for many years and therefore the item has some significance as a memento of that business. This is a small brown glass bottle. It is empty but originally contained aspirin. The main body of the bottle has a label (white with dark blue edging) covering all sides of the bottle. The label is somewhat stained and frayed. The bottle has no stopper or lid. Howard’s English Aspirin L.G. Suggett Chemist Cr Liebig and Koroit Streets Warrnambool Phone 42 -

Newspaper Article - Tawonga School Centenary 1980 x2, Alpine Courier incorporating The Hydro Courier, 1980
This newspaper article was produced at a time when newspapers were the main source of local information. The period before the explosion of mobile communication technology and the cost effectiveness of communication by "texting" and internet "social connections, eg. facebook and other social media networkings" The newspapers were the main links between and within large regions. The Hydro Courier was first printed in 1950 as a YMCA community service publication by Mr. Albert Clarke YMCA Officer and Mr. Alex McCullough a State Electricity Commission employee. This paper was one very important publication that provided relevant community information to all and was the major contributer to the "Valley" cohesive fibre and unity. This article not only records the celebration (centenary) of the Tawonga School but also presents the history of the school and important events such as various relocations of classrooms and how the region was settled and developed from the 1870's onward. The yawonga school opened in 1880 on 8 acres of land. It consisted of one large wooden building (22 ft x 11 ft). It had two windows, one brick chimney, bare wooden floor and a shingle roof. This article also presents the time when Mount Beauty area was likened to an island and occasionally school children could not attend school because of a flooded Kiewa river. The article also covers the changes brought about by the increased employment opportunities from SEC Kiewa Works(1935), the Sawmill(1946), the Gold mine(1949) and the Tobacco Industry (largest growing area in Australia). This item is a one page (original) article of the centenary celebrations for Tawonga Primary School came from the Alpine Observer and incorporated the Hydro Courier. It covers the arrangements for the celebration of the 100 years of the school's existence. The printed layout is typical of the typeset in use in 1980's. There are seven distinctive type collumns separated by a printed line. Three photographs are published with one photograph of a demountable classromm ,circa 1980, and the other two of student class photos of 1899 and 1914. Teacher and student names are listed below each photograph. On the back of this page are "specials" for "Sam's Cut Price Stores", specifically the Myrtleford store. Of interest is the advertisement of "Cartons of Cigarettes at cut prices". The page was produced as part of a "run" with "telltale" holes at each corner for stabilising the page in the printing process."Centenary Celebrations For Tawonga Primary School" below this in an enclosed heading "ALPINE OBSERVER" underneath in smaller print "WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED" below this in larger print "THE HYDRO COURIER" and below this from left to right, "No. 719 (Vol. 3) THURSDAY, 23rd OCTOBER, 1980" next "in smaller print Recommended Price Single Copy, 20c "(cents)rural school development, tawonga school centenary, kiewa valley development 1880 to 1980 -

Insulator Disk High Voltage, 1964
This insulator disk for the high voltage carrying electrical cables was manufactured in 1964 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to connect high voltage cables to their "towers" going from various Hydro Generators to and from power "stations". During this time period, high quality "cable" insulators were manufactured in Japan. In an earlier time they would have been sourced from Europe or England. After the 1950's the sourcing of electrical hardware was being influenced by the lower costs obtainable from Japan. Later on other Asian sources also became available. The need for a mountainous and a large area of operational requirements, such as the SEC Vic Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme, to distribute the electricity produced in the Victorian Alps to the major users required power transmission lines to "carry" high above the sometimes inaccessible land mass electricity generated at the power stations to the various sub stations along the valleys and ranges to flatter populated regions. The significance of this insulation "high voltage" disk to the Kiewa Valley region relates to the impact of modern technology (at that time) upon a mainly rural environment. These power lines are a stark visual "show" of the impact that the "Scheme" has on the mostly rural landscape of the Kiewa Valley and what a boost of "modern" equipment into the area has taken place. The "Hydro Scheme" had facilitated the transition of a semi rural area to an advanced rural region within a shorter time frame, than would have taken under "normal" evolutionary time. The speed of information of all "new technology" had a relatively slow assimilation rate before the SEC Kiewa Hydro Scheme came to those living in the then quieter rural communities. This high voltage (330 KV) insulation disk is made from non conductive porcelain stoneware. It is highly polished brown in colour and has a clip fastening for the high voltage cable to be attached to. This disk was hit by lightning and the burn marks are quite noticeable. The top metal connector has a "mushroom" extension jutting below the semi cone like insulation disk. Also four circular ridges or grooves (old 78 rpm disc recording style).Cable bell on top of insulation disk "4K " next to it the international symbol for electricity (triangle containing one horizontal line under one V line and one vertical flame like line.) On the opposite side "2" and to the right "64"sec vic kiewa hydro scheme, alternate energy supplies, alpine (above ground) high voltage electricity cables, volt cable, 330000 volt cable -
