This image was taken for the purposes of illustrating Jack Harvey's book 'Eureka rediscovered'. According to the State Library of Victoria catalogue the work is an over-painted photographic print, photographed by an unknown photographer from the painted canvas by Izett Watson and Thaddeus Welch, which was exhibited as a painted cyclorama in the 'Battle of Waterloo' Cyclorama building, Fitzroy, ca. 1891. This is based on the evidence that the pulleys and brick wall are discernible at the top edge of the image which B. Ireland has not over-painted. This artist may by Beryl Ireland, who was a miniaturist and studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in the 1870s. Beryl Ireland was the niece of Richard Davies Ireland (1816-1877), the lawyer for the Eureka defendants in 1855. Information provided by Dr. Mimi Colligan, 2002. Surgical tape or medical tape is a type of pressure-sensitive adhesive tape used in medicine and first aid to hold a bandage or other dressing onto a wound. These tapes usually have a hypoallergenic adhesive which is designed to hold firmly onto skin, dressing materials, and underlying layers of tape, but to remove easily without damaging the skin. Surgical tape is often white because it contains zinc oxide, which is added to help prevent infections. In 1845, Dr. Horace Day made the first crude surgical tape. It was created by combining India rubber, pine gum, turpentine, litharge (a yellow lead oxide), and turpentine extract of cayenne pepper and then applying that mixture to strips of fabric. It was the first “rubber-based” adhesive tape called Leukoplast for the German company Beiersdorf AG. Larger scale manufacturing of similar medical tapes began in 1874 by Robert Wood Johnson and George Seaburg in East Orange, NJ. Dr. Curt Schimmelbusch (1860-1895), a German physician, designed his original mask around 1889 while an assistant surgeon. Surgical assistants were often assigned the task of delivering the anesthetic. During anesthesia it was not uncommon for ether and chloroform to get onto the patient’s skin, causing irritation. Chloroform can even cause burn-like reactions. Schimmelbusch designed the rim of his mask so that both sides curve away from the patient’s face to form a kind of trough. He intended the trough-like rim to collect excess anesthetic that would otherwise have trickled onto the patient’s face. To anesthetize a patient, gauze was stretched over the metal bars and fastened in place by the hinge. The mask was placed over the patient’s nose and mouth, and the anesthetic was applied in drops or lightly poured onto the gauze so that the patient breathed in evaporated anesthetic as well as air. This type of mask is sometimes still used today for ether anesthesia in developing countries when other means are not available. An oval shaped mobile wire frame is attached to the lower part of the mask by a hinge at the back, approximately two inches from the lip of the metal handle. A "U" shaped bit of metal is attached to the front of the mask which acts as a clip to fasten the wire frame to the lower section of the mask.anaesthesia -

"Potential blockage in the Fallopian tubes was assessed using this apparatus. It was developed by American gynaecologist Isidor Clinton Rubin (1883-1958). It blows carbon dioxide, via a cannula, into the uterus. The ease with which gas escaped through the Fallopian tubes was reflected by pressure changes on an instrument called a manometer. Blockage of the tubes is often due to previous infection or surgery. It is a common cause of infertility. Rubin’s test formed a standard part of infertility investigations for many years. It was gradually replaced by an X-ray technique involving radio-opaque ‘dye’ injected into the uterus." Source: Science Museum Group. Loris BUTTON (27/02/1951- ) Born Melbourne Dr Loris Button grew up in Melbourne, completing undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at the Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Tasmania. Her PhD thesis employed self portraiture as a means for reflecting on the self, time and ageing in contemporary culture. From 1981 – 1986 Loris lived and studied in Hobart before returning to Melbourne. She lectured at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy from 1987. Since 1990 she has lived and worked in Ballarat and the nearby town of Creswick. Loris retired from an academic career at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat (now Federation University) at the end of 2010. Loris has continued a post-retirement association with the Arts Academy through her role as an Honorary Research Fellow. Working with prints, paintings and drawings on handmade paper, her work is regularly shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on 22 April 1988. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos include Legatees lining up to greet the official party, which included President Alf Argent and the Governor of Victoria, Dr J Davis McCaughey, AC (see 01784). Also the Governor inspecting a group of cadets. Many Legatees attend and one photo shows Legatee Tom Robinson with the school children. The event included a fly past of 4 aircraft and speeches by the president, the Governor and two school children (see 01785). A bugler in red uniform performed (see 01787). There was a boys choir and girls choir either side of the Shrine steps. Other school children sat on the steps with wreaths to be laid in the inner sanctuary (see 01788). Two Junior Legatees laid wreaths at the Cenotaph on behalf of Junior Legatees (see 01789). The school ceremony was broadcast on ABC TV and Radio for many years. Wodonga & District Historical Society IncLetter - Electricity comes to Wodonga - 1912 letter to Mrs Beardmore
Mrs Jessie Beardmore, wife of the Shire President, Mr Henry Beardmore, was invited to switch on the electrical current at the power house in Wodonga on 15th January 1912. This was not the official opening of the newly installed system which took place a few weeks later. Disagreement existed amongst Shire Councillors about the official opening, several of them including Mr Beardmore believing the opening should only take place when the scheme was completed. However Dr Schlink, Mr D. M. Stavely, Cr Twomey and Mr C. Holloway, Engineer for the Electric Lighting Company, arranged a small ceremony to turn lights on for the first section of the scheme. This included street lighting along Sydney Street between South Street and the Shire Hall as well as a few business houses and private establishments, with the balcony of the Terminus Hotel illuminated by over 100 lights. Other areas and buildings were connected over the following weeks. Mr Beardmore was not present at the beginning of proceedings but joined the crowd in the street. During a small number of speeches, credit for his work to instigate and further the introduction of electricity to Wodonga was given to Councillor Twomey, referred to as “the father of the scheme”. This item is significant because it records the first connection of electricity to Wodonga in 1912.A hand written letter addressed to Mrs Beardmore of Wodonga. Pickwick Clubs were established around the world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, inspired by the first novel of Charles Dickens. A Kew branch was formed in 1897 and lasted until c.1912. Its membership was drawn from a number of notable Kew families. The club published two booklets, the first in 1904 and the second in 1912. In addition to holding meetings, club members performed in productions of Shakespearian plays in the Recreation Hall in Wellington Street Kew. Members of the club adopted pseudonyms based on characters in Dickens' novels.Literary publication of of artistic (literary) significance recording the social and cultural activities of a group of residents of Kew and its environs that operated from 1897 to c.1912. Despite the steep terrain and engineering difficulties, the Yarra Track soon became a busy route used by pack horses, horse-drawn drays, and wagons. 'Mungo Moon' by Don Barrett is the first sculpture erected on the Churchill Art and Culture Pathway. It was officially unveiled by Professor David Battersby on 15 April 2015 From Churchill & District News 16 October 2014 The Churchill Art and Culture Walking Pathway will have its official public opening on Saturday October 18, with a walk finishing at Federation University Australia’s Switchback Gallery at the Federation University Gippsland Campus. ... An important link on the newly developed pathway was recently completed with a path south of the FedUni Student West Residences. The path now allows walkers to turn off the Eel Hole Creek path before reaching Glendonald Estate and to follow a picturesque, tree lined walkway to join up with the footpath on the Eastern side of Northways Road. From there the footpath joins into Federation University’s network of walking paths that proceeds past the Switchback Art Gallery, down through the pine plantation and along Lake Kretlow and the Churchill Golf Course. Project Manager Mike Answerth, said the opening of the West Residences section of the path means there is now only one short link to complete. “We’re now very close to realising the project’s objective to join up all these walking paths to provide a continuous pathway that encompasses town, campus and parkland. The next stage of the project will be the completion of Latrobe City’s East West Link and the enhancement of the walking path with artistic and cultural features.” said Mr. Answerth. Head of Federation University Australia Gippsland Campus, Dr Harry Ballis, said the project had been made possible through the contributions of the five former Gippsland Education Precinct (GEP) partners. “The Art and Culture Pathway represents another important step in joining the Churchill township and the university campus as a physical and social entity,” Dr Ballis said. “This was an initiative of the GEP and it is pleasing to see it coming to fruition.” The path now reaches as far as the golf driving range but plans are already under way to connect with the Mathison Park board walk and pathway, which surrounds Lake Hyland in Churchill. When the loop is completed, residents and visitors will have an approximately 5km circular walking path which links up the Churchill town centre, Federation University Australia and Mathison Park. There are already art features along this route, including primary schools’ Bug Blitz totems near the Kurnai College school crossing, native vegetation and history panels near the Hare Homestead in Mathison Park, and outdoor sculptures in the pine trees near the Federation University Switchback Gallery. contemporaryA large sculpture in five pieces set in an external location. Dr Gary Presland advised the following in October 2020: "In 1959 my parents bought a house in Church Street, Panton Hill. For about three and a half years previously, they had farmed a property 15 km south of Echuca, before moving, briefly to Melbourne. After moving to Panton Hill, I was enrolled at Eltham HS, in Form 2 (Year 8). I completed that year, and in 1960 was in Form 3A (at which time the photograph was taken). To reach the school, I caught a bus each day, from Panton Hill. Early in 1960, my parents decided to separate. My mother left with the youngest two of my three siblings, leaving me and a younger brother with our father in Panton Hill. My brother was in Year 7 at the High School. After a few months, my father and I had a falling out and my brother and I left home to join our mother in South Melbourne. For the remainder of the 1960 school year we travelled each day by train from Melbourne to Eltham. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. This letter to OHM Staff outlines the delay in the re-accreditation of the Grad Dip in Occupational Hazard Management course due to the need to appoint a specialist to the staff in this area. On 29 February 1892 'The Argus' reported on the first Annual Meeting of the Clunes School of Mines. "The annual meeting of the council of the Clunes School of Mines was held last evening at the town-hall. In place of members of the council retiring by effluxion of time the following were elected: — Rev. Elder Gray, Messrs. John Beveridge, R. Nichol, J. Bryant, W. T. Pitcher, J. H. Daley, and T. Gilbert. The first annual report, showing remarkable progress, was received and adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: — Rev. E. Grey, president; Rev. Father John Barrett and Dr. Gordon, vice- presidents; Mr. Joseph Bryant, hon. director; Mr. W. Y. Witherden, hon. treasurer, Mr. H. E. Sando retained the office of secretary, and the officers for the time being were appointed trustees." Great satisfaction was expressed with the success of the school, and the progress and extent of the classes. It was referred to a sub committee to make arrangements for allowing the free inclusion, in certain classes, of a limited number of boys and girls of 14 and upward, who on examination qualified themselves for the privilege. Prior to the 1900s, complicated births, particularly where there was a disproportion between the size of the woman’s pelvis and the foetus’ head, often meant the death of the baby and the mother. Instruments for removing a dead or ailing foetus from within the mother were used to attempt to save the mother’s life. The cranioclast, first invented by Dr. James Simpson in the mid-19th century and later redesigned by others, was used for fetal destruction and removal. Fundamentally a strong pair of forceps, the cranioclast was used to crush the skull, decreasing its diameter. In some cases, this would allow normal uterine contractions to expel the foetus; in others, the physicians would use an obstetrical hook to pull the body out of the mother. Doctors disagreed as to the pelvic diameter that would necessitate this drastic intervention, but generally found that 3 to 3.5 inches was the smallest size through which a living infant could pass. Equally of debate was the pelvic size through which the dead fetus could be extracted. When vaginal extraction was deemed unadvisable, Caesarian section would be performed. As caesarean section became safer and more common with the advent of anaesthetics and antiseptic techniques, the use of cranioclasts and obstetrical hooks diminished. (Museum of Health Care, Kingston) Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999. The bag and contents are a unique time capsule of the type of instruments and pharmaceuticals used in the inter-war period.Hinged metal tool with bakelite handles at one end and serrated teeth at other end. The instrument is in two sections. The right or upper blade has a black bakelite handle. There are two screws on the inside of the handle, 5.5cm apart. In the centre of the blade is a screw notch in the shape of a small horseshoe. On the inner side of the blade is a depression extending most of the length. The left, or lower, blade also has a black bakelite handle. There are two screws on the inside of the handle approximately 6cm apart. Mobile metal clasps in the shape of an 'S' , with three serrations, is attached to the distal end of the handle, which enables the blades to be opened or closed. destructive instruments -

Born Highbury College London 1834, died Melbourne June 19, 1910. Ordained in Pitt Street Sydney Congregational Church 21/3/1860. Ministry: Bush Mission, Lower Darling River 1860–61; Maryborough 1861–64; Dawson St Ballarat 1864–72; Williamstown/Secretary CUV 1872–84; Secretary CUV 1884–1908. Chairman CUV 1871–72 & 1908–09. Son of Rev. Dr Robert Halley, Principal of Highbury College. Arrived Sydney c. 1853. Had a holiday home at Queescliff/Point Lonsdale and tried to establish a Congregational Church there. Obituary read: "For 37 years in the office of Union Secretary he had proved himself a faithful preacher of the Gospel, a leader of the general interest of the churches of peculiar force, knowledge and devotion, and an earnest and high principled citizen of the State, devoting hmself to the social amelioration of the people and the extension of the Kingdom of God. Our late Secretary was a man of vigorous intellectual power. His early life had given him a bent in the direction of the study of natural history.
