Tenders were being called for a new "Benevolent Asylum" in 1855, the foundation stone having been laid and by 1856 the first part of the Hospital was completed. This photo taken in 1860 shows the very first building made from local bluestone. Mein's history of Ballarat College, published 1964, records the school's first enrolments this way. "The Ballarat College will be opened on Wednesday morning, 6th July, 1864, at 9 o'clock, in the Rev. Wm. Henderson's Church. Intending students will assemble at that hour" Advertisement in the Ballarat Star. 'Two seven year old boys 'assembled'. They were cousins, and their names were: Samuel Baird and James Brown. Functional object - Weight, Thomas & James Middleton, 1840-1852
Thomas and James Middleton owned the Britannia Bedstead Works and were based at the Victoria Iron Foundry in Smethwick’s Rolfe Street Birmingham England. The Britannia Bedstead Works was not a particularly large employer by local standards in 1851 it employed 80 men but it was profitable enough to enable James Middleton and his wife Elizabeth to live in a house in New Street, North Harborne, and to employ a servant. The foundry had been in production from before 1830 or possibly earlier and had become specialist manufacturers in the Birmingham area by the 1840s making many other cast iron items at the foundry, weights being one. An item made in England around 1850-1860 by a renowned company making items various cast iron items at its foundry in Smethwick, Birmingham. From the collection of the Rev James Watkin. From the collection of the Rev James Watkin. The Rev James Watkin, 1805-1886, was a Pioneer Wesleyan missionary. He was born in Manchester, UK, in 1805. In 1830 was accepted as a candidate for the Wesleyan Ministry and married Hannah Entwistle. They sailed with a missionary party to Tonga. The work of the mission was jeopardised by prolonged and involved struggles between Christian and non-Christian Tongan chiefs. He left with his family for Sydney in September 1837. He was offered a free passage for a missionary appointed to Waikouaiti, New Zealand and arrived there in May 1840. He established the first mission station in the South Island of New Zealand. Watkin established schools at Waikouaiti and Matanaka, and stationed partly trained Maori teachers at Stewart Island and at Moeraki. He had a natural flair for languages, preached in Maori four months after his arrival, and compiled an elementary reading book to be printed in Ngai Tahu. Watkin was relieved by Charles Creed and inWatkin finished his posiion in Waikouaiti in June 1844 when he sailed for Wellington, leaving 227 church members in Otago. In 1855 Watkin settled in New South Wales, Australia, and was president of the National Methodist Conference at Adelaide in 1862. He retired in 1869 and died on 14 May 1886, at Ashfield, New South Wales. Details of PTE Lukey's service can be found in the attached service record.Circular plaque with an image of Britannia standing with a lion and holding a trident and an olive wreath. Below the name tablet, to the right of the lion, is an oak spray with acorns. Two dolphins swim around Britannia, symbolizing Britain's sea power, and at the bottom a second lion is tearing apart the German eagle. There is a rectangular tablet reading LEONARD JAMES LUKEY cast in raised letters. Number 17 stamped behind back leg of lion. The legend reads (in capitals) "He died for freedom and honour". Designer’s, Edward Carter Preston) initials in front of lion’s front foot. -

This compass was confiscated from a Japanese soldier, when the Japanese surrendered to the British in Hong Kong, September 1945. It was acquired by Squadron Leader Victor James RAF, stationed in Hong Kong and New Territories Refer Cat No 5084P.Small circular compass of 25mm diameter. It has a black dial. A simple double ended arrow indicates bearing, arrow also has glow in the dark material on end. It has a small black leather strap and buckle.
