Martell Esq Director The Ballarat School of Mines Ballarat Sir The reply to request contained in your letter dated 11 June for transfer to the President Council of the Ballrat School of Mines of Debenture Stock referred to therein, I am instructed to inform you that the Council of the Ballarat Fine Art Public Gallery Associaiton finds, after exhaustive inquiry, that although it has been the practice, for convenience sake, to classify the Association assets under seperate headings, the Debenture Stock in question has always been justlu regarded as all assets of the Association with which it did not parch when consenting , in late 1893, to accept the Deparmental Regulations for Technical Art Schools. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was appointed in 1934 as the Musical Director of the London County Council (the GLC or Greater London Council), where he organized many amazing concerts in most of the 150 parks, in and around the London district. He was also responsible for some of London’s major concerts at Kenwood, the Crystal Palace and Holland Park. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and Conducting and was a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Frank was awarded an M.B.E. in 1967. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Printed 20 page booklet with black type and with some coloured and some black and white photographs. The cover photograph shows Queen Elizabeth II leaving Buckingham Palace on her horse at the head of the Royal Procession. On page 18 is the Programme of Music showing a piece written by Frank Wright, "Whitehall". This book is part of a collection of books, photos and memorabilia donated from the Chatham-Holmes family collection. This little prayer book was owned by Edith Holmes and was presented to her as an enrolled member of the Jesuit Seminary Association.This small blue, leather bound book has the title and a cross printed in gold on the front cover and the title on the spine. There is a picture of Jesus on the title page and the printing in the book is black and some headings are printed in red. It is 125 pages but page 33/34 is missing (The attached red marker ribbon is at this spot). A small card has been taped into the front of the book showing that Mrs Edith Holmes had been enrolled as a member of the Jesuit Seminary Association on 4 January 1967. This book could be described as the summing up of a theory of physical appearances, devised by a painter and demonstrated by paint. The foundation of this theory was laid down first in Paris by Max Meldrum early 1900s. A review calls the book "the most outstanding book on the craft of painting yet published in any language. Max Meldrum was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 03 December 1875. His family arrived in Australia and Max Meldrum attended the National Gallery School, winning the Victorian Travelling Scholarship in 1899. It was deaccessioned and transferred from the Ballarat School of Mines library so would have been used by students and staff of the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Red fabric hard covered book of 298pp, includes colour plates that have been pasted into the book. The book inlcudes 11 colour prints and 11 line and tone diagrams. These diagrams in clude Major and Minor Dark and liLight Disturbances; Speed Values and Form; Complex Light Disturbance; Experiments in Definition and Inclination; Apparatus for the Analysus of Visual Phenomena by Distance; Set of Patches; Modern and Obsolete Methods of Approach, Tonal Analysis on "St John's Parad"'; Chromatic Analysis of "St John's Parade".
