Book, G. P. Jones, Two Survived, 1941
On August 21, 1940, a Nazi raider torpedoed the British merchantman Anglo-Saxon and machine-gunned the survivors as they tried to escape in their lifeboats. One little boat escaped with seven men. Five of them perished, but Robert Tapscott and Wilbert Widdicombe endured for seventy full days and 2,300 miles to landfall on the other side of the Atlantic. This is the incredible account of their ordeal, one of the most thrilling stories of the sea ever written--and one that almost never came to light. "It has seldom happened," writes William McFee in the introduction, "that a narrative so circumstantial, so entirely stripped of all humbug and false sentiment, has come out of the depths of the sea, to inspire us with admiration for human valor." In the tradition of the Shackleton adventure and Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea, Two Survived is an unforgettable true story of survival against the very longest odds.non-fictionOn August 21, 1940, a Nazi raider torpedoed the British merchantman Anglo-Saxon and machine-gunned the survivors as they tried to escape in their lifeboats. Book, Nicholas Monsarrat, The Cruel Sea, 1953
Based on the author's own vivid experiences, The Cruel Sea is the nail-biting story of the crew of HMS Compass Rose, a corvette assigned to protect convoys in World War Two. Darting back and forth across the icy North Atlantic, Compass Rose played a deadly cat and mouse game with packs of German U-boats lying in wait beneath the ocean waves. Packed with tension and vivid descriptions of agonizing U-boat hunts, this tale of the most bitter and chilling campaign of the war tells of ordinary, heroic men who had to face a brutal menace which would strike without warning from the deep . .non-fictionBased on the author's own vivid experiences, The Cruel Sea is the nail-biting story of the crew of HMS Compass Rose, a corvette assigned to protect convoys in World War Two. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Photograph - Framed montage, Arthouse - Picture Framing & Gallery, Jervis Bay, 2013
THE SEAS IN WARTIME During WWII, as many as 27,000 men of the merchant and the King’s navy perished during active service. Dedicated to seafarers’ wellbeing, the Mission’s spiritual roots also make it a place for reflection on the loss of human life at sea. The Mission to Seafarers’ ministry offers its support in hundreds of seaports around the world, and has played an important role in supporting those who have lost friends and family at sea during wartime. Many of the stained glass windows in the chapel are dedicated to these people, and represent many close maritime community relationships. This window was installed in 1947 in recognition of the heroism and courage of those who have served in the Merchant Navy, and in particular to those who lost their lives aboard the armed merchant cruiser, ‘Jervis Bay’. This vessel was attacked by an enemy packet battleship whilst leading an escort from Nova Scotia to the UK in 1940.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. This frame is showcasing the memorial window to the Jervis Bay crew, a group photograph of the seamen from the SS Siltonhall and a group photograph of seamenFramed and mounted on black cardboard of black and white and colour reproductions from the MTSV collection for the exhibition Reflections of the Sea with brief label signageon label: ABOVE: VThe crew of the SS Siltonhall found refuge at the Mission in October, 1929, after their ship had caught fire and was abandoned in the Indian Ocean BELOW: A group of seafarers enjoying refreshments at the docks provided by volunteers from the Missionreflections of the sea, georgia melville, exhibition, 2013, world trade centre, wtc, hms jervis bay, ss siltonhall, siltonhall, ww2, creative victoria, prov, mission to seafarers, stained glass windows, justine m. philip, flinders street, catherine mclay, arthouse -

There's no doubt that Charles has had an interesting life. Born in England during the Depression, he experienced the Blitz on London, the Flying Bombs, and then the V2 rockets. From the age of sixteen Charles spent the next 24 years travelling the world aboard British, New Zealand, Fijian, and Australian ships, then settled ashore in Melbourne to start his own packaging business. He was later asked to work with the U.N. in Jordan, based in Amman for some time. On his return to Melbourne, he was appointed CEO for the continued restoration of the award winning sailing ship Polly Woodside, now the pride of our City. Whilst there, Charles initiated the construction of the ship "Enterprize" replica. Finally, he used his knowledge as a navigator to excite over 800,000 Victorian school children with the basics of Science and Astronomy. Charles decided to retire after teaching for 23 years, at the tender age of 82. It is quite a Lifetime. Artwork, other - Stained glass window, Brooks Robinson & Co, In memory of Karen Brady, 1947
"When Miss Karen Brady, typist of Westgarth St, Northcote, was knocked down by a motor-car at the corner of Heidelberg Road and Fenwick St, Clifton Hill, about midnight on Saturday (3 January 1942), her skull was fractured, and she died in St Vincent's Hospital 4 hours later. She was aged between 45 and 50. Miss Brady was for many years an enthusiastic worker for the Harbour Lights Guild for the Missions to Seamen. She worked there at the canteen many nights during the week, and assisted in many other ways at the mission. Mission officials said yesterday that Miss Brady had been a "splendid worker for the mission". (The Argus, Monday 5 January 1942, page 3) Karen Brady (1886-1942) daughter of Martin John Brady and Evelyn Whitmarsh This window in her memory, "a gift of friends among the seamen and workers of the Mission" was unveiled on the 14 December 1947 by Mrs Oliver, wife of Padre Oliver. William Digges Latouche Balden was an 18 year-old cadet on the Samarkund. He and three other crew members: William Archibald Jones, 35 (ship mate), Christopher Ewbank, 19 (third officer) and George P. Worsp, 45 (chief steward) died of oxygen starvation in the ballast tank of the ship on 20 August 1945 while in Geelong. Padre Oliver delivered a service in the St Peter chapel, on the 26th of August 1945, in the 4 men's memory. The window commissionned by his parents, was made by William Aikman (1868-1959), a reknown scottish stained-glass artist, and sent from England. Padre Oliver had met them during a voyage to England.
